To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. PoLLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled Mechanism; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to a coin controlled mechanism, and more particularly to a device of that class for use with vending or similar machines.
I am aware that mechanisms of this general character have been in use prior to my invention, in which sliding bars, somewhat similar to my construction have been utilized, which bars have heretofore been operated by means of push buttons attached to one section of the bar. 7
It is the object of my invention to provide a device which may be operated by means of a revoluble shaft, actuated by a suitable crank, and in accomplishing this object, I provide means for so connecting the shaft and sliding bars, that upon the introduction of a coin between the bar sections, a working union may be formed, although the shaft and bars are independent of each other to the extent that the shaft may be revolved idly until a coin is inserted.
In illustrating my mechanism, I have shown parts adapted for use with a vending machine and other parts which may be used in combination with my mechanism, but which are not claimed as a portion of this invention, the present application being limited expressly to the coin controlled mechanism and the elements necessary for its operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide the improved details of structure which will presently be fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which, t

Referring more in detail to the parts,8 represents a frame in which the shaft 9 is journaled which shaft is provided-at one end with the crank 10. Rigidly secured to the opposite end of shaft 9 is a pear shaped cam 11, the parts being so arranged that when the crank is in its lowered position as shown in Fig. I, the swell ofthe cam will be in substantially its uppermost position, as shown in Fig. I1.
Movably mounted on the cross brace 12 of frame 8, by means of a set screw 13, carried by brace 12 and eX- tending through a slot 14, is a pitman 15. At its rear end, pitman 15 is provided with a segmental finger 16, Which fits over cam 11 said finger having inwardly directed lugs 17- 17, which normally fit beneath the swell of cam 11. At its forward end, brace 12 is provided with a slot 18, through which a lug 19 on pitman 15 is projected, and in which said lug travels during the backward and forward movement of the pitman. In pitman 15 and lug 19 is a slot 20, through which is projected a set screw 21, adapted to carry on its inner end an arm 22, which arm extends backwardly in the direction of the shaft 9 and has a nose 23 projecting into a slot 24 in a coin chute 25, an adjustment of arm 22 being had by means of a set screw 48 in the end of lug 19.
On frame 8, concentric with the bearing of shaft 9 is an inwardly projecting flange 28, having a slot 34 in line with the brace 12 of frame 8.
Rigidly secured to shaft 9 is a circular plate or disk 26, having rigidly secured to its inner face a peripherally recessed disk 27. Loosely mounted on shaft 9, between disk 27 and crank 10-is a sleeve 29, and rigid on the end of sleeve 29, and abutting against disk 27 is a collar 30. Collar 30 and disk 26 are of substantially the same diameter and fit snugly within flange 28, although being free for rotation therein.
Pivoted on collar 30, between its periphery and that of disk 27 is a pawl 31, one end of which is held depressed by the spring 32, and its other end yieldingly extendingoutwardly so that a head 33 thereon is projected beyond the periphery of collar 30, into the recess 34 in flange 28; said pawl being provided on its under side with a lug 42 adapted to fit within the recess 43 in disk 27.
Slidingly mounted in a seat formed by brackets 3535, projecting inwardly from brace 12 is a sliding bar 36, the rear end of which is offset at 37 and provided with a head which projects rearwardly in line with, and partially projected into the recess 34 in flange 28,
and normally abuts against head 33 of pawl 31. At its forward end, bar 36 is also offset, and has a nose 39 projecting through a slot 40 into the coin chute 25 opposite the nose on arm 22.
