Patented Au 21, "1917.
Application filed December 11, 1913, Serial No. 806,081. Renewed November 9, 1916. Serial No. 1130,4401},
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ONnsrME READMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Grand Mere, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to stove grates.
In order to more clearly disclose the con struction, operation, and use, of the invention, reference should be had to' the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application. Throughout the several figures of the drawingslike reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a corner perspective view of the device as applied; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the coal grate; Fig. 3 is a detail of the shaker means; Fig. 4 is a section on'line 4-4 of Fig.
3, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the ash' grate; Fig. 7 is a detail of the ash grate open;
and

pin.
The main objects of the invention are,
to provide asimply constructed and easily operated means for shaking a fire to re- 8 is a detail of the shaker limiting move the ashes, and for recovering any coal from the ashes thus removed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the fire box and ash pit casing of any standard construction. Within the casing 1 a cast iron frame 2 is provided.
Two intermeshing, concave grate members 3 are pivotally mounted in the frame 2 by means of trunnions 4. At one end of the grate the trunnions 4 are secured to the outer ends of arms 5, the inner ends of which are pivotally connected to the lower ends of links 6, which are pivotally connected at their upper ends to an arm 7 by means'of a pin 8 passing through a vertical slot in the extended end 9 of the frame 2.
The lower end of lever 7 is pivotally connected to an arm 10 secured on a rotatably mounted stud shaft 11 pressed by a bracket 12, and having its outer portion of squared or polygonal shape to receive a shaker, not shown.
The operation is as follows: Supposing levers 7 and 10 to be in the position shown in Fig. 3, by rotating the stud shaft in the direction of the arrow the lever 10 will act to force the lever 7 upward, and this will act, through pin 8, links 6, levers 5, and
direction by a pin 13 inserted in a suitable bore in the frame 2, and in the other direction by the bracket 12, the instrument used for shaking purposes striking these objects for limiting purposes.
If it is desired to empty the fire box, the pin 13 is withdrawn, and stud shaft 11 is given a full half rotation, to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. This rotates grate members 3 downwardly and outwardly, into vertical position, and then dumps the entire contents of the fire box into the ash pit, as shown. The ashes fall on to the ash grate 14, pivotally mounted on trunnions on a frame 15, provided with a handle 16 and slidably mounted in grooves 17 integral with the casing 1. By agitating the ash grate 14 and frame 15, back and forth by means of handle 16, the ashes and coal are separated, the ash falling through the grate into a suitable removable receptacle. The ashes are then removed and another receptacle is placed under the grate 14 which is then turned on its trunnions, so as to drop the coal into the new receptacle.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a stove grate of the character described, a frame, grate members rotatably mounted therein, compound lever means for imparting simultaneous and corresponding intermittent vertical. motion to the grate members and for dumping the grate, and means for limiting such motion.
2. In grate of the character described; a frame; grate members rotatably mounted therein and adapted to be swung clownwardly and outwardly so as to leave an unobstructed opening the entire width of the grate,-forfdumping purposes; a lever; lever connections between the mountings of the said grate membersand the said lever; and means for imparting intermittent up and down motion to the said lever and for dumping the grate.
3. In a grate of the character described; a frame; grate members provided with integral end trunnions located at the outer side thereof and rotatably mounted in the said frame, the trunnions at one end of the grate being of, polygonal. cross section; a stud shaft mounted at the center of the front of the said frame and adapted to be rotated; means for rotating the said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
stud shaft; an arm secured on the inner end of the stud shaft; a lever having its lower end pivotally connected to the outer end of the said arm; arms having their outer ends secured to the polygonal trunnions; links having their lower ends pivotally connected to the inner ends of the said arms, and their upper ends pivotally connected to the upper end of the first mentioned arm; and means for limiting the rotation of the said. shaft for shaking purposes, the said means being removable to permit full rotation of the said shaft, for dumping purposes.
/ In a device of the character described, a frame, grate members rotatably mounted therein, arms connected to the mountings of the grate members at their lower ends,
links pivotally connected to the upper ends of the arms, a lever pivotally connected to the upper ends of the links, means for imparting intermittent up and down motion to the lever, means for limiting such motion, and means for dumping the grate.
In witness whereof I. have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
