Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed November 28, 1905, Serial No. 289,52. Renewed December 26, 1908. Serial No. 469,378.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY S. I'Liwiis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collar buttons and has for its object to provide a compara` tively simple and inexpensive device or this character ca able of being readily placed in position on t e shirt-band and which may be worn without discomfort to the wearer.
A further object is to provide a collar button having a broad bearing surface for engagement with the shirt band thereby to relieve the pressure on the back of the neck and also to prevent. the button from twisting or turning when the collar is in position thereon.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency as Well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a shirt band and collar showing a collar button constructed in accordance with my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the button, a portion of the shirt band being broken away to show the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collar button detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device is principally designed for use as a rear collar button and by Way of illustration is shown in position on a shirt band of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the shirt band and 6 the j protecting flap provided with the usual butl ton hole '7 for the reception of the collar button.
he collar button consists of an elongated ilexible plate 8 having its central ortion bowed outwardly to form a ooncaved caring surface 9 conforming to and adapted to bear against the adjacent surface of the shirt-ban il 5 thereby to present a broad bearing surface for engagement with the shirt-band and effectually preventing the collar button from twisting or turning when the collar is fastened thereto. 'lhe opposite ends of the plate at the upper and lower longitudinal edges thereof are preferably curved or rounded, as indicated at 12 in order to prevent the same from cutting or otherwise injuring the shirt-band. Extending laterally from the convex surface 12 of the ,late is a shank 13 provided with a terminal head 14 adapted to pierce the button-hole 7 in the usual manner for engagement with the collar ll, said shank being extended through an opening in the plate and riveted to the conca-ved face thereof.
In using the device the plate is positioned between the shirt-band 5 and the protecting flap 6 with the head or button 14 projected through the button-hole 7 for engagement with the adjacent button-hole in the collar.
By forming the button in the nia-nner described a broad bearing surface is presented to the shirt-band at the rear of the neck thus effectually relieving the pressure on the neck of the wearer and also assisting in retaining the shirt-band 5 in proper position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and efficient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A collar button comprising an elongated substantially rectangular plate having its corners rounded and its central portion bowed outwardly to produce a convex bearing surface, there being a transverse opening formed in the center of the plate between the adjacent longitudinal edges thereof, and a solid cylindrical shank extending laterally from the convex face of the plate and having being flexible thereby to permit said plate to one end thereof provided With an enlarged conform to the shape of the neck of the head and its opposite end extended through wearer.
the opening and riveted to the concave face HENRY S. HAWKS. of the plate, said concave face being smooth l Witnesses:
and unobstructed throughout its entire HORACE H. MITCHELL, length, the plate on each side of the shank l WHITFIELD H. HOUGLAND.
