HORACE M. ROUNDS, OF COLUMBUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-HANDLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 2, 1908.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
Serial No. 441,662.
full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in the class of tool handles and more particularly to the type employed for cross out saws.
The object of my said invention is to con struot a handle of this type which may be readily attached to and detached from the saw blade and comprising parts which may be readily made and assembled to produce a most complete article of this type of great strength and durability.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention and a full and exact description thereof is contained in the annexed specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved handle attached to a saw. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. 1 with the saw removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device showing the several parts detached.
In the several views like letters of reference designate similar parts of my improved construction.
A in the drawings designates a wooden handle of ordinary type and provided with the longitudinally extending cylindrical recess a, said handle being of smaller diameter at its end a forming the shoulder a said smaller portion of the handle being provided with the flattened portions (1 on opposite sides thereof.
B designates the hollow cylindrical socket portion having its upper half internally threaded and constructed to tightly fit into said recess a, said socket ortion B being provided at its lower end wit the annular flange gladgpted to bear against the end of the hanb b are upwardly extending arms secured at opposite sides of the flange b and adapted to engage the flattened portions of the handle and provided at their ends with inwardly projecting points 6 adapted to be driven into the handle A.
C is a ferrule constructed to tightly fit onto the end of the handle A, incasing the flange b and arms 5 and. holding the points in engagement with the handle A, said casing being provided with the orifice c of equal diameter and registering with the opening of the socket portion B.
I) is a washer provided with the upwardly extending lugs d adapted to be bent over an annular bead c on said ferrule C to retain said washer in position but at the same time permitting it to turn on said ferrule, said washer being provided with an orifice d of corresponding size to and registering with 3' the orifice c.
E is a bolt provided with the slot e into which the saw blade is adapted to be inserted, said blade preferably having a notch f adapted to engage the lower portion of the bolt Said bolt E is of suitable size to fit within the socket B and is provided above its slot with the threaded portion 6 adapted to engage with the internally threaded portion I of said socket l3, whereby the distance between the washer D and the bottom of the the slot e may be decreased to tighten the handle on the blade F.
Having fully described my invention, the operation thereof is obvious and is as follows. After the parts have been assembled as in Fig. 2, the bolt is sufficiently withdrawn from the socket to permit the blade to be insorted in the slot 6, as in Fig. 1, whereupon the handle A is turned so as to draw the bolt E up into the handle, thus decreasing the size of the slot e and consequently tightening the handle on the blade, the turning of the handle being facilitated by the washer D which bears upon the back of the blade and remains stationary while the handle is free to turn.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a handle portion provided with a longitudinally extending recess, of a socket portion interiorly threaded and constructed to fit within said recess and provided with projecting arms adapted to clutch the handle, and a bolt provided with a slot and a threaded portion adapted to engage with said threaded portion of said socket, substantiallyas described.
2. The combination with a handle portion provided with a longitudinally extending recess, of a socket portion interiorly threaded and constructed to fit within said recess and provided with upwardly extending arms hav ing at their ends inwardly turned points adapted to be driven into the handle and a bolt provided with a slot and a threaded portion adapted to engage with said threaded portion of said socket, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a handle portion provided with a longitudinally extending recess, of a socket portion interiorly threaded and constructed to fit within said recess, and provided with upwardly extending arms adapted to clutch the handle a ferrule constructed to tightly fit over the end of said handle portion and upwardly extending arms, and provided with an orifice registering with the opening in said socket portion and a bolt provided with a slot and a threaded portion adapted to engage with said threaded portion of said socket, substantially as de scribed.
4. The combination with a handle portion provided with a longitudinally extending recess, of socket portion interiorly threaded and constructed to fit within said recess and provided with upwardly extending arms adapted to engage flattened portions of the handle and provided with inwardly extending points adapted to be driven into the handle, a ferrule constructed to tightly fit over the end of said handle portion and upwardly extending arms, and provided with an orifice registering with the opening in said socket portion and a bolt provided with a slot and a threaded portion ada ted to engage with said threaded portion 0 said socket substantially as described.
5. The combination with a handle portion provided with a longitudinally extending recess, of a socket portion interiorly threaded and constructed to fit within said recess and provided with projecting arms constructed to clutch the handle, a ferrule constructed to tightly fit over the end of said handle and arms and provided with an orifice registering with the opening in the socket portion, a washer revolubly mounted on said ferrule and provided with an orifice registering with the orifice in said ferrule and a bolt provided with a slot and a threaded ortion adapted to engage with said threaded portion of said socket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
in the presence of two witnesses.
HORACE M. ROUNDS.
