JOHN W. JACKSON, OF DUNCAN, OKLAHOMA.
J l CHURN-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Application filed. May 25, 1908. Serial No. 434,874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duncan, in the county of Stephens and State .of Oklahoma, have invented a new and usefulChurn-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for churns and its object is to provide a device of this character designed to prevent the liquid within the churn from splashing upwardly through and onto the top of the churn..
Another object is to provide a cover which serves to prevent flies and other insects from entering the churn through the top.
A further object is to providel a cover which is cheap to manufacture, durable and efficient, and can be readily applied to churn bodies of different kinds.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical section through the cover and a .portion of the churn body, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
Referring to the drawing byl characters of reference, 1 designates the body of the cover, the same being of any preferred contour and having a central opening 2 from the wall of which depends a frusto-conical flange 3 forming a taperedy opening which is arranged in the center of the body 1. In this opening is seated the small end of an inverted frustoconical receiver 4 having a tubular extension 5 at the small end thereof which projects below the flange 3 and constitutes a guide for the stem 6 of the churn dasher. The receiver 4 is soldered or otherwise secured Within the opening 2 and the large or upper end thereof is designed to be closed by means of a top plate 7 having a central opening 8 through which the stem 6 projects. This top plate is held against lateral displacement by means of an annular flange 9 upon the lower face thereof and which is designed to project into the receiver 4. Any suitable means may be utilized for holding the body 1 upon the top of the churn body 10. In the drawing said body 1 has been shown provided with a depending annular flange 11 which projects into the body.
To use this device the body l is placed upon the open end of the churn body and the stem 6 of the dasher is inserted through the tube 5, after which the top plate 7 is placed on the stem and seated upon the up er or o en end of the receiver 4. The das er is tien Worked up land down in the usual manner and any of the liquid contents of the body 1() which may be carried upward with j the stem will be directed into the receiver 4 and will then drain back into the churn body without becoming contaminated as would be the case should said liquid contents be discharged onto the top of the churn body. Moreover, the receiver 4 and its top plate 7 prevents flies and other insects from entering the churn body through the central opening 2.
What is claimed is;
A cover for churns comprising a body having a central opening, there being a frustoconical flange depending from the body and surrounding the o ening, an imperforate inverted frusto-conica receiver non-detachably secured within said opening and having all portions thereof disposed above onwithin the opening, an elongated cylindrical guide extension depending from the small end of the receiver and below the body and a closure detachably mounted upon the upper end of Vthe receiver and having a central opening in alinement with the guide eXtenslon.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN W. JACKSON.
