Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORATIO L. PEIROE, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RING FOR SPINNING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 90,956, dated J une 8, 1869.
To whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HoRA'rro L. Inmcn, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Rings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention essentially consists in steellining that part of a spinning-rin g upon which the traveler runs, or upon which it wears most, as hereinafter described, and it is equally applicable to the manufacture of new rings and to the repairing of o ld ones.
Ordinary spinning-rings made of ease-hardened iron are very defective for many reasons. They are soft and will soon become worn, and their temper cannot be depended on, as they wear unevenly and become rough. Owing to this, the thread is liable to break, and not only is there a waste of yarn, but the travelers are also injuriously affected. In fact, it is of little avail that the machine and frame are made perfect, so long as the ring andtraveler are not adapted for the work.
When there is a rough or imperfect ring, a lighter traveler must be employed than would be necessary were the ring smooth and true; and in case of a light traveler with an ordinary ring, although the draft may be right when the bobbin is empty, yet as the bobbin fills the draft decreases, thus allowing the yarn to kink and to produce a soft bobbin.
The object I have in view, in the invention above named, is to obviate these and like defects.
In carrying my invention into effect, I proceed as follows: I turn out or otherwise form a groove, a, in the spinning-ring A, -:t the point where, ordinarily, the inside flange of the ring or race is formed. I then take a steel wire, b, of round, iiat, or other required form, and shape the ends so that they will fit or dovetail together; and then, having heated the spinning-ring, spring the steel hoop or ring into the groove b, so as to form the inside flange of the race, as shown in perspective, Figure l, and in section, Fig. 2, after which the two are to be soldered together. lThe ring thus formed is then hardened.
and true the outer ilange remains intact. It
will be seen that this is provided for in my improved ring by the arrangement of the steel ring b.
Third, as the flange remains smooth and true, the travelerruns with greater ease. There is no waste of yarn, and need be no variation in the weight of the traveler.
Fourth, the flange of theri ng can be widened without great expense and with little trouble by taking out the lining and putting in a wider lining whenever desired.
Fifth, the invention is adapted to the repairing of old rings as lwell as to the manufacture of new ones. Instead of throwing away an old ring, it can be made as good or better than a spinning-ring of ordinary make by turning out the inside liange and forming the groove a as above described, after which the steel ring b can be applied, so that in this respect alone, by turning the old rings to accoiint, the invention is exceedingly valuable.
Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spinning-ring having a steel lining constructed and applied substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
HORATIO L. IEIROE.
