WMKM
r rron v5) STEPHEN H. ALLISON, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
BOOK-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed March 27, 1905. Serial No. 252,263.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. ALLISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Berkeley, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful BooleLock-s, of which .the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an interchangeable book-lock for locking books of various sizes.
I accomplish my object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my lock in operative position on a book; Fig. 2, a perspective view of my lock looking in a direction opposite to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a side view in elevation; Fig. 4 a front view; Fig. 5 a vertical sectional view along the line a" Fig. 3; Fig 6 a perspective view of a modified form of tenant described below.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In general terms my invention consists of means for claspin'g the outside covers of books of various sizes, and of locking the clasping means; and in addition thereto, of a tenant, or flexible tongue adapted to be held between the leaves of a book locked by my device, whereby any additional pressure exerted upon the book in order to loosen it from the clasping means, will be received upon said tenant, and the book prevented from being withdrawn.
Explaining my device in detail, and referring to the drawings filed herewith, 1 is the upper plate of my lock, and 2 the lower plate. Plate 1 carries a pair of legs 3 and 4, having notches 5, 6, cut therein. Plate 2 carries a casing 7 provided with apertures 8 and 9 into which legs 3 and 4 are slidable. Casing 7 contains a pair of dogs 10, 11, pivoted therein, and said dogs are actuated Improvements in by spring 12 to engage notches 5, 6. Said engagement may be released by a key in serted in keyhole 13. The tongue or tenant 14 is made of flexible material attached to the casing as at 15.
A modified form of tenant is shown in Fig. 6. In this form the tenant has, besides the part that goes between the bookleaves, legs or extensions which engage legs 3 and 4.
To operate my device tenant 14 or 16 as the case may be, is inserted between the leaves of a book to be locked; placing the covers of said book between plates 1 and 2 and exerting compressing force on said plates. The dogs 10, and 11 thereupon engage legs 3 and 4 by their notches 5, 6, whereby said covers are held in a compressed state under lock. Tenant aforesaid is squeezed tightly between the leaves, and any further pressure on the book to disengage it from plates 1 and 2 would only hold the tenant the tighter. Moreover, if by any means other than unlocking, my device is slipped off the book, the flexible character of tenant prevents its being replaced with the lock, and the fact that the book has been tampered with is exposed.
I claim:
1. In an interchangeable book-lock, the combination with a pair of lock-plates of a flexible tongue attached thereto at a point intermediate their opposing surfaces.
2. In an interchangeable book-lock, means for preventing withdrawal of said lock com- 'prising a flexible tongue attached thereto,
arranged to enter between the leaves of a book to be locked.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEi H. ALLISON. Witnesses:
