UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. ENGSTROM, OF S'l. CHARLES, ILLINOlS.
ALBUMMAND SEEE 'I S THERE FOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led October 26, 1908.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ENGsTnoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Albums and Sheets Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in albums and sheets therefor, and is fully described and eX- plained in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation ot' a book incorporating a series of leaves made according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the leaves; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 of Fig. 2.
Referrino to the drawings, A is a sheet of paper, cardioard, or other suitable material. To this sheet are secured corner-gripping sheets B, B1 and B2, the corner-gripping sheet B is rectangular in form and diagonally disposed on the sheet A in such position as to present four diagonal edges under which the corners of four cards or other objects to be mounted can be thrust in the manner indicated. The cornergripping sheets B1 are triangular in shape and half the size of the corner-gripping sheets B, and are disposed toward the centers of the edges of the sheet Aso that each presents two diagonally disposed edges to engage two corners of the cards or pictures to be mounted. The corner-gripping sheets B2 are also triangular in shape, each being of half the size of the corner-gripping sheets B1 and each is arran ed so as to present one diagonally disposed edge to receive one corner of a card.
In assembling sheets of any desired size, corner-gripping sheets similar to the corner-gripping sheets B will be selected for all interior corner-mountings, those similar to the corner-gripping sheets B2 will be selected for the eXtreme corners of the sheets, and the others, like the corner-gripping sheets B1 will be selected for the intermediate lateral corner-mountin 's. The corner-gripping sheets are secure( to the sheet A by means of paste applied in such spots or lmes as to leave the central portions of the diagonally disposed edges free to receive thereunder the corners to be fixed in position. After the corner-gripping sheets Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 459,619.
C is placed thereover, the said mask-sheet being of the same size as the sheet A and having a series of rectangular openings of such size and so positioned that each opening exposes at its corners the central portions of the four adjacent corner-gripping sheets. The mask-sheet is made of the same thickness of material as it is intended shall be mounted on the sheet or is made thicker than the cards to be mounted. As a result, when a card is inserted in position by thrusting its corners under the corner-gripping sheets it will lie flush with or beneath the level of the mask-sheet.
It will be evident that, if desired, two sides of the central sheets A can be utilized for picture-mounting by securing on each side the corner-gripping sheets and masksheets, and such is the preferred form of construction illustrated in Fig. 3 although it will be obvious that, should 1t be considered desirable, one side only of the sheet may be utilized for mounting purposes.
Sheets of the form herein illustrated and described are desirable because of their simplicity, cheapness and convenience in use whether used singly or bound in book form. When, however, they are bound in book form they are more especially desirable by reason of the fact that the pictures or cards lie Hush with or below the level of the masksheets so that when a book or album is filled with pictures or cards it is no thicker than it was before such filling took place. It is, therefore, possible to bind up a book in the manner shown in Fig. l by utilizing a series of my improved sheets without inserting between the sheets spacing devices at the hinge, such as is usually necessary in connection with scrap-books or other volumes intended to receive additional inserted matter upon the pages.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend, therefore, to limit myself to the speciic form herein shown and described.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. The combination with a main-sheet, of a niask-sheet supported thereon and providing openings vin which the cards to be mounted can lie, gripping-sheets interposed have been placed in position, a mask-sheet i between the main-sheet and the maslesheet and having free portions Within the openings of the mask-sheet beneath Which, por
Y tions or" a card or picture can be thrust.
2. A book comprising,'in combination, a series of pages each or which comprises a main-sheet, a mask-sheet provided With openings in Which a card can lie, and gripping-sheets having free portions lying Within the openings in the mask-sheet to receive portions of the card or picture.
3. rlhe combination With a main-sheet and a mask-sheet having a series of rectangular openings therein, ot' a series of diagonally disposed corner-gripping sheets having portions confned between the main and masksheets, and free intermediate portions crossing diagonally the corners of the openings in the mask-sheet to receive thereunder the corners of the articles to be mounted.
4L. A book comprising, in combination, a series of pages each of which consists of a main-sheet and a mask-sheet having rectangular openings, and a series of cornergripping sheets conned between the main and mask-sheets and having free diagonally disposed portions crossing the corner of the openings in the mash-sheets to receive the articles to be mounted.
5. The combination With a main-sheet and a mask-sheet having a plurality of rectangular openings, of a series of corner-gripping sheets conined between the main and mask-sheets, the corner-gripping sheets being of such form and so positioned that Where there are adjacent openings in the mask-sheet each corner-gripping sheet spans corners of such adjacent mask-openings.
6. A picture-mounting sheet having, in combination, a main-sheet, a mask-sheet having rectangular openings, an interior corner-gripping sheet diagonally disposed and overlapping the adjacent corners of the mask-openings, and corner-gripping sheets for the remaining corners ot the openings.
7. In combination in a picture-mounting sheet, a main-sheet, a mask-sheet having a series of rectangular openings, corner-gripping sheets for the medial, lateral corners, each triangular in form and overlapping the adjacent corners of the corresponding mask-openings, and corner-gripping sheets for the remaining mask-opening corners.
S. In combination, a main-sheet and a mask-sheet provided With a series of rectangular openings and a series of corner-gripping sheets, tlie interior cornergripping sheet being rectangular in form Vand diagonally disposed so as to span the corners or' four adjacent mask-openings, the medial, lateral corner-gripping sheets being triangular in form and disposed to span the adjacent corners of tivo mask-openings, .and the corner corner-gripping sheets being triangular in form ot' halt' the size of the lastnamed corner-gripping sheets to span one corner each of the mask-openings.
