"BEATY M'. RANDALL AND RICHARD R. RANDALL, O BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA.
SQUARE.
,i Speccatidn of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
. Application filed January 21, 1908.` -Seral No. 411,968.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that we, BEATY `M. RANDALL and RICHARD R. RANDALL, citizens ofthe UnitedStates, residingiat Bloomington, in the county of Monroeand State of Indiana,
have invented certaincnew and useful ,Im-
provements in Squares, of which the follow;-
ing is a specification.
This invention relates to squares, and has for its object to provide a square of this character which may be used as a try-square, tee square and bevel square, andwhich can be easily adjusted for its various uses.
@ther objects and advantages willbe apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structures shown and described, may be made within the scope of the claimswithtion. Y
In the drawings, Figure l is a view, showing my invention in use as YVa try-square.` Fig. 2 isa similar view showing the Ainvention in use as a tee square.
at 9. ThebladeS is secured by .fasteningsr 10, between themembers 9 at one end there` of. The blades 7 and V8 respectively are provided with scales 1l. y
A` gage blade 12 is provided, and is mounted between the members 9 of the blade 7, for movement therebetween. The blade 12 is slotted longitudinally as at 13, and through Y this slot, and .through the slots 9 formed in the blade 7, there isV shown a bolt 14:, having a. clamping nut 15as shown. The blade 12 is provided with a scale 12. `A brass wear plate 1G, is mounted in the faces of the members 9, and this plate surrounds the slots 9', formed in the members 9.
A portion of the blade 8 between the memf bers 9 is cut away as shown, to form shoulders 18, and 19, and it will thus be seen, that when the tool is not in use, the blade 12 may be shoved between the members 9 andagainst the shoulders 18 and 19 of the blade 8, and"l out departing from the spirit of the inven- Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the inventionin use as a A thus prevent ylateral movement of the blade 12. When it is desired to lay oil a miter of any angle, the blade 12 is swung downwardly until its edge engages the inner edge of the blade 8. y
In use as a try-square the blade 12 is shoved downwardly vand is then turned at right angles andv brought into alinement with the blade 7. In this position of the tool it will be seen that Vthe scale 12 on the blade 12 will form a continuation of the scale 11, and thus increase marking surface is obtained. Vthen it is desired to use the tool'as a vertical gage, the blade 12 is made to assumea vertical position and may then be clamped to the blade 7, at dii'erent points along the scale. Y
"What is claimed is:
1. A square including vertical and horizontal blades, the horizontal blade having a longitudinally. extending slot therein, a blade movable `on said horizontal blade and having a longitudinally extending slot, a clamping' bolt disposed in theslots and adapted to clamp the last named blade at `dierent points of its movement, the vertical blade having shoulders, and arranged to receive the' movable blade, when not in use.
2. A square including vertical and horizontal blades, the horizontal blade being formed of two parallel spaced members, said members having longitudinally extending slots, the vertical blade being secured between the members of the horizontal blade, the vertical blade having a portion between the members of the horizontal blade cut away to form shoulders, a blade `movable between the members of the horizontal blade and having a ,longitudinally extending slot, the blade having its end cut at an angle and adapted to lie at times between the shoulders formed on the vertical blade, and a clamping bolt arranged in the slots of the horizontal arm and in the slot of the movable arm and adapted to clamp saidmovable blade at different lpoints of its movement.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures, in presence oftwo witnesses.
. l BEATY M. RANDALL.
