PRESSURE-REGULATOR.
No. 911,5O5.'
Specific a'tioii of Letters Patent.
rammed Feb. a, 1909.
Application filed March 14, 1988. Serial No. 421,019,
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ARTHUR KLEINFELDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Hoboken, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
'lhis invention relates to the construction of pressure regulating or controlling devices and pressure indicating devices, such as are commonly employed in the handling of liquefied carbonic acid gas.
It has been proposed heretofore to combine both ressure regulating devices and pressure incl and to accomplish this result'bo'tlifof such devices have been arranged to be operated from a single diaphragm which is'subjeot to the pressure of the gas, the diaphragm being either positively connected tothe two*devices respectively or opposed by a spring for the urpose of closing the valve through whicii gas is admitted. In either" case the indicating devices and the regulating devices have not been sufiiciently free in action to permit of sirable. 7 r r Oneobject of the present invention, therefore, is 'to so improve the construction of devices of this character as to secure the advantage of combining both regulating and indicating devices one structure While permitting each to operate with the freedom which is necessary to securethe desirable accuracy and' sensitiveness of each.
Another object of the invention is to ro-- vide for a more positive closing of the mlet valve, so that if the valve lug should be held from its seat, for examp e,}by a particle of dust or dirt, the gas which passes will continue to act upon the mechanism to cause the valve plug to be ressed more firmly against the seat until the eakage is stopped. K
A further object is to provide a-con'struc tion in which. only one gas chamber shall be required for the operation of both the indicating and regulating devices. Furthermore, the arrangement of the parts is such that in their normal relations the inlet valve is closed and is held closed unless pressure is applied to the valve controlling means in oppa,
sition to the normal pressure thereon, such icating devices in one structure, 7
such nicety inoperation as is deably through aspring, the tension of which is capable of regulation by the 0 erator.
'lhe invention will bemore f'u ly explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is aface view of the indicator, a portion of the gas controlling devices being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in section on a plane at right angles tothat of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial detail view showing a slight modification.
In the construction represented in the drawing the gas is admitted to the improved indicating and regulating devices through a suitable connection a. The regulation head I), with Which the gas connection is establishedjhas aninlet duct orchannel b which communicates with a} val've port 6 a duct .orchannel bfrom which the gas pressure is transmitted through a channelb to the diaphragm chamber hereinafter referred to and from which gas is conducted through a duct or channel 5 to a valve chamber 6 from which the gas passes through a valve ort 6 and a duct or channel 12 to the pipe W ich may beconnec'ted: to the regulating head at b for the urpose of conducting the gas,
under regu ated pressure, to the place of :0 held in place by a cap 0? and a t readed stem 0 provided with a handwheel c The regulating or diaphragm chamber (1, to which the pressure of the gas is transmitted, is formed by opposite diaphragms d and d properly secured attheir margins to an annular frame or casting which may and preferably does form an integral part of what has been called the regulating head 5. Such annular casting is properly secured within the casing'e which supports the indicator dial e. The diaphragm d may act upon the indicator needle e? through any suitable mechanism, that shown comprising theusual arrangement of lever f, quadrant f and pinionf on the staff f3 which carries the ind1cator needle.
The diaphragm d which forms the other side of the common gas chamber (1, but is free' from the: diaphragm d and is not directly affected by its movements, controls the reducing valve through means which will now be described; Mounted upon a fulcrum g, preferably near the marginof the diaphragm (Z is a lever g which bears upon the diaphragm 01 through the intermediary of an adjusting screw 9 which may beset before the casing e is applied, for the purpose of properly establishin or adjusting the relation of the lever g to tie diaphragm d The free end of the lever g bears upon the free end of a cam lever h, andit may also be provided with a finger h for the purpose of moving the lever h;positively witlrthe lever g when the latter is movedashereinaiter described. Theheel h of the .cam lever 71 restsupon a bearingplate 71/3 which is adjustably supported by a set screw it? accessible from the outside of the casing. The set screw ,htis carriedin the endoi' a cap it which is supported, ashereinaiter described, by the regulating headb, being slotted at oneside, as at hflto permit the passage of the lever arm h. Thelever h is in operative relation with a plunger h, being pre l'erably pivotally connected therewith, andthe latter is arranged tocontrolthe admission oi' gas through the port'bf In order that escape of gas may beprevented without requiring packing ofthe plunger 7L a diaphragm i, of any suitable ,material, such ascelluloid, is interposed between the plunger 7/ and the portb being tightly, clamped atits margin, against theseat provided therefor on the regulating headb by a cape" ;,through, which th plunger it passes and to which the cap Yrflis secured.
