COMBINED DRAWER-HECTOR AND LOCK FOR CASH-REGISTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,062, dated February 6, 18951.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. BROWN and PERLEY G. WELTY, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in a Combined Drawe and Lock for Cash-Registers; and wedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,whieh form part of this specification.
Our invention is a novel combined lock and ejecting device for drawers, especially designed for use on cash registers and similar machines.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a positively acting ejector, which will not be affected by changes in temperature, or by long use, and will act uniformly, can be taken apart by unskilled parties without special tools, is located above the drawer and does not embody any compression or expansion springs to propel the drawer.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved lock for the drawer, and yet another important object is to combine the ejector and drawer lock in one as hereinafter described.
Our invention therefore consists in the novel combinations and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a register showing the combined ejector and lock, with drawer closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the drawer being opened. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the devices shown in Fig. 1,the weight being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 4. is a rear elevation of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detail.
In the drawings we have represented the invention as applied to a cash register such as is shown in Letters Patent granted to Charles F. Brown, No. 481,524., patented August 23, 1892, but of course the invention is applicable to other registers and we do not confine ourselves to the application thereof to cash registers of any description.
A represents the drawer casing; B, the drawer of any suitable construction.
C is an angular lever pivoted at its bend upon a stud A on the top of the drawer, in suitable position, as shown being near the back end thereof. The lower arm c of lever C depends into the drawer space, through a longitudinal slot a in the casing top, and can swing longitudinally of the casing through said slot. The upper arm O of the lever car-- ries a weight C2 which is preferably made separate from the arm C and is adjustably secured thereto by a slot and set screw as shown in the drawings. The lower arm c when the drawer is closed is forced back by the drawer, and consequently the upper arm is raised elevating the weight, as indicated in Fig. 1, but as soon as the drawer is released, the weight causes lever O to rock, so that its lower arm c swings forwardly, and in so doing forces the drawer open, as indicated in Fig. 2. The lower end of arm c of lever C is bifurcated as shown, the rear arm c2 of the bifurcation being longer than the front arm c3 thereof.
The drawer is provided with a lug b, preferably having a friction roller b, which, as the drawer closes, strikes arm c2 of lever O and forces it backward, and as the lever moves backward with the drawer the roller or stud passes between arms c2, c3, the latter gradually assuming a position in front of the roller, so that when the drawer is fully closed as shown in Fig. l, the roller and lever are interloeked, and the drawer cannot move either forward or backward without rocking the lever, or vice versa, and consequently if the lever be locked when inthe position shown in Fig. l, the drawer cannot open. Te have provided a dogging device for locking the lever in this position, and thus have made the drawer ejector the drawer lock, combining them in one simple and effective device. lVhen the lever is released however, arm c2 pushes the drawer open. The roller b is used to lessen friction and noise.
The lever C is locked by means of a bolt D playing through a block cl secured to the top of the casing beside slot a so that the bolt extends over the slot when projected. The rear end of the bolt is connected to the short arm e of a cranked lever E pivoted on a stud A2 on top of the case, and the longer arm c of said lever overlies an arm la on a plate K having arms K K by which it is hinged on a rod J4 secured to ears on the top of the casing. A bell crank lever J is pivoted at its bend on this rod, and one arm of this lever underlies plate K, and the other arm is connected to a longitudinally movable pull strap l which underlies a row of keys which are so arranged or connected to the pull strap that when depressed, they will shift the pull strap longitudinally and lift plate K, thereby oscillating lever E to withdraw bolt D, and allowing lever C to be rocked by the weight, and the drawer be thereby thrown open, and interlocked during its forward movement. The bolt is kept retracted until the drawer is closed by an arrangement of devices by which plate K is upheld; these devices consisting of a bolt M playing in a block lm., and thrown forward bya spring M so as to underlie lever .l when it is pulled forward to raise plate K. The boltM has a pin or arm M3 depending through a slot in the top of casing, and adapted to be struck by a partition or lug inthe drawer so that it will be retracted just after the arm c of lever C has passed in rear of bolt D, and as soon as plate K drops, lever E drops also, projecting bolt D. The arm e of lever E may be weighted or a spring e2 may be employed to depress said arm so as to quickly project bolt D.
If desired a cushioning spring or pad may be employed to arrest the movement of the weighted lever at the proper time to avoid jarring. As shown, we have attached a flat spring G to stud A', the lower end g of said Spring being bent horizontally rearward in position to arrest the downward movement of the weight. The upper end g of the spring lmay be bent in position to arrest the movement of the weighted arm of the lever if desired, but is not necessary.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the weighted lever serves as both drawer lock, and ejector; that it begins to move and partly opens the drawer before its arm ca releases the same, so that the drawer is partly locked even when moving, and should the lever be locked or its movement be arrested, the drawer would be also arrested and locked. Of course the weight acts uniformly in ej ecting the drawer at all times, and by simply adjusting the weight nearer to, or farther from the pivot of the lever the ejecting power of the lever will be increased or diminished. The drawer can also be entirely removed from the casing, and replaced without aifecting the action of the combined ejector and lock.
While we have shown one device for locking the lever, as employed in connection with a series of keys, yet we do not confine ourselves thereto, as various changes and alterations may be made in such devices by a mechanic, and would have to be in adapting the invention to many forms of registers now in use. Neither do we conne ourselves to the precise form and arrangement of the weighted lever.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
l. The combination of a casing, a drawer, a combined drawer-locking and ejecting lever, and a weight for operating said lever to expel the drawer, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the casing, the drawer, a weighted lever pivoted on the casing and adapt-ed to eject the drawer when released, and a dogging device for locking said lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of a casing, a drawer, a combined drawer-locking and ej ectin glever, and a weight for operating said lever to expel the drawer, with a dogging device for locking said lever, substantially as described.
4. Inacash register the combination of one or more keys to designate amounts, a weighted drawer-ejecting lever, and a locking device directly engaging said lever actuated from said keys, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a cash register the combination of a drawer, a Weighted drawer-locking and ejecting lever, a dogging device for locking said lever, a key and intermediate connections between said key and dogging device, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the casing, the angular lever pivoted thereon having an arm depending into the drawer space and weighted on its upper end; with a drawer adapted to be ejected by said lever when the latter is released, and a locking device, directly engaging said lever substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. The combination of the casing, the drawer, a weightedlever pivoted on the casing and adapted to eject the drawer when released, and a dogging device for locking said lever, and a spring for arresting the move- 4ment of said weighted lever, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the casing, the angular lever pivoted thereon having an arm depending into the drawer space adapted'to engage and lock the drawer, and a weight for oscillating said lever to eject the drawer, with a dogging device for locking the lever, substantially as described.
9. The combination of the casing, the angular lever pivoted thereon having an arm depending into the drawer space and weighted on its upper end, with a drawer adapted to be ejected by said lever when the latter is released, and a locking device for said lever; with a key, and connections between said key and locking device, substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
