Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed. May 19, 1908. Serial No. 433,750.
- To all whom it may concern:
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of broom moisteners, and to PlOVlClB' a simple, lnexpensive and eflicient device, adapted to be readlly applied to an ordinary straw broom, and.
capable of enabling the discharge of water to be readily controlled, whereby a too rapid and undesirable discharge of the contents of the moistener is prevented.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a broom moistener having a plurality of discharge tubes, arranged to dellver the moisture to the broom head at one side or face thereof, and capable of being reversed to arrange the discharge tubes at either side or face of the broom.
In the draw1ng:'F1gure 1 1s a perspective view of a moistening device, constructed 1n accordance with this 1nvent1on and shown applied to a broom. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the broom moistener. Fig. t is an enlarged detail sec tional view, illustrating the construction for controlling the valve. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:. {Fig 6 is a detail view, illustrating a modification of the discharge tube.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
1 designates a reservoir of substantially elongated annular form, having an opening 2 adapted to receivethe handle 3 of a broom,
as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The opening 2 is located a little to one side of the center to cause one side of the reservoir to project fromthe broom in excess of the other side of the reservolr.
The opening 2 tapers from bottom to top and the enlarged lower portion fits over and receives the binding wire 3*, or1other material for securing the broom straw to the handle, while the upper end of the opening is approximately the diameter of the handle of the broom. The reservoir, which is constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material, is provided at the bottom with a depending elliptical marginal flange 4, conforming to the general configuration of the upper portion of a broom head 5, and having depending extensions 6, located at the ends of the reservoir and at the side edges of the broom head. The dependingmarginal flange, which extends below the bottom of the reservoir or receptacle 1, incases the upper portion of the broom head.
The reservoir is provided at the top with a filling orifice 7 and it has an upwardly extending threaded flange 8, surrounding the filling orlfice and recelving a screw cap 9 of the ordinary construction. The bottom of the reservoir is provided at one side of the eccentrically arranged opening 2 with a longitudinal series of discharge openings 10,
which communicate with upper openings of a longitudinal valve tube 11. The valve tube 11, which is secured to the lower face of the bottom of the reservoir, extends from 7 one end of the same to the other end thereof, and it is provided in its upper and lower portions with openings, the upper opening 12 being arranged in communication with the openings 10 of the bottom of the reservoir. The valve tube or casing supports a plurality of depending substantially vertical discharge tubes 13, arranged in the same vertical plane as the valve casing and having nozzle apertures 14 at their lower ends, which are located at one side or face of the broom head below the stitched portion thereof, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The lower portions of the discharge tubes are in practice partially embedded in the broom straw, and the flow of water from the reservoir to the discharge tubes is controlled by a slidable valve 15.
The valve 15, which is provided with slots or openings 16, is circular in cross section to conform to the configuration of the interior of the tube or casing, and it is slidable longitudinally thereof to carry its openings 16 more or less into register with the openings of the bottom of the reservoir, or to carry the said openings 16 beyond the discharge openingslO, so as to arrange imperforate portions of the valve at the discharge openings for cutting ed the flow of water from the reservoir or receptacle to the discharge pipe.
The valve is provided near one end with a reduced squared portion 17, which is slidable in a rectangular opening of a short exteriorly threaded nipple 18, screwed into one end of the valve tube or casing 11 and piercing the adjacent portion of the marginal flange of the reservoir. The valve is also provided with a reduced threaded portion 19 lying beyond the squared portion 17 and engaged by an adjusting nut 20, swiveled to the marginal flange by means of a conical casing 21. The nut 19 is provided with an annular groove 22, and the conical washer or casing, which is soldered, or otherwise secured to the exterior of the marginal flange 4, is provided at the outer portion with an inwardly extending annular flange 23, fitting in the annular groove of the adjusting nut 20. The conical washer or casing permits the nut to be rotated for sliding the valve longitudinally, and at the same time it holds the nut against inward or outward movement. Instead of arranging the discharge or nozzle apertures at the lower ends of the discharge tubes, the device may be equipped with a series of discharge tubes 2-1 having closed lower ends 25 and provided at their inner sides with nozzle apertures 26 forming lateral outlets.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A broom moistener including an elongated annular reservoir having a tapered opening adapted to receive a broom handle to permit the reservoir to rest upon the broom head, said reservoir being provided at the bottom with a depending substantially elliptical marginal flange arranged to incase the upper portion of the broom head and having depending end extensions, a horizontal tube secured to the lower face of the bottom of the reservoir and extending longitudinally thereof at one side of the said opening and located within the space inclosed by the said marginal flange, a series of discharge tubes secured to and depending from the said tube and having nozzle openings arranged. to discharge the alter upon a broom below the stitched portion of the broom head, and means for controlling the flow of water from the reservoir to the discharge tubes.
2.. A broom moistener including an elongated annular reservoir having an opening adapted to receive a broom handle to permit. the reservoir to rest upon the broom head, said reservoir being provided at the bottom with a depending substantially elliptical marginal flange arranged to incase the upper portion of the broom head and having depending end extensions, a horizontal tube secured to the lower face of the bottom of the reservoir and extending longitudiinilly thereof at one side of the said opening and located within the space inclosed by the said marginal flange, a series of discharge tubes depending from the said tube, a slidable valve located within the latter and provided with openings adapted to be moved into and out of register with the discharge tubes, said valve consisting of a rod provided with a polygonal portion and having a threaded portion located beyond the polygonal portion, a fixed nipple located at one end of the tube and having a polygonal opening receiving the polygonal portion of the valve, a nut engaging the threaded portion of the valve and having a groove, and a fixed washer or casing provided with a flange fitting in the groove of the nut and swiveling the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto allixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MEYER.
