lIIlIiIIl u gA g I I-IIV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE R. POPE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CASING FOR VENDING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE R. Porn, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Casings for Vending- Machines, of which the following is a specification. f
The main object of this invention is to provide animproved and inexpensive construction for vending machine casings whereby the greater part of the walls of the easing may be const ,ucted of glass, so as to disclose the contents-from all sides, even when a plurality of such casings are placed side by side and one upon the other. This object is accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vending machine casing constructed according to this invention, some of the interior mechanism being also shown to illustrate the clearness with' which the contents may be seen through the glass walls of the casing. Fig. 2' is a sectional detail showing the method of attaching the coin chute and escutcheon cover-,
ing the coin slot. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a front View of the coin-slot escutcheon. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail showing the construction of the rear wall of the casing adjacent to its corners. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section of the casing. Fig. 7 is a section of the same on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the bottom 1, top 2 and side walls 3 consist of retangular plates of glass. These are placed together at right angles to one another, with a strip of felt 4c, or other soft packin material, interposed where their edges a ut against ,each other. The front 5 is in the form of a/metal cap having flanges 6 extending around the adjacent edges of the top, bottom and side walls and having lugs 7 (Fig. 3) bearing against theinner faces of the adjacent walls to confine them against the flanges G. The middle part of the front 5 is provided with a glass pandl 8. There is an opening 9 in the front wall of the casing,
through which the article delivery chute 10 of the vending machine extends. The glass panel 8 is confined at its edges between shoulders 11 and is secured in position by means of clips 12. The rear wall of the easing is also in th form f a cap comprising an outer frame 13 ha ing flanges l4: sur- Specification of Letters Patent.

rounding the adjacent edges of the walls of the casing. The middle part of the frame is provided with an opening large enough to permit all of the contents of the casing to be removed therethrough. This opening has a closure, preferably in the form of a removable panel, comprising a frame 15 surrounding a glass plate 16, the plate 16 being secured in position in its frame by means of shoulders abutting against its edges and clips 17. The frame 15 is provided with lugs 19 at its' upper edge, which are adapted to overlap the inner face of the frame 13. At the lower edge of the frame 15 is a lock 20 provided with a movable tongue 21 which bears against the inner face of the frame 13 and thereby prevents the removal of the frame 15. The frame 15'is provided with an inwardly extending flange 22 which closely fits the edges of the opening in the frame 13 tend through the front 5 of the casing, so
that they cannot be rotated from the outside. The rearward ends of the rods 23 are threaded and engage nuts 24: which have enlarged heads bearing against the rearward face of the frame The frame 15 is provided With an ear 18 at each of its corners, which ears extend outward so as to cover the nuts 24 and prevent the same from being removed when the door frame 15 is in position. All of the edges of the glass panels which abut against one another or against the end frames 5 and 13 are protected by a layer of felt at, so as to render the joints tight and at the same time protect the glass from becoming chipped.
I claim:
1. A casing of the class described, comprising a top, a pair of sides, a bottom, and a pair of opposite end caps, said top and sides being of glass, flanges on said caps' adapted to mclose the ad acent ends of said top and sides, shoulders on said caps engaging the inner faces of said top and sides, and a plurality of tie rods connecting said caps.
2. A! casing of the class described, com-- for the opposite ends of said casing, each having'a flange extending around its edges and inclosing adjacent edges of said glass plates, means for preventing said .plates from shifting inward away from the flanges, and a plurality of tie rods extending between said caps for securing them in position on the casing.
3. A casing of theclass described, comprising four glass plates placed at right angles to one another and with their edges abutting to form a substantially rectangular casing; and a pair of caps serving as closures for the opposite ends of said casing, each having a flange extending around its edges and inclosing adjacent edges of said glass plates, means for preventing said plates from shifting inward away from the flanges, a
plurality of tie rods extending between said caps for securing them in position on the casing, one of said caps comprisingan open WVitnesses:
