Description
, D.'J. BRADY.
Whiffletree Coupling. No. 90,989. Patented June 8, 1869- I fiz/vhzvr 7027065660" g r Mam A ifiititrd $21125 DAVID J.BRADY, (5F GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, OHIO.
Letters-Patent No. 90,989, dated June 8, 1869.
HEPROVEMEN'I IN COUPLING-S FOR WHIFILETREES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID J. BRADY, of Greenwich township, Huron county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Compound ()levis; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p l
My invention relates to couplings for the double and single-trees of carriages and other vehicles; and It consists of a compound clevis, constructed and arranged with reference to the double and single-frees, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the drawings, is the body of my compound clevis.
It is made of iron, or of any suitable material, and is formed by unitingtwo single clevises, as shown at A in the drawings.
B and G are bolts, which pass through openings in the rear and front arms of the clevis, near their outer extremities.
B and C are screw-nuts, by means of which the bolts B and O are secured in position.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Having passed the bolt 0 through the end of the upper rear arm of the compound clevis into and through a suitable vertical opening in the double-tree, and finally through the lower rear arm of the clevis, secure it in position by means of the screw-nut C.
In like manner, the bolt B is passed through the upper front arm of the clevis, thence through a vertical opening in the centre of the single-tree, and into and through the lower front arm, where it is secured in the same way as bolt 0.
The remaining single-tree is adjusted, with reference to the double-tree, as the one just described.
When this is accomplished, the double and singletrees will have become connected together, and the usefulness of my invention will be apparent as soon as the draught is applied. v
From the foregoing. description, it is evident that the singletrees are brought forward and elevated. so as to bring the draught upon the double-trees in nearly a direct line; that the strain which is usually exerted upon the bearings of the single and doubletrees is, to a great extent, avoided; that it is' very cheap in its construction, and highly ornamental.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
A compound clevis, when used foruniting double and sin gle-trees, constructed substantially as has been shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of three subscribing witnesses. l
DAVID J. BRADY.
