To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr M. Mnnnow, a citizen of the United States, residing in the 1 city and county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming-Cutters for Sewing-Machines, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description, ref- 1 erence being had to the accompanying l drawings, forming a part of this specification, i and to the figures and letters of reference I thereon.
This invention relates to reversible trim ming cutters provided with guides to guard the cutting edges from undue conflict with the edge of a companion cutter.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a cutter, easily reversible and adjustable, in order to obviate frequent sharp ening.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cutter mounted upon its support or carrier, showing also a portion of a companion cutter. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the cutter and its retaining screw and shows also the companion cutter. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cutter and its carrier or holder as seen from the top of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the carrier or support with the cutter removed. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the cutter. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the cutter as seen from the left of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view of the cutter as seen from the right of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a view of the cutter as seen from below Fig. 5.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference figures and numerals denote the same parts.
The letter A denotes the cutteras a whole,
B the cutter carrier or support, C the companion cutter and D the retaining screw.
The cutter A is usually of steel and is preferably constructed from a rectangular lock having four sides or edges which inclose or bound its two faces. In each of these faces there are preferably two recesses a a and a at, those on each face being diagonally opposed to each other and alternately opposed relatively to the notches of the op posite face.
The effect of the notches a a a a is to produce the four cutting edges (1 a a a and the four fingers or guides a a a a one finger or guide for each of the said cutting edges, and the relative locations of the said notches are such as to provide two of the opposed sides or edges of the block each with two cutting edges with their respective fingers or guides, the cutting edges and the fingers of each side or edge being inverted relatively to each other.
The sides or edges of the block provided with the cutting edges, are adapted to be ground or dressed as a whole in the sharpening of the cutting edges, each side of the block in a single plane, including in such plane two cutting edges and their respective guide fin ers, the grinding operation not changing the form of the cutting edges which latter are preferably made at'an acute angle.
The cutter is adjustably mounted on the carrier or holder B as will be hereinafter explained, and the said carrier is suitably actuated to cause one of the cutting edges a and its guide a to coact with the companion cutter C.
It will be understood that the guide a of the cutting edge 0/ in use, will always be in contact with the side of the comp anion cutter, as best shown in Fig. 2, and that either the cutter A or the companion cutter C will be reciprocatcd up and down a suitable dis tance in a path substantially parallel with the plane of the side of the comp anion cutter C and that the acting side of the cutter A will be in substantially the same plane.
To locate the cutter A and guide the same in its adjustment upon the holder B, the said cutter has across each face a guide-way at, these guide-ways being parallel and extend perpendicular to the ground sides or edges of the cutter A. The said guide-ways a are exactly opposite each other and are made in the form of grooves which it upon a tongue I) at the front face of the carrier or holder B.
The cutter A is provided with a slotted hole a for the retaining screw D so that the cutter may be adjusted laterally of its ground edges to obtain the desired contact between the (paid cutter A and the companion cutter It is thought unnecessary to illustrate any operating mechanism for the cutters as it is obvious that any known mechanism suitable for the purpose may be used.
When one of the cutting edges a of the cutter A has become dull in use, the cutter may be reversed by turning it half around and the cutting edge diagonally opposite brought into action, and, after these two outting edges have become worn, the cutter may 1 be removed entirely. from its support or car- I rier and reversed by placing the opposite face l next to its support or carrier and using in turn the other two cutting edges, making in all, in the case shown, four cutting edges which may be brought into use in turn, although it is obvious that the cutter may embody a less number of cutting edges and guides, for instance the two on one edge face may be omitted.
While the cutting edges are inverted with relation to each other on each face it will be noted that each is an acute edge, the bevels are in opposite directions and the edges are both inclined but are substantially parallel with each other.
Having thus described my invention, wnat I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j 1. A reversible cutter embodying two cutting edges and a guide finger projecting beyond each cutting edge, said cutting edges i and guide fingers being all in a single plane; I substantially as described.
2. A reversible cutter embodying two cutting edges reversely arranged with respect to each other and a guide finger projecting beyond each cutting edge, said cutting edges and guide fingers being all in a single plane.
3. A reversible cutter embodying two acute cutting edges with their bevels in opposite directions and a guide finger projecting beyond each cutting edge, said cutting j edges and guide fingers being all in a single plane. i
4. A reversible cutter embodying two of substantially parallel acute cutting edges with their bevels in opposite directions and a guide finger projecting beyond each cutting edge, said cutting edges and guide fingers being all in a single plane.
5. A reversible cutter embodying two cutting edges arranged in opposite directions and a guide finger projecting beyond each of said edges, said fingers being at opposite ends of the respective edges and said edges and fingers being in a single plane.
6. A reversible cutter embodying two cutting edges arranged in opposite directions, a
guide finger projecting beyond each of said edges and at opposite ends of the respective edges said edges and fingers being in a single plane.
7. A doubly reversible cutter having two cutting edges and guides for the same upon opposite edges, the said cutters with their respective guides being respectively diagonally and alternately disposed upon the cutter, substantially as described.
As a new article of manufacture, a doubly reversible cutter provided with a locating guide-way upon each of two of its opposite faces, substantially as described.
9. As an article of manufacture, a doubly reversible cutter having two of its four edges each provided with two cutting edges and two guides, one of said guides being for each of said cutting edges, said cutting edges and guides being respectively diagonally and alternately disposed whereby said cutting edges and corresponding guides may be ground in single planes without changing the form of the cutting edges, substantially as described.
10. As a new article of manufacture, a trimming cutter provided with four cutting edges disposed respectively diagonally and alternately opposite in pairs whereby the four cutting edges may be sharpened by grinding across two of the faces of the cutter,
each in a single plane, substantially as described.
11. As a new article of manufacture, a doubly reversible cutter, provided with a guideway upon each of two of its opposite faces and also provided with a slot, said guideways and said slot being parallel with each other.
12. A trimming cutter having two cutting edges inverted relatively to each other, each of the said cutting edges having a guide, the cutter being adapted to be ground or lressed in a single plane to include the cut ting edges and guides of both cutters, substantially as described.
