Description

DNTTF STATES PATFAN T AMOS S. ORR AND LEONARD D. OBR, OF I-IILLVIEW, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOBS, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO ELISHA N. FORD AND ONE-HALF TO MARY ELIZA ORR, BOTH OF I-IILLVIEW, ILLINOIS.
SCYTI-E.
Application led March 3, 1908.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Anios S. ORB and LEONARD D. Onu, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Hillview, in the county of Greene and State of Tllnois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scythes, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to scyt-hes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and improved means for attaching the scythe to the snathe, said means permitting the blade to be adjusted at any desired angle to the snathe or to be closed up to the snathe like the blade of a pocket knife.
Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for securing blades to scyt-hes, corn knives or other similar' implements.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a scythe blade secured to the portion of a snathe in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the scythe blade and snathe.
Referring to the drawing for a more speciiic description of our invention, the numeral l designates the snathe, the outer end of which is flattened upon one side, as at 2, and a ferrule 3 is secured to the end of the snathe, said ferrule having a attened portion conforming to the flattened portion 2 of the snathe. Formed upon the flattened portion of the ferrule is a tapering boss et adapted to fit within a tapering recess 5 formed in the end of the scythe blade 6. A bolt 7 passes through the ferrule 3, through the snathe and through the boss 4land the cen- Specifcation of Letters Fatent.

tral portion of the recess 5. The bolttupon one end is provided with a polygonal head 8 which fits a similar opening in the body of the scythe. Tt is to be noted that the boss l does not extend entirely to the seat of the recess 5, thus leaving a sufficient space for adjustment and tightening of the parts. A winged nut 9 is fitted to the threaded end of the bolt 7 From the foregoing it will be obvious that a scythe, a corn knife or other similar implement having its blade provided at its inner end with a recess may be secured to its handle or snathe by means of a bolt and a permanent boss formed on the ferrule of the handle or snathe.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
The herein described scythe and snathe therefor comprising a scythe provided with asquared hole and having a circularl recess at its heel end, said recess having` outwardly inclined walls, a snathe having a ferrule provided with a. Hat surface, a tapering boss projecting from said surface and fitting said recess in the Scythe, a bolt extending through the boss and recess, the end of the snathe and the ferrule, said bolt having a squared end fitted in the squared hole in the scythe, and a winged nut applied to the opposite end of said bolt.
In testimony whereof we aiiiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
