Description
A. B. OSTRANDER. GAB END FRAMING. APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1908.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
ALLEN E. OSTRANDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T AMERICAN CAR AND FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A UORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAR-END FRAMING.
Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Applicltlon filed July 26, 1808. Serial No. 445,867.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN E. Osrnnunnn, residing at New York city, count and State, and being a citizen of the nited States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-End Framing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, whic illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the endpost pockets. Fig. 2 is a -transverse sectional view of a car equipped with my im roved end framing. Fig. 3 is a lan view of t e parts of the underframe an appurtenances shown in Fig. 2. Fi 4 is -=a sectional view, the section being ta on on line 44 of Fi 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevations] view of a agmentary portion showing the corner post pocket in position. The object of the invention is to produce an end framing particularly well adapted to resist end thrusts caused by shifting of the load within the car and incidental to this the pockets for the end posts are secured in osition with the major portion thereof beow the upper plane of the end sill with said end sill serving preferably as one of the walls of said pockets when in position so as to ermit placing the end posts and the end rring strps next the end sills in which event the en sheathing will extend vertically above the end sill. As the end furring rises to a, plane above the upper plane of the end sill and the end sheathing is secured to said furring a weather proof lower end construction will result.
Owing to the end posts, end braces and comer posts extending belowthe upper plane of the end sill and the end furring resting on the end post pockets and longitudinal sills, short sections of end furrin may be used as nailing strips for the end s eat and the car flooring, said fur-ring being provided with v a shouldered portion on which the trans versely extending end board of said flooring will rest. Secured in position outside of the side sills and back of the end sill are corner post pockets adapted to receive the corner posts and framing rods.
Referring particularly to the parts, A in dicates a central irder or center sills; it side sills; C an end sil 5 all of which are shown as channel members which may be either roiled or pressed. as may be desired, although i. do not wish to be limited to channel shaped sill members as it is evident that any suitably shaped sills may be combined with the end framing hereinafter more fully described.
Between the center sills at each end thereof are pressed. members 2 which are provided with downwardly extending fiitliges: 3 for riveting to said center sills and an end flange 4 for connection with the end sill. At each side of the center sills are end pest pockets 5 shown in detail in Fig. 1. Salt pockets som prise vertical flange 6, three hwhich rivets are driven for connection to t 10 end sill, and laterall irojecting flanges 7 upon which rest the end? Eur-ring strips 8 which strips are accured in position by means of bolts 9 passing through openings 1U in the flanges Y and through said iurring strips, as shown in Ihe end ost pockets comprise rear walls 11, side wal s 12 and an intermediate filler 13 which letter perforated for the passage therethrough of the end framing rods 14:, and when the ockets 5 are secured in position the end sil 0- serves as a closure for the end post pocket 15 and end brace pocket 16 as shown in Fi 3.
Connects to the side sills B and end sill G are corner 0st ockets 17 which are provided with stem ly extending flanges 18 on which test the side nailing strips 19 and with vertical flanges 20 and 2! respectively for connection with said side sills and end siii as best shown in Fig. 5.
It will be observed that the corner pockets are placed outside or beyond the is sills and in such osition that the side sills serve as closures ermine; the inner walls of said corner post pockets whereby the side posts will rest in position next the side sills.
Resting upon the flanges of the cent)! sills and carried thereby, or By the pre sing 2 interposed between said sills, is a short section for one side of said pockets and tuning rest- 22 of tuning};
extending t erethrough and through said pressing, said lurring extending relatively to the inner faces ol the end post pockets. The F iurring strips 8 rest upon. the flanges 7 of the end post pockets and upon the side sills, said lurring, strips being cut away if necessary, as shown in Fig. 1, to pass over said side sills to which. they are bolted by means of the vertically extending bolts 25.
