Description

R. L. KIRK. COMBINED GORNER BRAGE AND HINGE FOR SCREENS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 23, 1911.
Patented June 13,1911.

fltl'omego I M nan ms Per-mes cov, vusmuamu, n. c.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. KIRK, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
COMBINED CORNER-BRACE AND HINGE FOR SCREENS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. KIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined CornenBraces and Hinges for Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combined corner braces and hinges for window screens and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a combined corner brace and hinge of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eflicient and reliable in operation and which may be readily applied to the corner of a screen frame or the like, and secured to the window frame in position to support the screen whereby the latter may be readily swung upwardly or downwardly when opened or closed.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. 7
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a window frame and screen showing the application of my improved corner brace and hinge thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the combined hinge and brace; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
My improved combined corner brace and hinge comprises a right angularly formed brace member 1 comprising integrally formed horizontal and vertically disposed plates 2 and 3, said plates having formed therein a plurality of screw holes 4; adapted to receive fastening screws or similar devices whereby the brace is attached to the corner of a screen frame. In the plates 2 and 3 are also preferably formed slots or elongated apertures 5, through which brads or Specification of Letters Patent.

nails may be driven for fastening the molding onto the screen frame. The plate 2 is preferably corrugated longitudinally adjacent to its opposite side edges as shown at 6 and on the upper edge of said plate is formed an inwardly projecting bracing flange 7 which is adapted to fit over and engage the upper edge of the top piece of the screen frame whereby the brace is held in place. The outer end of the upper plate 2 of the brace is extended beyond the vertical plate 3 and said extended end of the plate 2 has formed thereon one member 8 of a hinge, the other member 9 of which is adapted to be secured to the adjacent portion of a window frame or other support whereby the screen is hingedly supported. By hingedly supporting the screen in the manner described the same may be readily swung up or down to open and closed positions and it will be seen that the hinge may be employed for supporting screens of any desired size, or in other words, full length or half length screens may be supported to equal advantage by the hinges. By corrugating the upper plate of the brace and forming the flange 7 thereon, said plate will be made rigid and together with the plate 3 will form a strong, durable corner brace for holding the upper corners of the screen firmly together.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
As an article of manufacture the herein described combined corner brace and hinge for window screens, comprising an angular shaped plate, a flange forming a continuation of one of the arms of said plate and disposed substantially at right angles thereto,
an extension forming a continuation of the my hand in presence of two subscribing Witplate beyond the flanged portion thereof nesses.
and a pivoted hinged member secured to said extension whereby the hinge thus [ROBERT KIRK 5 formed is arranged on a line with said Vitnesses:
flange. D. J. PATRICK, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set A. M. FARMER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
