Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN FAULns, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Oak Park, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bake Ovens, of which the following is a specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to ovens used by bakers, and particularly to the door and illuminating device for such ovens, its object being to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient door which in its operation will be in part controlled by and will operate a clamper for controlling a flue for carrying ofl the vapors escaping from the door when opened, and which will also automatically control the illuminating device.
The invention consists in the structure hereinafter described, and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a detail plan section of the oven taken above the door; Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sections on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the one showing the door closed and the other show ing the door open; Fig. 4 is a detail plan section on the line l4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation of the oven, including the door; Fig. 6 is an inverted plan section of the door casing; Fig. 7 is a detail section of the lamp and its casing; and Fig. 8 is a detail of the same parts, showing the reflector and its mountings.
The front face 10 of the oven is shown as of corrugated sheet-metal, and as covering a wall 11 of masonry.
The front of the oven is represented at 12, and its roof at 13, the roof being covered with sand, as is usual in ovens of this type. i
The door opening is shown as in the front wall of the casing, and is inclosed by a metal casing 15 having flanges 1616 overlapping the front face of the oven, and side walls l718 which extend inwardly and converge, a floor plate 19 and a roof plate 20. The door 21 swings inwardly on horizontal pivots which engage the side walls of the casing, and is controlled by a suitable handle 22, preferably extending outwardly beyond the front face of the oven.
A gas flue 23 is located within the walls of the oven above the door casing, and is connected in any suitable way with an oven flue,
not shown. The flue 23 is provided with an induction port 24 opening through the roof plate of the door casing to receive the gases which may issue from the oven upon the opening of the door. This port 24 is covered by a damper 25 pivoted at 26 adjacent the front of the door casing and swinging downwardly. The damper 25 is provided with backwardly-projecting -lingers 2727 engaged by arms 28 extending upwardly from the door 21, whereby the damper is controlled by the movement of the door, closing and opening with it.
The damper 25 is in the form of a heavy block, and serves as a counterweight for the door, its function as such being to facilitate the opening of the door and to hold it in its open position, as shown in Fig. 3. The finger 27 and arm 28 are so shaped and disposed that when the door is closed the arm is brought to a central position, thereby serving as a lock against the gravity of the damper.
The light for illuminating the oven is shown as a gas burner 29 supplied by a pipe 30, and controlled by a valve 31 actuated by means of a crank arm 32 connected by means of a link 33 with a crank arm 34 attached to one of the door pivots 35, so that the opening and closing of the door will open and close the gas valve, the latter being, as usual, so arranged that the closing of the door will not entirely extinguish the light.
The light is inclosed within a casing 36, which is attached to the door casing and has an opening to the oven. This opening is covered by an inwardly-swinging opaque screen or shield 37 and a laterally-projecting arm 38 which extends into the path of the door 21 whereby the opening of the door will also open the light casing or lantern.
The side walls 17-18 of the door casing are apertured to provide access to the lantern 36, which may be located at either side of the door casing, being so made that it may be set either side up, according to the side of the door upon which it is placed. The shield 37 is, for the same purpose, provided with an additional lateral arm 39 extending in the opposite direction from the arm 38 for the purpose of engagement with the door when the lantern is upon the opposite side thereof from that in which it is shown in the drawings. A plate 40 may be applied to that side of the door casing, as 17, which is not, in the pvpln as constructed, cooperating with the A reflector il is pivotally supported by a bracket 42 formed on the side wall of the light casing or lantern 36, and may be swung into opposite position back of the burner 29, as shown in Fig. 4, or may be turned back: wardly to give access to the burner from without.
I claim as my invention 1; In a bake-oven having a door opening and a gas-flue induction port in front of the door opening, a vertically swinging door for the opening, and a gravity opening damper for the flue-port interlocked with the door to counterbalance it.
