Description

tnted lteres @tutti @tithe Letters Patent No. 91,134, dated June 8, 1869.
IMPROVED REGULATOR FOR VULCANIZING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may comme:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HURD, of the city of Memphis, in the county of. Shelby, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Regulator to be Used in Vulcanizing Rubber; aud I dodeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a simple apparatus of tubes, also steam, gas, and condensingchamber, to keep the dental or other vulcanizer at a ,regular heat, by furnishing just so much gas as the the amount of gasrequired to heat the vulcanizer atI any heat desired, preventing the possibility of explosions of vulcanizers or spoiling of Work by an excess of heat, and enabling the operator to do his work more to his liking, and that Wit-hout watching.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
Figure I is a perspective view, showing the apparatus attached to a vulcanizer, ready for use.
Figure II is a sectional view of the apparatus.
A, vulcanizer. Y
B, condensing-chamber, to receive the water formed from the condensed steam, preventing the water from running into the gas-burner` and extinguishing the flame.
C, steam-chamber, partly filled with Water, for the purpose of generating steam.
D, gas-regulator.
E, suppporting-rod, to keep the apparatus in place.
F, rubber band at top of gas-chamber.
G, rubber band at bottom otlgas-chamber.
H, rubber' band that tits around the condensingchamber, and secures the auges through which pass the connecting-pipes, as also do F 'and G.
o, tubing through which the gas is conducted to gas-regulator from main pipe.
t', orifice in conducting gas-pipe.
m, upper' orifice, very small, connecting with orce t', barely keeping a small supply of gas when the flow is entirely stopped at lower orice fn..
n, lo'wer orifice, furnishing a full supply of gas.
b, conducting-pipe to'condenser.
a, conducting-pipe to burner, under vulcanizer..
d, inner sliding pipe, that regulates the height of regulator.
c, pipe leading to regulator.
p, rubber s ocket, to it around rod E, to enable the operator to place the regulator at any height desired.
In the use of this, my apparatus, place it upon the top of vulcauizer. Light the gas under vuloanizer A. It will shortly become heated, as also the steam-gem erator O, forcing the water, by the accumulation of steam, up through pipe d, into gas-regulator I), to gas-regulating pipe t'. If you wish to run your vulcanizer at a low heat, slide down pipe d, and for high heat, slide it up.
In setting one of these regulators to a vuloanizer, raise the heat in the vulcanizer to the' given point desired, by the thermometer', with regulator sitting upon it. Then slip the pipe d gently down, until the orifice n'touches the watera and mark it for same heat next time, and also the same fora highheat, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by lietters Patent, is-
The application of steam, when used 1n regulating the dow of gas or heat, in the vulcanizing of rubber, as herein described, using for that purpose the aforesaid apparatus, or any other substantially the same, and 'which will produce the intended eieet.
GEORGE H. HURD.