Rigidly secured on sleeve 29 and abutting against collar 30 is a wheel 45, carrying on its outerface a rail 44, adapted to engage the offset of head 37 of bar 36 when said bar is moved forwardly, and 46 is a spring mounted between apin 47 on the frame 8 and a pin 47' on the bar 36, for the purpose of retracting said bar after being released by rail 44, as will presently b described. 4
In the operation of my mechanism, the shaft 9 is revolved by means of crank 10, the revolution of said shaft carrying with it the cam 11, which is rigidly secured thereto, which cam on its forward movement engages the lug 17 of finger 16, carrying pitman 15 backwardly in the direction of the shaft the pitman in turn drawing arm 22 backwardly and causing the nose 23 to project into the coin chute During the portion of the revolution of the shaft and cam, when the cam swell is in engagement with neither of the arms 1717:, the pitman remains stationary and as the shaft completes its revolution, the cam 11 engages lug 17 and moves the pitman and arm 22 back to their original position and drawing nose 23 from the coin chute. As the nose 23 is not projected far enough into the coin slot to engage the nose on bar 36, no action is produced by the revolution of the shaft, except the backward and forward movement ofthe pitman and arm 22. When, however, the coin is placed in the chutepit descends into engagement with the nose 23 on arm 22 and the nose 39 on arm 36 forming a connecting link therebetween, so that upon the revolution of the shaft, and the oscillation of the pitman, bar 36 is moved backwardly, forcing the rear head of bar 36 into engagement with the head 33 of the spring pressed pawl 31; the depression of said pawl forcing the lug 42 into the recesses 43 in the periphery of disk 27. As the shaft continues to revolve, disk 27 is carried around thereby, and the lug engaging the edges of the recess is forced to revolve therewith. A continued revolution of the parts brings the head 33 of the pawl 31 beneath the flange 28 on the frame 8, retaining the pawl in its depressed position and locking engagement with disk 27, during the complete revolution of the shaft or until the head 33 of pawl 31 again reaches the position for retreat into slot 34, when the spring forces said head outwardly into the slot, and breaks the engagement between collar 30 and disk 27.
During the revolution of the shaft, while the parts are connected as described, the sleeve 29 will be revolved owing to its rigid connection with collar 30, and wheel 45 being rigid on sleeve 29 is also revolved. When the parts are lockedtogether by the means disclosed, as the wheel 45 is revolved, the rail 44 is brought around engaging the offset 37 on the head of bar 36,
arm, thereby moving the nose 23 away from the coin, which it, .together with the nose 39 of bar 36 has been supporting, thereby permitting the coin to drop through the coin chute to a suitable till.
After the release of the coin, and the forward movement of bar 36, the parts are again in normal position when the shaft 9 may revolve idly until the introduction of another coin.
I have illustrated a coin chute and distributing means which may be used in connection with the device of't'his kind, but which does not form part of the present application. This chute comprises two lower branches 50 and 51, separated by a slide 49 carried by an arm 55 rigidly secured to an upright shaft 53 by a set screw 54. On shaft 53 is secured by means of set screw 56, a second arm 57, having a step 58 yieldingly held in contact with an inclined lug 59 on the wheel 45 by means of a spring 60.
Should a smooth coin, or one too small to be caught by the inwardly projecting noses on arm 22 and bar 36 be inserted in the coin chute, it will drop against the slide 49 and be returned outside through slot 50, but when the proper coin is inserted and the parts before described, caused to revolve, the lug 59 on wheel 45 will be carried from under step 58 and said step be forced inwardly into contact with the face of wheel 45, carrying arm 55 around until slide 49 has uncovered branch 51, so that the coin will pass through said branch into the till. As wheel 45 completes its revolution, lug 59 again raises step 58, and the slide again is swung around by the revolution of shaft 53 and gains-its former position where it forms a bottom for branch 50, and a closure for branch 51.

