Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed August 12, 1905. Serial No. 273,941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL HEYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of envelop.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction which obviates the necessity of forming the envelop from a blank having a plurality of flaps which are folded over upon the body and pasted together, as in the ordinary construction, and which not only simplifies the operation of manufacture but to a material extent prevents waste of material and thereby decreases the cost of production.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the completed envelop, the section being taken on the plane indicated by the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a central transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a detail section through one of the end seams of the envelop on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4. is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is made.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a construction of envelop in which all the parts are integrally connected in a homogeneous structure, thus obviating the necessity of making bottom and corner flaps and pasting the same together. This envelop comprises a body A provided with a sealing flap A, and a back B joined at its ends to the ends of the body and which may be integral with the lower edge of the body or joined thereto through the same process of uniting the side edges thereof with the side edges of the back.
In carrying the invention into practice a suitable blank is first produced from a sheet of paper in a plastic condition, preferably whi e still damp as it comes from the rolls of a paper making machine. This blank is preferably of the form shown in Fig. 4;, in which j the back B is cut out as an integral part with the body and sealing flap and in forming the envelop the back B is folded over upon the body on the dotted line a and the end edges 1) and b of the back joined to the end edges a and a of the body by using a suitable seaming or compressing device, by which the edges are forced together under pressure, such pressure causing said edges, owing to the still plastic condition of the paper, to combine with their particles intermingling, thus producing practically homogeneous edge unions a, joining the parts together to form the completed envelop.
The operation may be 1performed by hand or machine, and as a resu t an envelop will be produced which is entirely free from pasted flaps and in which the body of the envelop as a whole is composed of a homogeneous wall of paper.
It will be seen that this construction and manner of making the envelop not only simplifies the operation of manufacture, but also obviates the loss of material and increased cost of production resulting from the usual method of forming the back of the envelop of bottom and side flaps and pasting the same together.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
As a new and improved article of manufacture a mailing envelop constructed from a blank of plastic paper stock, said blank comprising a body with a sealing flap and a rectangular back, said back being folded over on the body so that the opposite side edges of the body and back will be joined together by compression while the material of the blank is in a plastic state so as to permit said edges to intermingle and unite in a homogeneous manner without the aid of adhesive material.
