citizen of the vUnited States, residing at Buf-A falo, in ythe county of Erie vand Stateof Kew Ilo parts, on anenlarged scale.
York', have invented a neu' and useful linprovelnent in Machines tor Coating Plates or `btonesI` ot vclnoh the following is a specrh 'cation'.-
rlhis invention relates to coating; machines which are 4employed more particularly for applying sensitizmg 'liquid to metallic photographicprinting plates or to lithographie stones and which are provided ivithmeans forrotating the holder for the plate or stone 1n order toi'distrib'ute the liquid over the plate and remove'the excess oi' liquid therefrom, and with means for inverting the holder for placing the coated surface over a heater in order to dry the saine.
The objecty of this invention is to provide the'inachine Withmeans for enabling the rota-table holder to be'tiltcd or vtipped for distributing the liquid uniformly over the plate, .and to render the machine more convenient and ci'lioient in-use.'`
ln the acctnnpanying drawings, consistiing of four sheets: Figure l is an elevation of this coatingy machine, partly in section,
showing the holder elevated. Fig'. 2 is a. fragnv mentarv sectional eleva-tion, showing the holder lowered upon and secured to the means for rotating the saine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation in line 343, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a to) planl vievv.'v Fig. .5 isv an elevation, partfy in section, showing` the holder and its support inverted. Fg. 6 is sectional elevation of the 'rotary'head and connecting Figs. 7 and S are horizontal sections in lines 7 and SWS, Fig. 6,;respectively- Fig. 9 is a ver tical section in line el-9, Fig. 7. Fig. l() is a longitudinal sectionfthrough the holder in line l-l(}, Fig. kri, on an enlarged scale. Figfll is fragmentary top plan, sl'iowinga lithographie stone secured to the holder. Figfl is a vertical section vin line 12-1'.?,

.Like reference characters referto like parts in the several igures.- f i .i represents thei holder for the plate'or stone and-B the support for the holder which `isilnounted on horizontal pivots so thatl it can be swung with theholder to present the 4her upwardly, as represented 'in ,y or downwardly, as represented latter in Fig. The holder is presented upwardly for applying the coating liquid to the plate or stone and downwardly for drying` lthe saine. i
'lhe holder A comprises a frame of square or other suitable shape, formed of anglebars 2() which are preferably connected by inter mediate channel bars l. i
C represents a niet-allie photographic printing plate Wlnchis secured upon the Liolder A by any suitable means, preferably 4 by Kclamping devices, as shown. '.lhesc devices each comprise on cach of the four sides a clamping' plate 22 which bears upon the adjacent edge portion of the plate C, anda Wedge bar r23 which bears against the under side of the frame bar QOand is longitudinally movable thereon. This wedge bar is olonnected with the clampingl plate by boltsl' which pass through longitudinal slots 25 in theivedgebar and are engaged by inclines 2o' on the under side thereof, big. lO. 'The Wedge bar is moved lengthwise by a hand lever 2T pivoted to the frame of the holder and-connected with the bar by a link 28. y
' ln Figs. ll and 12 a litl'iographic stone l) is secured to the holder by means ofunderlying Wooden strips 3d. to prevent slipping.. channel bars 3l arranged against the under sides of the intermediate frame bars 2l, angle bars 32 applied to opposite edges ofthe stone, and bolts 38 connecting the bars 3l and 32.
The holder is mounted on an upright spindie which has a spherical head 36 entering a spherical socket 3T. in theholder. This spindle arranged in an upright rotary sleeve ortubular shaft 3S journaled in. the support B of the holder and provided at its upper end, above said support, with a head or to. flange 39 ito which the holder can be coup ed so as to rotate with the sleeve. Anti-friction balls 40, Fig.v (i, are preferably interposed between the ends of the sleeve and the support B. l he sleeve is provided at its lower end with a bevel Wheel ell which meshes with a pinion 4:2 on the inner end of a horizontal shaft 48 by which the sleeve can `raised position, shown in Fig. I. .ln this porio sition of tliesp'indle and holder the latter can a spring bolt 6.6 which is arranged'on the ring be ,tipped or tilted in anyv direction on the l spherical head of 'the spindle, as may be nec-l -essary' to properly distribute thecoating liq" uid over ltheplate or stone.-
'lhe support B for Ithe holder is represented. as a bridge tree which'is mounted by horizontal journals' on standards 50 lland exe tendsl over a vat or receptacle 52 which contains 'heating appliances of any suitable kind or drying `the coating'liquid applied to ,the plate or stone. A 'lhe heating appliances shown in the draw-ings are heatedgby gas which isl supplied'by pipes-5d and are mov'- ableso that thycany be placed underneath the holder, a's represented by dotted llines in l1 ig.' 4, or vout of theway' against A the sides!v of the. vat,'as represented by fulljlines.
v 'One 'of the journals ofthe support B' i s preferably-formed by the horizontall shaft 43,-' as shown in rig. .2. A gearwlieel 55 is"4 Isecured to the pivotal po'rtion of, the Asup'poiftV B, between the, 'latter and lthe adjacent standard 51, and this wheel is'engagedby a pinion secured t'o a shaft which jour? 'naled in' the st ndard 5L. lA hand cra ,1 57' 'can 'be applie to this. shaft for turningjthe support onl its journals so as'to presentrthe holder either upwardly or downwardly;
A, spring locking bolt 58 is preferably provided" '1n the.standardl 51 for locking the support andholdeiiin either position, the bolt engag' Aing 1n openings in the side olif-the Wheel 55 for that purpose.
Upon plac'in the'h'and lcr'ank 57 on the' shaft 43, the. s eeve 38 can be rotatedand when the lholder is 'coupled to the sleeve the rotation ofv the'sleeve causes the rotation of the holder, i ,i y
Any suitable devices may be employed for coupling the holder to thesleeve. The couplmg devices which are shown in the drawings,
particularly Figs-6st?, are constructed as -followsz The head or topl flange 39.of .the
sleeve 37 4is provided with bifurcated' or notched coupling'- jaws 6 0 adapted to receive radial couplinf vlucrs 61 formed on the under side of the holderA. Theselugs enter the notches or bifurcations of the jaws whenthe. holder is lowered4 upon the head 39, as repre- Inorder to secure the holder in this position to the head of the sleeve, a horizontal locking ring 6'2 is provided which is capable of circumferential adjustment on the head 39 and which is attached to the: under side of the head by 'screws or bolts 63 secured to the head' and passing through 'segmental slots 64 in the ring. The latter is provided with outwardly projecting locking lugs ,65 which enter recesses. in the inner portions of the-coupling lugs 61. of 'the holder when these-coupling llugs'hayeentered the 'notches or recesses of the coupling jaws-6l), as shown in Figs. 6-9. Th e.. l0 ck ing ring'fis secured in this` position by yrecesses of the coupling lugs 61, and in dotted lines in the position inwhich 'the locking lugs 65 of the ring hare been lmoved out ot'- line with -the coupling lugs 61 of the holder. this position, of'thelring the holder can be raised from the rotary sleeve. to the' position shown in big. 1.
