To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIS EDGAR lnAzEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Perham, in the county of Ottertail and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to attachments for tobacco pipes, and more particularly such as in general consist of a cover provided with an opening and arranged on the bowl of the pipe, and resiliently controlled means for normally closing the opening in the cover, the means being operable to permit the entrance of air when the smoker draws on the pipe.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, simple and serviceable in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which will cause the tobacco in the pipe to burn slowly and evenly in the wind, and which will obviate the danger of burning ashes being blown back into the face of the smoker.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide in connection with he ordinary smoking pipe, means which will cause the tobacco to burn slowly and evenly in the wind. Pipe smolrers are continually troubled while smoking in the wind, by having the tobacco burn very fast so that the pipe becomes hot and their tongues are burned, and also by having the ashes blown back in their faces. To obviate this, I provide a device as described, which in general includes a cover adapted to be re movably secured upon the bowl of a pipe, and which has an opening which registers with the opening in the bowl. the opening, is a stopper. When the smoker draws on the pipe, the resilient means which supports the sto per allows the latter to be drawn down so t at air may enter the pipe.

In the specific form shown in the drawings, I provide a cover 1 of any suitable material, such as tin, aluminum or the like, and having downwardly disposed sides 2 adapted to frictionally enga e the outside of a pipe bowl. The cover l lias a portion 3 which is outwardly disposed and forms a rim. The cover is further provided with an opening 4 which registers with the opening in the bowl of the pipe, the sides of the opening being formed from a downwardly disposed portion 5 of the cover. Adapted to be located at the under side of the cover and to close the opening 4 is a stop or 6 having an upwardly disposed rim 7, tne latter serving to engage the under side of the cover adjacent to the downwardly disposed portion 5.

Located at the center of the cover is an upright 8 having its upper end 9 formed to constitute an eye. The cover has two recesses 1.0 on opposite sides thereof which serve to support an elongated, resilient member 11, the latter extending through the eye of the stopper to hold the same normally in position against the under side of the cover. As shown in the drawings, the member 11 is preferably bow-shaped, having its ends 12 located in the recesses 10.

It should be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction shown in the drawings, as others equally advantageous may be employed without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with a tobacco pipe, a cover having an opening extending therethrough and adapted to be removably ar ranged on the bowl of the pipe, and means for normally closing the opening in said cover, said means being operable to permit the entrance of air when the smoker draws on the pipe.

2. In combination with a tobacco pipe, a cover having an opening extending therethrough and adapted to be removably arranged on the bowl of the pipe, and resiliently controlled means for normally closing the opening in said cover, said means being 0 erable to ermit the entrance of air when t 1e smoker chews on the pipe.

8. In comhination with a tobacco pipe, a cover having an opening extending therethrough and adapted to he removahly arranged on the bowl of the pipe, a stopper located at the under side of said opening and normally serving to close the same, and resilient means for supporting said stopper in place.

4. In combination with a tobacco pipe, a cover having an opening extending therethrough and adapted to be removahly arranged on the bowl of the pipe, stopper having an outwardly disposed rim adapted to engage at the under side of said cover and to normally close said opening, an upright mounted on said cover and having its upper end formed into an eye, and a resilient memher arranged upon said cover and extending through the eye of said upright to su port said stopper in position, said stopper heing operable to permit the entrance of air when the smoker draws on the pipe.

5. In combination with a tobacco pipe, a cover adapted to he removahly arranged on the bowl of the pipe and having an opening, a removable stopper closing said opening and adapted to he downwardly dis osed, and resilient means tending normal y to force said stopper upwardly against said cover.