For the puipose of illustrating a convenient mode for connecting the parts described with a machine, I have shown sleeve 29 as carrying a cam 66, having an irregular paththerein, in which a suitable follower may travel, although any suitable device may be provided for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sliding bar, a reciprocatory pitman having an arm member adapted to coiiperate with said sliding bar, upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, and means controlled by said shaft for engaging said bar, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sliding bar, a pitman having a part adapted to engage said bar upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a revoluble shaft, a cam carried by said shaft, and fingers on said pitman, adapted for engagement with said cam, substantially as set forth,
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sliding bar, a pitman having a part adapted to engage said bar upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a wheel carried by said shaft and a rail on said wheel adapted to engage said sliding bar, for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pitman, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a sliding bar having a rear offset head, and means on said shaft for engaging said head, said pitman having a part adapted to engage the sliding bar upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pitman, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a sliding bar, loose sleeve on said shaft, means on said sleeve and said shaft for forming a working unity therebetween, a sliding bar adapted to be actuated by said pitman upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin and adapted for engagement with said unit forming means, and a rail carried by said sleeve and adapted for engagement with said bar, for the purpose set forth.
G. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pitman, a revoluble Shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a clutch member on said shaft, a sleeve revolubly mounted on said shaft, a clutch member movably mounted on said sleeve, a sliding bar adapted for actuation by said pitman upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a head on said bar adapted to move the sleeve clutch member into engagement with the shaft clutch member upon the actuation of said bar, and means on said sleeve for retaining said bar in a desired position during a partial revolution of the shaft.
7. In a device of the class described, a pitman, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, mounted on said shaft, a clutch member movably mounted on said sleeve, a sliding bar adapted for actuation by said pitman upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a head on said bar adapted for impingement with the movable clutch member, a rail carried by said sleeve and adapted to be moved into engagement with said head to retain said head in a desired position during a partial revolution of said shaft, and means for retracting said bar, for the purpose set forth.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pitman, a revoluble shaft, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a clutch member rigid on said shaft, a sleeve loosely mounted on said shaft, a clutch member movably mounted on said sleeve, a sliding bar adapted for actuation by said pitman upon the insertion therebetween of a suitable coin, a head on said bar adapted for impingement against said movable clutch member, a wheel rigid on said sleeve, and a rail on said wheel adapted to engage said head to retain same in a desired position during a partial revolution of the shaft, for the purpose set forth.
9. In a device of the class described, a suitable frame, a pitman carried by said frame, a revoluble shaft journaled in said frame, a disk rigid on said shaft, a circular flange on said frame concentric with said shaft and having a peripheral slot therein, a clutch member rigid on said shaft, a sleeve loose on said shaft, a spring pressed clutch-member pivoted on said sleeve and having a head projecting outwardly into the slot in said flange, a sliding bar adapted for actuation by said pitman and for impingement against said clutch member head upon the insertion of a suitable coin between the pitman and the bar, and a rail on said sleeve adapted to engage said sliding bar for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the class described, a suitable frame, a pitman carried in said frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, means on said shaft for actuating said pitman, a disk rigid on said shaft, a circular peripherally slotted flange on said frame surrounding said disk, a sleeve loose on said shaft, a clutch member pivoted on said sleeve and having a head yieldingly projected through the slot in said flange, a sliding bar adapted for actuation by said pitman upon the insertion of a suitable coin therebetween, a head on said bar adapted to engage the head on said pivoted clutch, a wheel on said sleeve, a rail on said wheel adapted for engagement with said bar head to retain the bar in the desired position while said shaft is carried through a partial revolution, and means for retracting said bar after it has been released from said rail, for the purpose set forth.
11. In a device of the Character described, the combination of a revoluble shaft, a rotary member, a reciprocatory member actuated by said shaft, a sliding member adapted to be actuated by said reciprocatory member upon the in sertion of a suitable coin therebetween and a clutch mechanism carried partly by said shaft and by said rotary member and adapted to be actuated by said sliding member.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a revoluble shaft, a rotary member, a reciprocatory member actuated by said shaft, a sliding member adapted to be actuated by said reciprocatory member upon the in sertion of a suitable coin therebetween, a clutch mechanism carried partly by said shaft and partly by said rotary member and adapted to be moved into the operative posi-. tion by said sliding member, and means for holding the clutch mechanism in the operative position during one revolution of the shaft.
