GAITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed August 20, 1907. Serial No. 389,344.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HYMAN COHEN, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaiters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gaiters and the object thereof is to provide such an article of apparel which may be worn with either surface thereof upon the outside at will; a further object being to provide such an article which may be readily secured in position in either of its uses without duplication of the securing devices; a further object being to provide means whereby the upper part of the gaiter may be turned downwardly, in order to insert the bottoms of trousers, without the necessity of removing the same or of disconnecting the main securing means, and a still further object is to provide such an article which is adaptable to all conditions of weather or climatic changes, which is simple in construction and use and very inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the same reference characters are used to indicate like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gaiter constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a view thereof in an open or extended position; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of a securing device used in my invention; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of a slight modification of the construction shown in Fig. 4, also employed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, I have shown a gaiter comprising a body member a, of flexible material, and composed of a main side member a and two members a and a connected with the member a and adapted to be connected with each other, and the member a is also provided with an extension (1 which is adapted to overlap the rear of the gaiter when in position for use.
In Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the rear of the gaiter consists of the member a and a supplemental member a connected therewith and with the member a at a andthus forming an independent upwardly directed element which may be turned downwardly to the point of its connection with the member a and the member a without disconnecting the same therefrom, supposing the extension a to be disengaged, the object of this being to permit the insertion of the bottoms of trouser legs and, this being possible at the rear of the gaiter, it is also possible at the front thereof as will be seen.
The rearward edge of the member a is provided with a plurality of button holes I) adapted to engage buttons 0 of the member a and holes 6 to engage buttons 0 on the extension a the buttons 0 being each mounted upon a loop 0 of thread, twine, wire and the like, secured adjacent to slots 0 in the fabric of the gaiter, as shown in Fig. 5, and this construction permits of moving the buttons 0 to either surface of the fabric through the corresponding slot and the buttons 0 are similarly mounted adjacent to slots 0 but upon elastic bands 0 formed into loops similar to the loops 0*.
Secured at d, upon one surface of the fabric of the gaiter, are two straps d and d which are adapted to be passed to the other surface of said gaiter through slots d and the latter one of which carries a buckle d which is of old form and which permits connection therewith, in two ways, of the strap 01 In practice, I prefer to form the gaiters of waterproof material, either with one glazed and one cloth surface, or of two cloth surfaces which may be of different colors or designs, these materials being at present employed in various articles of apparel, and if the former is used, the glazed surface is placed outside, the buttons 0 and c and the straps d and 03 passed through the corresponding slots to the glazed surface of the gaiter, and said gaiter secured in position, during wet weather, and the other surface thereof outwardly when the weather conditions permit. In the latter form of fabric, either side may be at the exterior, either as a matter of individual taste or to conceal a soiled surface, the operation beingsimilar to that of the other fabric.
The object of the extension a is to permit, as previously stated, insertion of the bottoms of trouser legs, and the elastic bands 0 maintain a snug fit of the gaiter about the ankles of a wearer with the trouser legs either insideor outside, as will be seen, and, when the gaiter is reversed, the extension (1 is passed outwardly of the members a and a", this being possible because of the connections below the top' of the gaiter.
It will be understood that I do not bind ..myself to theexact buttons and holes there- 10' forshown, as various kinds of securing devices may be vemployed, nor to'the exact form ofthe gaiter body, as the same may be inade'of various shapes and of various heights according to the use thereof-and many other changes in and modifications of the form of construction shown and described .may be made without departing from the splrit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A; gaiter, comprising abody member,
securing means for the ends thereof, a strap at each side of the bottom thereof, devices for connecting said straps, means for-holding said securingdevices upon either sur- .;face of said'gaiter and said body member .being provided with slots adjacent said straps whereby they may be passed wand -member.
be operable oneither surface of said body 90 A gaiter, comprising a body portion,
one end of which is divided longitudinally formingtwotmembers, one of which is prober secured to said body member beneath said slit and to the shortened end and projecting above said slit, a flap encircling said last named member and securing devices therefor and for said flap-with said body member at its opposite end.
4. A gaiter, comprising a body member,
securing devices therefor, a flap connected therewith, devices for securing said flap to one end of said body member, a tongue on said body member, securing devices for the bottom of said body member'and means for holding said devices on either surface of said gaiter.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing asmy invent-ion I have 'signed my name in presence of the subscribing witne'ssesthis 19 dayofAugust 1907.
