Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed September 6, 1905. Serial No. 277,227-
To nil/I who/11, 7'i ma) concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE WAs nNo'roN THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yosemite in the county of Casey and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful on'ibined Post and Wire-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined posts and wire-stretchcrs, and has for an object'to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of simplicity, durability, utility, and efliciency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a post having staples, hooks, or lugs to engage the wires and a notched stretchingstrip to loop the wire between the lugs, books, or staples so as to take up and hold the sleek.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the wire after being looped may be secured to the post and the stretchingstrip removed, if desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the stretching-strip may be removed and the post employed in association with boards to construct a board fence.
A further object of the invention is to provide a post which may be used for constructing a picket fence or in association with any form of fabric or ornamental fencing.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a post which may be secured and used in combination with any approved form of base, such as concrete, terra-cotta, metal, or the iike.
With these and other objects in view the prose nt invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinni'ter fully described,-shown in the accompanying dra-win s, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made without depe' from the spirit or sacrificing any of the .tdvantages of this invention.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fence embodying the invention. a {perspective view of" the reverse or side the post. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the post. Fig. i is a top pian view of the post. Fig. 5 is a view of the L hing-scrip in side elevation. Fig. 6 is a c view of the post member of the associated in a board. fence. Fig.
7 is a perspective view of a modified form of ostl i p Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In its preferred embodiment the invention forming the subject-matter of this application comprises a P0511) member composediof the front late 10, the back brace 11', provided witht 1e openings 12, and of any approved length to be embedded or secured'in any spproved manner in or upon a base of any desired shape and material and shown conventionally at 13 and the post shown in Fig. 2 as broken to indicate that the lower end'mey be of any added length andform.
Upon the edges of the front phi te are the step es or hooked ln s 14, arranged in pairs alined transversely 0% the post, and somewhat above each pair of lugs and adjacent the vertical middle of the plate 10 are formed holes 15. At the upper end of the post a flange 16 is disposed outstanding in front of the plate 10, said flan e being provided with an opening 17. Throu theo enin 17is inserted then g g g P per screw-threade end of the stretching-strip 18, havingnotches 19 formed along one edge in positionto engage the wires 20 and having a. nut 21 upon the screw-threaded ortion and bearing upon the flange 16. ter the wires 20 between the hooks, staples,-or lugs 14 are engaged within the notches 19 the not 21 is tightened, drawing the strip and wires t0 the positions shown on the left-hand est in Fig. 1, when the stretcher-strip will old the wire taut and be in position to com ensate for any expansion or contraction o the wires.
Attention is called to the fact that the side of the post between the wire-engeging lugs is fist and unobstructed, thereby forming a bearing-surface for the fence-wires and also for the vertically-movable stretching-strip,
while the notches l9} being formed in the in- In practice it may be found nnnecessari to have the strips 18 on every post, in whio IOC zpost by the wires with the uppeiw the lugs for stretching said wires longitudi null 61"- the post, and means for locking the For use in association with fabric or ornn- .mental fencing the holes 12 in the hrnee-rih 11 may be used, as by passing wires through the said holes or tying therein. may he made of metal, wood, or any desired material.
The post From the foregoing description it is he- I lieved the use, operation, and advantages of the improved pest and wire-stretcher will he full understood and appreciated.
I aving thus described the inventioinniint is claimed is-- -1. Afence-post comp ising a standard having one side thereof formed with a flat hearing surface rovidcd with spaced downwardly-exten ing wire-engaging lugs, n vertically-adjustable stretching strip movnhle over the flat bearing-surface of the post and having its inner face provided with spaced notches adapted to engage the wires between stretching-strip in adjusted position.
2. Atence-post comprising a standard having one side thereof formed with u lint heuring-snrt'uee and one end with u laternltv-projeeting tlnnge provided with :1 threaded opening, there being spneed don'rnvnrdly-extending wire-engaging lugs formed on the opposite longitudinal edges ol the lhit side of thd post, :1 vertienllyudjustnhle stretehing-strip !no\' ahle over the tint henring-surlnee oi the post and having one end thereof threaded for engngenn-nt with the opening in the llnnge and. its inner face provided with :1 series of spaced notehes adopted to engage the wires hetween the lugs, and at nut threaded on the strip nnd engaging the Henge for loekingthe stretchingstrip in adjusted position in testimony that 1 claim the foregoing us my own i have hereto niiixed my signature in the. presence of two witnesses.
