Description

initrd Otatrt 1l/latent @twine JAMES W. CAMPBELL AND WILLIAM J. MILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 91,414, dated .Tune 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN G-LUING-HOPPER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt mtl/y concern Be it known that we, JAMES W. CAMPBELL and WILLIAM J. MILLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Gluing Hopper; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which formpart of this specification.
This invention is designed for use in the gluing together of tongued and grooved joints.
The object of the invention is the more even and uniform distribution of the glue upon the surfaces of said joints and within the groove thereof, preparatory to the uniting or gluing-operation; and
The invention consists in a sliding hopper, having 7 arranged lengthwise of and `below its opening a tongue,
or strip, which enters within the groove during the sliding of the hopper over the grooved surface of the joint to be glued, thereby not only serving to guide the same in its sliding movement, but also to regulate the flow of glue into the groove.
Referring to the accompanying drawiugs- Figure l represents a plan View of a gluing-hopper, constructed according to our invention, and
Figures 2 and 3 represent transverse sections of the same, showing its applicability to surfaces of plain and irregular formations.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding' 'parts in both figures.
A is an open-bottomed trough, or oblong hopper, constructed of wood, or other suitable material, and the lower, or under side of which is made to conform to the surface upon which it is designed to be used, so that when placed upon said surface that portion thereof upon which it rests will serve as a bottom to the same.
Attached to the bottom, or under side of this hopper, and lengthwise thereof', is a combined guide-strip and regulator, a.
Said guide-strip, or regulator a is so constructed as to enter the groove of thel surface which forms the bottoni of the hopper, and to fit loosely therein, so as not only to serve as a guide to the hopper, in its sliding movement, but also, by not quite filling the groove, to permit the glue to run thereiuto, yet prevent a too great accumulation of the glue therein, and, by its longitudinal sliding through said groove, to spread the glue evenly and uniformly upon its bottom and sides.
In the operation of this invention, the hopper A is placed upon the surface which is designed to be coated with the glue, and a sucient quantity of glue to coat the same is poured therein in a liquid state, when, by a longitudinal sliding of the hopper, every part of said surface is made to form the bottom of the hopper, and it, together with 'the bottom and sides of its groove, are thereby evenly coated with the glue contained in the hopper.
What we claim as our inveutionaud desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is
The gluing-hopper A, having attached to its bottom the combined guide-strip and regulator a, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
