To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL TROG, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of Bielefold, in the Province of Westphalia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Intermittent Couplings, of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention relates to a coupling between a moving shaft and the mechanism of such automatic machines as cash registers, ticket printing and delivery machines and the like, especially to such as are driven by means of a motor instead of the hitherto employed crank.
The feature of the present invention is that by pressin a button or inserting a coin the detent of al ver is disengaged, which lever is provided with an end having guide cam curves therein. This end with the guide curves swings under the actionof a spring and thereby a centrally pivoted pawl is brought into engagement with a disk having a notch therein. After one complete revolution. of the pawl carrying disk a projection on this disk engages with a projection on the lever whereby this lever is returned into its initial position where it is held. by the detent and thereby the disengagement of the coupling is automatically effected. By means of the coaction of a pin fastened to the coupling pawl with a fixed disk provided with a notch, the pawl carrying disk and the shaft to which it is fasten d are stopped in correct position while during movement of the pawl carrying disk and its shaft and after the coupling pawl has been inserted into its notch in the driven disk the retention of the pawl in the driving disk notch is secured.
In the drawings which illustrate the arrangement according to the present invention Figure 1 is a side view in t re normal position partly shown in section on a line CD of Fig. 2, 2 is a front view, Fig. 3 is a section on a line E -F of Figs. 1 or 4, Fig. 4 is a section on. a line AB of Fig. Fig. 1 shows the coupling in the disengaged position, while Fig. 4 shows the parts in engaging position.
i'he driving shaft of the motor carrries a worm 5 which engages in a worm wheel 6. This worm wheel 6 is mounted loosely on the shaft 7 and is firmly fixed to the driving disk 8. On the shaft 7 there is fixed a disk 9 which carries the coupling pawl 10 which is pivoted about the point 11. The coupling pawl 10 is provided on its tail end, that is the end remote from its engaging end on one side with a pin or roller 12 which passes through an opening a: (Fig. 4) in the disk 9 and on the other side with a pin 13. The pin 13 is directed towards the disk 15 which disk is prevented from turning by means of an arm 16 which is fixed in any convenient way to some fixed part of the machine. The disk 15 is provided with a recess 14 in which the pin 13 lies in the normal position, that is the position taken up when the mechanism is at rest. The pin or roller 12 engages in the curved groove 18 which is formed at the end of the lever 24 by means of projections on said lever. The lever 24 is freely mounted on an axis 19 and is subjected to the tension of the spring 26. In the normal position according to Fig. 1 the lever 24 which carries the groove is held by means of a bell crank detent lever 21 which is revoluble about a pin 22. This bell crank lever is subjected to the action of a spring 28 and lies with its nose against a projection 25 on the lever 24 and thereby prevents the lever 24 from moving under the action of its spring 20. The lever 24 also is provided with a projection 26 which coacts with a projection 27 on the disk 9 as hereinafter explained.
ihe method of working of this arrangement is as follows: Assume that the worm wheel 6 together with the driving disk 8 receive a clockwise rotation from the motor.
In the normal position shown in Fig. 1 the U notch 14 of the disk 15 and the front end of 9 the pawl 10 is out of engagement with the driving shaft 8. In this position the worm wheel 6 and the driving disk8 rotate freely and the pawl carrying disk 9 and its shaft 7 are prevented from rotating by means of the pin 13 which lies in the notch 14 of the fixed disk 15. If now the bell crank lever 21 is swung about its axis 22 into the position shown in Fig. 4 so that its nose releases the projection 25 of the lever 24, the lever 24 under the action of its spring 20 swings outward to the right. By the outward swinging of the lever 24 with its groove 18 the pawl 10 is caused to swing about its pin 11, so that the front end of the pawl en gages in the notch of the driving disk 8. Simultaneously thepin 13 is raised out of the notch 14 in the fixed disk 15. 'lhe driving disk 8 now drives the disk 9 to which the pawl 10 is fixed and thereby the shaft 7 is also driven. Immediately thereupon the pin 13 rises onto the outer circumference of the disk 15 and thereby prevents the tail end of the pawl falling downward and sothe front end of the pawl is held in the engagement with the driving disk 8. Naturally during the rotation the pin 12 passes out of the stationary groove 18.
As soon as one revolution is completed and the in 12 once more enters the groove 18 the pro ection 27 engages with the pointed end of the projection 26 on the lever 24 so as to push the lever towards the left against the action of its sprin Under the action of the spring 23 the detent 21 is immediately brought into position for holding the lever 24 in its normal osition. When the lever 24 swings to the eft the sides of the groove 18 press on the tail end of the pawl 10 and therey the front end is drawn out of engagement with the notch on the driving member 8, whereby the cou ling is disen aged. Simultaneously with t e last described action the pin 13 enters the notch 14 on the disk 15 and ghefieby prevents further rotation of the pawl Having thus fully described the nature of my invention what I desire to secure by Letters' Patent of the United States is 1. In combination a spring controlled lever, a bell crank detent for said lever, a driven disk, a centrally pivoted pawl carried by said disk, a pin on the tail end of said pawl coacting with said spring controlled lever, a constantly rotating notched driving disk with a notch in which said pawl engages when the spring controlled lever is released by its detent, and a projection on the pawl carrying disk coacting with the lever to return the same to engagement with its detent after one revolution of the pawl carrying disk.

In combination, a driving member having anotch therein, a spring controlled lever, a detent mechanism therefor, a driven disk, a pawl carried by said disk and adapted to be pressed into and out of engagement with the notch on said driving member by said lever, a in (13) on the tail end of said pawl, and a ed notched disk in the notch of which said pin engages when the pawl on the disk is in position to be operated upon by said lever.