Forthe purpose of opposing with an adjustable pressure theoutward movement of the diaphragm d under the varying pressure of gas in the gas chamber d, andthereby regulating the reducing valve, thereis provided a spring k which bears against the leveng in opposition to the diaphragm d andis adjustedas to its tension by a screw is mounted ina supplementalcasing c and provided with a hand wheel 7r.
In describing the operation of the .im
proved instrun1ent,-it may be assumed that allofthe parts .have been properly set or adjustedso that gas flows through the Ort b at the predetermined pressure. It willbe obvious thatsuch as passes the port I) escapes through the channels b 6 'b (the port If being open) and b The pressure of the gas transmitted through the channel or duct b to the gas chamber 01 acts upon both diaphragms d and 01 causing the pointer e to perform its function of indicating the pressure and, so long as the pressure remains unchanged, causing the valve 12 to be held open to the same extent. Should the ressure of gas admitted through the port increaseever so slightly, it will not only cause such increase of pressure to be inai- .cated through the movement of the diaphra m d, but, through the diaphragm 01?, it wil move the lever g outward slightly,
through such port.
and this movement of the lever g, rocking the lever it upon its cam surface or eccentric will move the plunger it slightly toward the port b thereby reducing the llow of gas Should a particle of dust or dirt lodge between the valve seat I) and the diaphragm i, the gas will continue to escape and to bulge the diaphragm (/3 further outward, thereby causing greater pressure to be exerted through the lever 7r until the particle is .rushed or embedded in the diaphragm i sothat the passage of gas is entirely n'evented. Should the pressure of gas fall belovwthe predctcrmincrl degree the diaphragm (Z will be permitted to yield inwardly in response tothe pressure ol the spring 7c acting through the lever g" and the lever it will, through the linger it, be c:-.uscd to move in a direction to withdraw the plunger b and thereby permit the port It to be opened more widely. Through thev adjusting screws 9 71/ andtr the operation of the several working parts may he so controlled as to meet varying conditions or requirements or to compensate for wear. Through the operation ol the valve c the fiowof gas from the regulator may be cut oii at any time. It will be obvious that although there is but a single gas chamlr-cr,
fected by the movement ol. the other e..- cept, as it may be, momentarily) and the sensitiveness and accuracy of indication are therefore preserved together with the sensitiveness and accuracy of regulation.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the lever g is shown as provided with a spring 3 which serves merely to hold the lever in engagement with its fulcrum q. In this modification the spring I": and the adjusting screw 75 of the construction shown in Fig. 2. are omitted, and in place thereof the lover g is provided with a light spring 5 which has only power enough to overcome the friction of the lever /t and its associatml parts, and thereby open the valve port without ol'l ering resistance to the movement of the diz'rphragm d 'lhc adjusting screw 9 of the construction shown in Fig. l
is, in the construction shown in F 3, cx-
tended through the shell or cssing c, as shown at g and is provided with a hand wheel g. It will be seen that in the operation of this form of the mechanism, the lever g is held normally by the spring in such position as to cause the cam lever 72 to open the valve port and permit gas to enter. ihe adjusti g screw f is so set that when the desired pressure has been attained. in the gas chamber (1 the diaphragm (1" will then have been bulged sullicicntly to make contact with the end of the screw and, through the lever g, to rock the cam lever 7t and close the valve port 6 By adjusting the screw 9 toward and from the diaphragm llO euros the pressure required. to operate the valve may be-diminished or increased. V
It will be obvious that. various changes in details of construction. and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, which is not limited to the precise construction shown and described herein.
