Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, ARTHUR B. CLUNIES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
T he present invention relates to gas stoves of the type in which the door to the oven must be opened before the burners can be ignited, so as to prevent explosion of gas c011- fined within. the oven; and it has for an object to provide a construction which in addition to preventing explosions will facilitate the opening of the oven door and not cause the burning of the operators hands.
Another object is to make but one operation necessary to open the oven door and the closure to the burner.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view showing in elevation a portion of a stove embodying my invention; Fig 2 is a central vertical sec-- tion through the same stove on the line a-a of Fig 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the burner chamber on the line bl) of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section similar to Fig. 2 showing the burner closure in partly open position; Fig 5 is a like section showing the closure in complete open osition; and Fig 6 is a front view of the burner closure in open position, the bearings for the closure and the burners being shown in section on line c-c of Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the stove casing divided by a removable hollow partition 2 that rests on supports 3, into an oven 4 and a burner chamber 5. The oven is closed by a door or closure 6 preferably hinged at 7 to turn about a vertical axis and held in a closed position by a suitable fastening device preferably comprising a beveled lug 8 extending from the door and a notched keeper 8* on the casing.
Arranged within the burner chamber is one or more burners 9 which are controlled by valves 10 positioned exteriorly of the stove and connected to a supply pipe 11 O preferably supported on the front of the stove. A portion of the bottom of the burner chamber may be cut to provide an opening 11 through which the burners may be reached,- this opening being arranged between the two burners and the front wall of the stove casing may also be cut away to form a continuation of the opening. The opening and the continuation thereof are closed bya closure 11 which preferably carries outwardly extending trunnions 12 at its rear. These trunnions slide and turn in laterally enlarged bearings 13 hung from the bottom and not only permitting the swinging of the closure but a movement of the latter forwardly.
This forward movement is provided in order that a. downwardly extending hook 14 on an angularly arranged extension 15 on the closure may engage the inner face of the front wall of the casing 1 after being passed through the opening 16.
When the fastening device thus provided is in locked position, the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 2. To unlock the burner closure, the handle 17 thereon is grasped and the forward end of the closure slightly elevated to lift the fastener 14 from engagement with the inner wall of the casing. A slight forward pull is now given to withdraw the fastener from the opening 16, the loose hinging of the closure permitting this movement. The closure may now be dropped.
In order that the opening of one closure may effect the opening of the other, I provide a device which is preferably controlled by the closure for the burner and effects the opening of the oven closure. This device is in this instance in the form of a wedge shaped extension 18 projecting upwardly from the angularly arranged extension 15 on the burner closure and lying, when the latter is in closed position, closely against the front wall of the casing with its upper end arranged between the oven closure and the casing.
When it is desired to ignite the burners, the handle is elevated, as before described, before exposing the burners. This causes the wedge to elevate the door slightly so that it becomes unlocked and is opened before the burners can be ignited, thus preventing an explosion with the door closed due to the premature turning on of the gas. The burner closure is now opened, in the manner before stated, and the burners ignited. After the ignition and before closing the oven door, t e burner closure should be moved to closed position, the lugs 19, on opposite sides thereof, serving to guide it. The condition of the burners may be ascertained by means of peep-holes 20.
A gas stove constructed in accordance with this invention is simple in operation and inexpensive to manufacture. It prevents all explosions due to careless handling of the stove and it provides for the opening of the oven door and the burner closure by one operation. The opening being arranged between the two burners the lighting may beeffected directly instead of depending on the collection of gas in channels or the use of a pilot or lighting burner to direct the flame to the burners.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven and a door therefor, of a burner, a closure for the burner o erable from the exterior of the oven, and a evice disconnected with the oven door and controlled by the burner closure for opening the door of the oven.
2. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a, door, a chamber arran ed beneath the oven, and a burner arranged in the,
chamber, of a closure for the burner chamber operable from they exterior of the oven, having a device thereon disconnected with and cooperating with the door of the oven to open it.
3. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, a chamber arranged beneath the oven, and burners arranged in the chamber, of a closure for the burner chamber operable from the exterior of the oven and having a device thereon arranged between I the door and the oven wall.
4. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, a chamber arranged beneath the oven and a burner arranged in the chamber, of a closure for the burner chamber operable from the exterior of the oven and having a wedge-shaped device arranged be tween the door and the oven wall.
5. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, of a chamber arranged beneath the oven, and having an opening in its bottom and front wall, a burner arranged in the chamber, a closure for the opening in the burner chamber, hinged to the bottom burner chamber, and a device carried by the upwardly extending portion, arranged between the door and the front wall of the oven.
6. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, of a chamber arranged beneath the oven and having an opening, a burner arranged in the chamber, a closure for the opening in the burner chamber, a device carried by the closure and arranged between the door and the oven wall, and a hinge for the closure permitting the upward movement of the latter to cause the device to open the oven door.
7. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, of a chamber arranged beneath the oven and having an opening in its bottom and front wall, a burner in the chamber, a closure covering the opening therein, having an upward extension, a hinge for the closure embodying laterally enlarged bearings secured to the bottom of the burner chamber and trunnions carried by the closure, a fastening device for the closure carried by the upward extension, and a wedge shaped device projecting upwardly from the upward extension and adapted to lie between the door and the front wall of the oven.
8. In a gas stove, the combination with an oven having a door, a chamber arranged in proximity to the oven, and a burnerarranged, in the chamber, of a closure for the chamber,
a fastening device for the closure, a, hinge for the closure having a movement, to permit the unfastening of the fastening device, and a device operated by the closure on such movement to open the door.
9. The combination with an oven, of a burner chamber beneath the same, containing a pair of burners and having a lighting opening formed in its bottom wall, between the burners, a-nd a closure, for said opening.
10. The combination with an oven, of a burner chamber beneath the same having a,
lighting opening in its front and bottom wall,
a closure for the opening, a fastening devicev for the closure, and a hinged connection between the bottom and closure, having a move-- ment, to permit the unfastening of the closure.
