T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I?. JANEs, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, inthe county of Henry, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and` use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in sliding gates and it has for its pri- Vmary object the provision of an exceedingly simple, inexpensive and durable ate which may be readily opened and closed from either side, and which 1s ositively guided and held against lateral disp acement during its move* ments.
The invention resides more especially, however, in the particular constructionof the intermediate and rear ate posts, in the particular devices carried y said postsfor engagement with the gate, and in the particular devices employed for opening and closing the gate when the levers with which said devices are connected are rocked.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding arts or features, as the case may be, are esignated by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the gate in its closed position. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the intermediate, and rear posts, respectively.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates generally a gate which is slidable bodily backwards andv forwards through a longitudinal slot 2 formed in a vertical post 3 located at one side of the road, the gate comprising, as shown, an o en rectangular frame whose various mem ers are formed of sections of gas-pipe jointed together at their adjacent ends, the opposite members of the frame having cross-wires strung thereto in any preferred manner.
The gate is further provided with a rearwardly-projecting arm 4which forms a continuation of the top member of the gate frame and extends through a vertical slot 5 formed in a post 6 disposed in the rear of and in alinement with the post 3, said arm being connected at its free end with the lower rear corner of the gate by a diagonal brace 7. The front or outer end of the gate, when the latter is in its closed position, fits in a vertical recess 8 formed in a post 9 located at the o posite side of the road in alinement with t e posts 3 and 6. vThe movement of the gate into and out of closed position is effected by means of a pair of operating levers l() pivoted to uprights 11 located at o posite sides of the gate, the inner end of eac lever carrying a link 12 which is pivoted to an eyebolt 13 whose stem is secured centrally to a lever 14 pivoted at its front end to the post 3 hereinafter termed the intermediate post. The rear end of the lever 14 is pivotally engaged in the bifurcated upper end of a link 15, whose lower end is connected in a similar manner with the front end of a lever 17, the last-mentioned lever having its rear end pivoted to the rear post 6. The lever 17 is connected with the gate by means of a double lever 18, which consists of a pair of arallel rods disposed upon op osite sides of tliqe gate, the lower ends of sai rods being pivoted to the lower rear corner of the gate, and their upper ends to the lever 17 rearwardly of the connection of the latter with the link 15.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that when the outer end of either operating lever is depressed, the gate actuating lever 14 will be swung vertically upon its pivot, raising the link 15 and lever 17, and moving the gate rearwardly through the intermediate post into open position, owing to the-lever connection 18 between the gate and the lever 17.
During its movement in either direction, the gate is guided and positively held against lateral displacement y means of devices carried by the intermediate and rear posts. The devices carried by the first-mentioned post include a air of rollers 19 set into the walls of the s ot 3 directly opposite each other and arranged to rotate in a horizontal plane and to engage with the top rail of the gate which passes therebetween, and a single roller 20 revolubly mounted upon a crosspin 21 which extends through the lower end of the slot, the lower rail of the gate traveling upon said roller. The rear post 6 is provided towards its upper end with a pair of crosspins 22 disposed one above the other, each pin carryin a revoluble roller 23. The gate arm 4 whic as stated, forms a continuation of the upper rail of the gate, extends between the rollers 23 and is engaged thereby. The
several rollers therefore not only support the gate, but also positively guide the same, as will be understood.
The outer end of each operating lever carries a depending strap 24, for enabling the levers to be readily depressed. It Will be understood, however, that the gate may be opened Without necessitating the manual operation of either lever by merely grasping the top rail of the gate and pushing the latter backwardly in the direction of the interme.

What is claimed is:
1. The combination, With a pair of longitudinally-slotted posts, of a gate slidable for- Wards and backwards through the slot in one post and provided With a rearwardly-extending horizontal arm projecting through the slot in the other post; a rearwardly-eXtende ing lever pivoted at its front end in the upper end of the slot in the first-named post a forwardly-extending lever pivoted at its rear end in the upper end of the slot in the second-named post; a link connecting the rear end of the first-named lever with the front end of the second-named lever and a air of inclined parallel rods having their oWer ends pivoted to the lower rear corner of the gate and their upper ends extending across the gate arm on opposite sides thereof and pivoted to the second-named lever.
2. The combination, With a pair of longitudinally slotted posts, of a gate slidable bodily through the slot in one post and provided With a rearwardly-extending arm projecting through the slot in the other post, said gate including top and bottom rails a pair of rollers arranged to rotate in a horizontal plane in the upper end of the slot in the iirst-mentioned post for engagement With the opposite sides of the top rail a roller located at the bottom of said slot and arranged for engagement With the under surface of the bottcm rail g and a pair of spaced rollers located in the upper portion of the slot in the other post, and arranged one above the other, for engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of said arm.
3. The combination, with a pair of longitudinally slotted posts, of a gate slidable bodily through the slot in one post and provided With a rearwardly-extending arm projecting through the slot in the other post, said gate including top and bottom rails; a rearivardly-extending lever pivoted at its front end in the upper end of the slot in the first-named post, a forwardly-extcnding lever pivoted at its rear end in the upper end of the slot in the second named post; a link connecting the rear end of the lirst-nained lever `with the front end of the second named lever; a pair of inclined parallel rods having their lower ends pivoted to the lower rear corner of the gate, and their upper ends extending across tlie gate arm on opposite sides` thereof and pivoted to the second named lever; a pair of rollers arranged to rotate in a horizontal plane in the upper end of the slot in the first-mentioned post for engagement With the opposite sides of the top rail, a roller located at the bottom of said slot and a1'- ranged for engagement with the under surface of the bottom rail, and a pair of spaced rollers located in the upper portion of the slot in the other post, and arranged one above the other, for engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of said arm.
