ADJUSTABLE HANDLE-BAR FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,306, dated October 22, 1895.
Application tiled August 7, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB ELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handle-Bars for Bicycles, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my said invention is to provide a convenient, strong, and easily-operated means for rotatively adjusting the steering 0r handle bars of bicycles upon the upper ends of the stems or standards supporting the same.
A structure embodying said invention will be iirst fully described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a front elevation of a fragment of a bicycle stem or standard and the steering or handle bar mounted thereon, the same being constructed and attached together in accordance with my said invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section through the head or part where the construction is located, which immediately involves theinvention,on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the disassembled parts.
Except as will be hereinafter particularly described, these devices are or may be of the usual or any desired construction, the novelty residing especially in the means whereby the handle-bar is adjustably secured in place.
Upon the stem or standard l is secured the usual head 2, which is slitted in the center to receive the clamping-loop 3, and is provided with a shoulder a, on its shank, said shank being secured on the standard 1. The handle-bar 4 is thickened somewhat in its'immediate center, and this thickened central portion has a series of flattened sides, as many as may be desired. The clamping-loop 3 has a corresponding attened side formation on the upper half of its interior surface, while the lower half of said surface is cut away somewhat to permit a space between it and the lower side of the handle-bar. The shank of this clamping-loop 'is flattened on its sides, and its edges are screw-threaded where they Serial No. 558,541. (No model.)
project through the sides of the shank of the head 2, below where the handle-bar passes through said head. A sleeve-nut 5, having an interior flange b, which engages with the shoulder a on the head 2, is, for the remainder of its length, interiorly screw-threaded and engages with the screw-threads on the shank of the clamping-eye 3. As it is heldv from being drawn up by the engagement of its flange b with the shoulder a on the shank of the head 2, the operation, of course, is when said nut is turned up to draw down on the clamping-eye 3, which brings the upper side of its interior surface rmly against the exterior upper surface of the handle-bar 4. These two surfaces having a correspondingly-attened formation of course engage strongly together. The sides or flattenings employed are preferably quite numerous, so that they are individually not Very prominent, and
therefore it only requires a trifling loosening of the nut to permit the clamping-eye to slip upward sufficiently to permit the handle-bar to revolve.
The operation is, when it is desired to shift the angle of the handles, that the nut 5 is backed up slightly, which loosens the clamping-eye 3, the handle-bar 4 is revolved to the point desired, and the nut 5 again tightened, which resecures it firmly in place.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, wit-h the handle-bar of a bicycle, of the head in which it is mounted, said head having a central slit in its upper portion and a shoulder on its shank, a clamping eye mounted in the slit in said head and provided with an exterior-ly screw-threaded shank, and a nut surrounding the shank of the head and provided with a liange which engages with the shoulder thereon and an interior screw-thread which engages with the screw-thread on the shank of the clamping eye, substantially as set forth.
