Description
tniird gelang @anni @twine RHODE ISLAND.
Lette/fs Patent No. 91,511, dated .Tune 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may con-cern:
dence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Jewellers Presses; and do hereby declare thatV the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
The ,nature of our invention consists in an improved mode of forming the female screw in presses, by rst arranging a chamber in the casting, or frame around the screw, L1and pouring the same with melted antifriction metal or its equivalent; also in an improved arrangement of the slides, whereby they are more readily or securely adjusted.
To enable those sk illed in the art to make and luse our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 represents a fron-t view of the press;
Figure 2, a sectional view, showing the form of the slides; and
Figure 3, a sectional view, showing the male and female screw and the outer case.
A is the screw; B, the punch; C,'the die; D D, the slides; E, the plunger; 4,
?, the outer case, for holding the female screw;
A, in tig. 3, the anti-friction metal lining, forming the female screw; and
. g, the hole through which the metal is to be poured.
In making screw-presses heretofore, a considerable expense has been incurred in cutting the female screw,
but by this improvement the cost is very materially reduced.
We core out the outer case Fin a hexagonal shape, so that 'the lining will not be twisted or loosened by the lateral action of the screw, but any suitable projections or holes made to hold the metal will answer the purpose.
This improved anti-friction female screw is much better and more durable than the common thread of cast-iron.
The angular grooves of the slides D D hold the plunger E in such a manner as to keep it at a distance'from the fra-me J, whereas the frame J has al ways heretofore been formed by a portion of such slide, and which, owing to unequal wear, is not easily repaired. V
These improved slides are made adjustable by means -0f the screws H H and screws I I, the screws I I being piaced at right angles to the screws H H, and working in slots in the frame J of the press.
The screws H H tighten the slides against the plunger, and the screws I I operate to hold the slides against the -frame of the press J.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. Forming an anti-friction female screw, or nut of a screw-press, by pouring the melted alloy, or anti-friction metal around the screw, and into a chamber enclosing it, formed in the manner described.
2. Also, the combination of the plunger E, slides D D, and frame J, substantially as described.
' HENRY BLUNDELL. Witnesses: JOHN MGWILLIAMS.
