IPFL ER WITNESSES: WW 4.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES W. WIPFLER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
REGISTER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. WIPFLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany ing drawings.
This invention relates to registers for hot air furnaces and the like and more especially to means for operating the shutter whereby it is held locked in any desired position.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly poine ed out in the appended claims.
In the drawin s, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation o a register embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of the register. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View in detail of a shutter and shutter lock. Fig. 4 is a view in detail of the lock removed from the register.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a rectangular frame adapted to form the casing of an opening in a wall communicatin with a hot air pipe or flue, and provided wit a face or grille plate 2. A shutter frame 4 is formed or secured on the back of the casing by screws 3 or the like and a shutter 5 of suita le material is pivoted therein on a horizontal bar 6at a point below its upper edge, so as to close inwardly against strips or stops 7 which are preferably oblique to the face plate so as to be slightly inclined toward the flue when the register is set. In the preferred form of construction, the shutter is a sheet metal plate folded on itself along its upper edge with the margin 8 of the downturned art being reverted to form a tubular bearing or the rod.
A look 9 which is in form a disk, is secured by a stud 10 on a lug 11 on the rear of the grille 2 to oscillate in substantially the horizontal lplane of the shutter pivot. A substantia y radial cam arm 12 on the disk has a rounded outer end rocking and sliding against the shutter above its pivot axis, while a second dependent radial cam arm 13 has an end rocking and sliding on the shutter below its ivot axis. An operating arm 14 on the dis extends through a slot 15 of the face plate.
In 0 oration, swinging the operating arm rocks 1; e shutter in or out, the two cam arms Specification of Letters Patent.

direction and to bear outwardly against it below the ivot axis when turned in the other direction.
2. A register for a hot air furnace and the like com rising an upright frame, a shutter pivoted t ierein between its ends to swing on a horizontal axis, and an operating ock oscillatory in substantially the horizontal plane of the shutter pivot axis, adapted to bear outwardly against the shutter above its pivot axis when turned in one direction and to bear outwardly against it below the pivot axis when turned in the other direction.
3. A register for a hot air furnace and the like comprising an upright rectangular frame, a shutter of sheet metal folded on itself along its upper ed 'e, the lower margin of the downturned part being bent into a tubular bearing, a horizontal pivot rod in the frame on which the bearing swings, and an operating lock oscillatory in a plane transverse to the shutter, adapted to bear outwardly against the shutter above its pivot axis when turned in one direction and to bear outwardly against it below the pivot axis when turned in the other direction.
4. A register for a hot air furnace and the like com rising an upright frame, a shutter pivoted t icrein between its ends to swing on a horizontal axis, and an operating lock consisting of a disk pivoted to turn in substantially the horizontal plane of the pivot axis, a cam arm thereo nbearing against the adj acent face of the shutter above its pivot axis, a second cam arm thereon bearing against the adjacent face of the shutter below its pivot axis, and an operating arm extending forwardly from the disk.
5. A register for a hot air furnace and the like comprising an upright rectangular frame, a shutter of sheet metal folded on itself along its up er ed e, the lower margin of the downturne part ein'g bent into a tusisting of a disk pivoted to turn in substanbular bearing, a horizontal pivot rod in the frame on which the bearing swings, and an operating lock consisting of a disk pivoted to turn in substantially the horizontal plane of the pivot axis, a cam arm thereon bearing against the adjacent face of the shutter above its pivot axis, a second cam arm thereon bearing against the adjacent face of the shutter below its pivot axis, and an operating arm extending forwardly from the disk.
6. A register for a hot air furnace and the like comprising an upright frame, a shutter pivoted therein between its ends to swing on a horizontal axis, and an operating lock contially the horizontal plane of the pivot axis, a cam arm thereon bearing against the adj acent face of the shutter above its pivot axis, a second cam arm thereon bearing against the adjacent face of the shutter below its pivot axis, and an operating arm extending i forwardly from the disk, said operating lock being integrally formed in one piece.
7. A register for a hot air furnace and the like consisting of an upright rectangular casing, a grille removably secured therein, a shutter frame at the rear side of the casing, a shutter pivoted therein between its ends to swing on a horizontal axis, and an operating lock oscillatory in a plane transverse to the shutter adapted to bear outwardly against the shutter above its pivot axis when turned in one direction and to bear outwardly against it below the pivot axis when turned in the other direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
