To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADoLPH GANZEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vvestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in screens adapted to be used for windows, doors, verandas and in other places. They are especially designed to be used in screens adapted to inclose verandas, summer houses, and the like. Their objects are, among others, to provide for a simple, strong and durable construction of screens for the purposes mentioned; to dispense with the vertical or upright posts usually employed in the same and which, to a greater or less extent, obscure the View from behind such screens; to render the structure easy to be assembled and placed in position, or taken down; to

make the same adjustable and easily applied to openings of different dimensions; to make the same portable and easily stored or transported, and to provide for the renewal of the wire at small labor and expense.

To these ends my improvements consist of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is an inside view of a screen and the parts for securing the same, showing the said screen applied to a corner or bend of a veranda, or the like. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1 with certain parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

The netting 1 of the screen is secured to top and bottom strips 2 and 3 by means of suitable battens 21. It is secured to the outer side of the bottom strip or rail and passed over the upper strip and secured to its inner side.

The bottom horizontal strip 2 is detachably secured to the floor or other horizontal part of the building by means of a clamp consisting of a socket 15 set into the said floor and having a central internally threaded aperture to receive the screw bolt 14, which passes through the plate 16 on the upper side of said strip, through the strip and into the said threaded aperture. The socket 15 and plate 16 are secured to the floor and bottom strip respectively by nails,

screws or other suitable means. In this manner the bottom strip is securely and removably secured.

The top rail or strip 3 is secured to the ceiling or other adjacent part by means of a socket 5, similar in construction to the socket 15 and attached to the said part in substantially the same manner. A plate 6, similar to the plate 16 is secured to the underside of the top strip opposite the socket 5 and a screw bolt 1 provided with a thumb-hold on its lower end passes through the plate 6, the strip 3 and into a threaded central aperture in the socket 5 to secure the said upper strip in position. A fixed strip 11 parallel with strip 21 insures a tight joint.

By securing the upper strips to the ceil ing, or other adjacent part, by means of thumb screws, the vertical adjustment of the same is provided for and this enables the person applying the screens to stretch the same in order to take up the slack or remove wrinkles therein. It also ai fords a quick and eiiective means of adjusting the screen for the purpose of compensating for the swelling or shrinking of the wood to which they are secured.

The vertical edges of the screen widths are secured by means of clips or fasteners 9, which are passed through the said edges, where they overlap, and small mortises 22 are provided in the bottom strips to accommodate the double thickness of the screen at these parts.

Where is it necessary to extend the screens around a corner, I provide upright angleposts 23, with a triangular strip 12 adapted to fit into the angle of the same and to be adjustably and removably secured thereto by means of a screw-bolt 13 passing horizontally therethrough. Any desired number of these screw-bolts may be employed, but I prefer to use about the same number of them as of the clips 9 and to have them located on a horizontal line with said clips, so that the tension caused by the said bolts will not draw in the edges of the screen widths between the clips. The bolts pass through the vertical corner strip and post and are secured by having their outer threaded ends received in a threaded aperture of a cleat 17 The vertical strip 12 is provided with prongs 18 projecting horizontally therefrom and adapted to engage the meshes of the screen by passing therethrough into the beveled slots 20. This arrangement not only secures the vertical edges of the screen widths at the corners but also provi les for a limited horizontal stretching of the same, as the prongs 18 will engage the said screen widths before the strip 12 has been brought into contact with the angular post 23 and when the said strip is further pressed in the direction of the post, a tension will be exerted on said screen widths. It will also be observed that this arrangement dispenses with the necessity for tacking the edges of the screen to the corner post and enables them to be quickly and easily applied thereto or removed therefrom. In order to secure the corner posts in position, I provide small angle brackets 19, which have one arm se cured to the floor or ceiling and the other to the corner post.

What I claim is:

1. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connection between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and means for detachably securing the side edges of the sheets and for moving the same laterally, comprising a strip, a fixed connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a movable connection between the strips.

2. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connection between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and means for detachably securing the side edges of the sheets, comprising a strip, a fiXed connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a movable connection between the strips.

3. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connection between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and means for detachably securing the side edges of the sheets without overlapping, comprising a strip, a connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a connection between the said strips,

The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connection between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and means for detachably securing the side edges of the sheets at an angle to each other without overlapping and for moving the same laterally, comprising a strip, a connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a movable connection between the strips.

5. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connection between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and meansfor detachably securing the side edges of the sheets and for moving the same laterally, comprising a movable strip, project-ions thereon engaging the sheets and forming a connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a movable connection between the strips.

6. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, strips on the horizontal edges thereof, a connect-ion between the upper and lower edges of said screen and adjacent parts of the building provided with means for moving one of said strips vertically without disconnecting it from the building, and means for detachably securing the side edges of the sheets and for moving the same laterally, comprising a movable strip, projections thereon engaging the sheets through the movement of tne strip and forming a connection between said strip and the sheets, a fixed strip and a movable connection between the strips.

7. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets disposed in d fferent planes, horizontal strips to which the upper and lower edges of the sheets are secured, detachable connections between the strips and the building and means not connected with said strips for securing the side edges without overlapping, comprising a strip on the inside of the sheets, a post on the outside and fastenings eX- tending through each of the sheets and connecting the strip and post.

8. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sieets, horizontal abutting strips to which the upper and lower edges of the sheets are secured, detachable connections between the strips and the building and a recess in a strip to which one sheet is connected to receive the edge of an adjacent sheet overlapping the sheet connected thereto, and means not connected with said strips for adjustably and detach- V sheets to be secured together, and a vertical strip detached from the horizontal str1ps for securing one or more of the vertical edges of the sheets, extensible connections between said vertical strip and the building, and a portion of said strip adapted to engage the sheets while the said connections are in an extended position.

10. In a veranda screen, the combination of a plurality of sheets of netting, strips secured to the horizontal edges of each sheet and connected with the building, said strips constructed and arranged to permit the ver tical edges of the sheets to be secured together and a vertical strip detached from the horizontal strips for securing one or more of the vertical edges of the sheets, extensible connections between said vertical strip and the building, and a portion of said strip adapted to engage the sheets while the said connections are in an extended position.

11. In a veranda screen, the combination of plurality of sheets of netting, strips secured to the horizontal edges of each sheet, and connected with the building, said strips constructed and arranged to permit the vertical edges of the sheets to overlap and be secured and a vertical strip detached from the horizontal strips for securing one or more of the vertical edges of the sheets, extensible connections between said vertical strip and the building, and a portion of said strip adapted to engage the sheets while said connections are in an extended position, and fastening devices passing through the overlapping edges of the sheets.

12. The combination of a plurality of screen wid hs, an adjustable connection between one of their horizontal edges and an adjacent part of the building, fasteners adapted to be passed through the vertical edges of said screen widths, after overlapping, and means for securing other disconnected vertical edges without overlapping and for causing horizontal tension on the said screen widths.

13. The combination of a screen proper composed of a plurality of sheets, a connec tion between its horizontal edges and the building, one of said securing means being adjustable, and means detached from the connections for the other edges for securing its vertical edges, comprising a fixed vertical post, a strip movably attached thereto and separate detachable connections between said movable strip and sheets of the screen.

14. As a new article of manufacture, a veranda screen comprising a plurality of sheets of netting, strips secured to the upper and lower horizontal edges of said sheets, detachable connections for securing the same to fixed parts of the building, fastenings for the vertical edges of sheets disposed in the same plane, and fastenings disconnected from the horizontal edges for the vertical adjacent edges of sheets disposed at an angle toceach other including an angular piece extending over the edges of said sheets on one side and another piece extending over said edges on the opposite side and means for connecting the said sheets thereto engaging the netting of each sheet.

15. A screen for verandas and the like comprising in its construction a plurality of sheets of netting composing the screen proper, strips secured to the horizontal edges of each sheet and connections between the said strips and the building, one of said connections being adjustable, fastenings for the vertical edges of sheets disposed in the same plane and other fastenings for the like adjacent edges of sheets disposed in difierent vertical planes, the latter including a fixed angular corner post having portions extending over said edges on one side and a detachable strip extending over the opposite sides and a connection between each sheet and the removable strip.

16. In a screen for verandas and the like, a plurality of sheets of netting disposed in different planes composing the screen proper, strips secured to the horizontal edges of the sheets and detachable connections between said strips and the building, fastenings for the vertical edges of said sheets comprising a fixed angular corner post having portions extending over the edges of each abutting sheet on one side and a detachable strip on the opposite side and connections between the said sheets and the detachable strip engaging with the portions of the corner post which extend over the sheet edges.
