CAR END ooivs'rnoofrron.
Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented nee. a, leila.
Application filed April 24, wat Serial No. $34,170.
To all whom t may concern.'
lle it known that l, AN'roN BECKER, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car End Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and 'use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in end constructions for railroad cars,-the object of the invention beingto so construct a corrugated vsteel car end as to enhance the strength and rigidity of the same throughout its entire width from corner post to corner post, and to reduce liability of deflection.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim. I
ln the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a face view of a car-end improvement, and Fig. Q is a partial side elevation of a car body, giving an edge view of the car end.
1 represents a-portion of the framework of a car body; 2 the corner posts, and 3 thek end sill.
The car end comprises sheet steel lates Li-5 secured to the framing. l pre er to employ at least two of such sheets, the lower edge of the upper sheet overlapping the upper edge of the lower sheet and riveted thereto as shown at 6. Each end sheet is provided at its right angles with vertical flanges? bent at right angles to the sheet and caused to lie against the outer faces of the corner posts, to which latter they are secured, the flanges of the upper sheet overlapping the flanges of the lower sheet. rlhe lower edge of the lower end sheet 5, is'prolvided with an outwardly projectingllange 8 which is securely riveted to the end silt.
'the end sheets 4 5 are corrugated traneversely forming a pluralityl of outwardly projecting V-shaped ribs 9 disposed transversely of' the sheets.` These ribs or corrugations are made of quite pronounced depth -and they extend fully to the side edges of the plates where said side edges unite with the integral side flanges 7. That is to say,- the said ribs or corrugations do not terminate near the extreme side edges of the plates, but extend completely to said side edges so that the ends ot' the ribs or corrugations will extend to and form parts of the side edges of the plates from which the flanges 7 project. ABy such construction, the strength of the car end will be greatly en hanced and deflection will be prevented because the ribs will strengthen the plates at their side edges from which the flanges 7 project. ribs or corrugations will also aid materially' in (imparting strength and rigidity to the car en Having fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is
A sheet metal car end comprising two sheets, each having flanges at its respective side edges to receive fastening means, one of said sheets and its flanges overlapping the other sheetand its flanges and secured together, each of said sheets having a plurality., of horizontally disposed parallel outwardlyprojecting V-shaped ribs or corra gations spaced apart, each rib or corrugation extending continuously across the sheet from one flanged edge to the other thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this Furthermore, the V-shape of the specification in thc'presence of two subscribvvVitnesses i M. T. Hnwrrr, H. B. Brno.
