JOHN WITTNER, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
HAME
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 6, 190B. Serial No. 414,544.
Patented March 9, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
e it known that I, JOHN VVrrrNER., a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of Hoboken, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIames, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to harnesses and iarticularly to the means for receiving the raft or other strain which includes the haine and the trace attachment.
The obiect of my invention is to provide a haine which can be readily attached to or removed from the collar.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference fi ures denote corresponding parts and in w ich- Fi ure 1 is a front elevation of the hame whici is shown as attached to the collar, a part of the collar being shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 3--3 of Figs. 1 and 3; Fig? 3 is a cross section on line 4*4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the lower fastening means of the harne.
In the accompanying drawings 1 denotes the body part of the collar and 2 the head located at the front and forming` a groove 3. These parts are of ordinary form and construction, having any ordinary filling as hair or the like, and provided with a web 4 which is arranged between the bead i? and the body part l of the collar.
The haine consists of the ordinary hows 6, 6 which are of similar construction. For that reason it will suffice to describe one of said bows only, it being understood that the description equally applies to both hows.
The bow 6 may be inade of any desired material, as wood or the like. The lower part of the bow is recessed as at 7, and provided with a transversal bore S which adapted to bear a spiral spring Q. Mounted around that i'ecessei'l part ol the how and the outer end of the bore is a band 1() ol' suitable material, the outer end of the spring being adapted to rest against the inner surface of the outer portion of said band. Secured to the web 4 of the collar by a rivet or bolt 12 and a stiffening plate or washer 13 is a socket 11 which is arranged in extension of the lower portion of the bow and having an open end which registers with the recessed portion 7 of the bow. The opposite closed end 14 of the socket is tubular and contains a plunger 15 actuated by a spring 16. The side surface of the tubular portion 14 of the socket is provided with an opening 20. Pivoted at 21 in the recessed portion of the bow is a latch 17, 18 the arm 17 of which extends into the recessed portion of the bow and is adapted to rest upon the spring 9. The opposite arm 18 is provided with a nose 19 which is adapted to engage with the opening 2() of the tubular portion of the socket. When thus engaged the plunger 15 will, by its close contact with the nose 19 of the latch, reveiit any rattling by reason of slackness of) the parts.
The tubular portion of the socket is provided with a loop or eye 22 for the attac/ln ment of a strap 23 by means of which thc ends of the sockets of the two bows of the haine can be united, allowing of the bows being adjusted to accommodate them to different dimensions of the collar.
At about the central portion of the bow there is a hook 24 the shank 25 of which extends transversely through the bow and is suitably secured thereto. Gpposite the hook 24 an eye 26 is suitably secured to the web 4 of the collar, as by means of a rivet or bolt 27 extending through said web and a metal stiflening plate 28. The hook of the bow is adapted, when the latter is )laced in proper' position, to engage the sairl eye. In order to prevent the lhook from injuring the body of the collar, the eye is provided with a projecting flange 29. The upper ends of the bows are united as ordinarily by straps.
The inode of operation of the fastening means of the haine is as follows: To the loops 45 at the up er ends of the bows straps 46, 47 are attac ed which can be adjustably united so as to tighten or slarken the haine around the collar to vary the width of thc collar. After the adjustment of the bows in the groove 3 of the rollar the nose 19 of the latch 17, 18 is brought into engagement with the opening 2() of the socket. At the saine time the hook 24 at the central portion of the bow comes to register and to engage the eye 26. In order to unf asten the bows a pressure is exerted upon the nose 19 of the latch, discngaging it from the socket. The plunger 15 acting upon the latch will push the bow 6 upward loosening it from the collar, whereupon the saine can be removed.
The new haine has the advantage over the hitherto known constructions that it allows of a quick hitching and unhitchiiig, and furthermore that it is securely held in position upon the collar and will be thus prevented from slipping.
l do not limit myself to the plunger' thus engaged in the socket but contem late any construction which may facilitate t 1e movement of the latch.
W hat l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a collar ol' a haine, com )rising a pair of bows, a spring latch at the ower end of each bow, and means secured to the collar for the engagement oi said latches.
2. The combination with a collar of a haine, comprising a pair of bows, a spring latch at the lower end of each bow, and sockets secured to the collar for the engagement of said latches.
3. The combination with a collar of a haine, comprising a pair of bows, a spring latch at the lower end of each bow, means secured to the collar for the engagement of said latches and means for removably securing the upper ends of the bows to the collar.
4. The combination with a collar of a haine, comprising a air of bows, a spring latch at the lower em of each bow, a pair oi sockets secured to the collar for the engagement of said latches, hooks in the up er ends of said bows, and eyes projecting from the collar for the engagement of said hooks.
5. The combination with a collar, of a haine, comprising a pair of bows, spring latches at the lower ends of the bows,
sockets secured to the collar and having openings for the en fagement of said latches, and spring actuate plungers in said sockets acting against said latches.
6. The combination with a collar, ol' a haine, comprising a pair ol bows, hooks trans versely passed through said bows and se cured thereto, eyes secured to the collar and provided with protecting flanges, said eyes being adapted to engage the said hooks, and means for removably securing the lower ends of the bows to the collar.
7. The combination with a collar, of a haine, comprising a pair of bows, spring aetuated latches at the lower ends ol said bows, sockets secured to the collar in extension oi' the ends of the bows, and having openings for the engagement of said latches, and means for yieldingly connecting the adjacent ends of the opposite sockets.
8. The combination with a collar, of a hame, comprising a pair of bows, the lower ends of said bows being recessed, spring actuated latches pivoted in said recessed ends, a band embracing opposite edges of each bow and said recessed end, sockets secured to the collar in extension of said ends and having openings for the engagement of the latter.
Signed at Hoboken N. J. this 4th day of February, 1908.
