Description
' ntm sam w om MASSACHUSETTS. 4
Letters Patent No. 90,742, (Iated'Jne 1, 1869.'
IMPROVEMENT IN.ATTACHING- PICKS T THEIR HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Ptent and making patt of the same;
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, REUBEN C. GROVER and CHARLES W. RANDALL, both of Newton, in the County of Middlescx, and State of Massachnsetts, have invented an improved method of Attaching Picks to their Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view, representing ourimproved construction and connection of the parts of a.
pick.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the 'contre of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the' line :C a: of v Figures 4, 5, 6, and 7, details in perspective, to be referred to.
The piokaX e of the ordinary construction is objectionable, for the following reasons, viZ, the handle is 'constan'tly becoming loose, and the eye often broken, necessita-ting frequent repairs.
To obviate the above-mentioned difliculties is the object of our invcntion, which consists in an eycless pick, fastened to its handle by a strap secured thereto, and toa socket thereon, by means of' a wcdge, the Socket being provided with projections, which fit into recesses in the side of the pick next .the end of the handle, so that the respective parts are firmly held in place after being once properly secured together, and the danger of being broken, and the 'consequent eX- pense of'repairs incident to the old method of construction, thereby avoided.
To enable others skilled in the artto understand and use our invention, we will proceed to describe'the manner in 'which we have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the pick, formed from a steel bar, and is flat on its sides to within a short distanee of its points.
The upper and lower sides of the pick are slightly planed out, or cut away at a, to allow a str'ap, B, to fit snugly thereon, the lower ends, b, of the strap being each provided with a slot, c. (See fig. 4.)
The inner side of the pick next the .handle C is pro vided with two recesses, (l d, for the reception of two correspondingly-shaped projections, c e, formed on one end of a metalsockct, D', fig. 5, which passes over the cndof the handle O, leaving a space on each side thereof, to allow of the passage of the slotted ends of the strap B.
The handle G is provided with a slot, f, fig.`6, and similar slots, g g, are formed in opposite sides of the socket 1), the several slots c, f, and g g being in line with each other when theparts are fittcd together, so as to admit a wedge, E, 7, which, when driven in, causes the strap to draw the pick firmly against the projections c e of the socket D, which is at the same time, by the action of the wedge, Sccurely hcld in place upon the handle C.
When the pick is to be taken off its handle, to he sharpened, it is' readily donc by knocking out the wedge E.
By means of 'our improved method of construction and connection of the parts, a pick' may bc more quiekly sccnrcd to or removed from its handle, and the liability of slipping and breaking of the eye, and expcnsc of rcpairing the same incident to the old construction, thereby avoide l, while at the same time the cost of manufacture is diminished.
Our invention may also be applied in attaching various other tools to their handlcs, Without'departing from the spirit of our invention.
\Vcare aware of the patent to J. E. Emerson, of Trcnton, New Jersey, dated March 29, 1859, and we hereby disclaim evcrything covered by said patent.
Claim.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An eyeless pick, with rccesses (Z (l, secured to a slot tcd handle, C, by means of a strap, B, wedgc E passing through the handle O and socket 1), with its projections e e,- the whole constructed and Operated substantially as set forth.
` R. O. GROVER.
CHAS. W. RANDALL.
Witnesses: N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
