Description
-1.-w. GOODALE.
Fire Arm.
Patented June 1, 1869.
nmgrvsss-s:
JOHN W. GOODALE, OF AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 90,741, dated J true 1, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT I N FIRE-ARMS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmaking part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, J ons W. GOODALE, of Amherst, Hampshire county, Commonwealth of Mas-' sachusetts, have invented a new and useful improved Fire-Arm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings- I Figure 1 is a side view of a fire-arm having my improvement, and
Figure2 is a detailed view of the same.
This invention consists of a repeating fire-arm, in which thecharges are placed in the samebarrel, one before the other, and fired by means of separate nippies, advanced to suit the charges.
In the drawings, A is the frame of an extension driving-rod, or firing-pin, a, by which the cap on the nippic G may be exploded by the hammer, which has apin, D, extending from its side, which pin strikes upon the end of the firing-pin a, when the same is in position, as shown in fig. 1.
The pin a has 'a head, B,- at the lower end, which rests upon the rubber washer F, around the nipple G, and so keeps the cap upon it, and furthermore,
protects it ii-om wet, in a similar manner as the hammer does upon an ordinary nipple.
Around the/pin a, inside of the barrel of the frame A, is a spring, I), which, resting against the shoulder formed on the pin by the head B, and confinedbetween this and the other end of the barrel, keeps the pin u always down upon the cap, except when removed by the hand. I I g The nipple G is arranged upon a collar, E, which fits around the chamber L, the latter screwing into the side of the barrel at the point where the powder of the forward charge of powder is placed when the piece is double loaded.
The frame A is attached to the sides of the collar E, and thus the whole frame and firing-pin can be swung around out of the way when it is desired to fire off the rear charge by means of the ordinary nipple O.
in order to put the cap'on the nipple G, the frame A, with the firing-pin, is swung over from the barrel,
the frame A being hinged at each side of the collar E by means of the screw-pins f and f.
The advantages of this device are, that all the effect of a double-barrelled rifle or gun ma 1 be obtained from firing-pin, nipple, and frame, pivoted to the side of the barrel of a fire-arm, so that they can be swung 011' from the track of the hammer when it isdesirable to fire the rear charge. 4
, JOHN \V. GOODALE.
