Specification ofLetters Patent.
Application filed August 18, 1908.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Serial No. 449,016. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH RATTAY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tables and the object thereof is to produce a table which is strong and durable and which is also ca able of ornamentation in different designs 0 parquetry work without interfering with the grain work or construction of the table mem- The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing'forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Figural is a side view of a table involving my invention; Fig. 2 a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 a bottom plan view of the table proper detached from its support or supports; Fig. 4 a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and, Fig. 5 a similar section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a table which comprises a frame a on which is placed a slab or table member I), and said frame is provided with a support which, in the form of construction shown, consists of a central pedestal 0 provided with branch legs 0 The frame a and slab or table member I) are preferably rectangular in form and the side portions of the frame 0 consists of a central board 07', to the inner side of which is secured an inner board a and to the bottoms of the boards a and a which form the body of the sides of the frame a are secured strips 0t forming an outwardly directed bead a between which and the slab or table member I) is placed parquetry work a.
Secured in the inner corners of the frame a are triangular blocks d which give strength to said frame, and secured centrally within and to the opposite sides of the frame a are blocks e which are of less vertical dimensions than the said frame and secured transversely of the bottom of the frame Ct and within the same and to said frame and to the blocks e is a transverse plate f provided with a central rectangular opening f and the pedestal c is provided with a tenon which enters the opening f 2, and the plate f is provided with holes f 3 through which may be passed screws by means of which the plate f may be secured to the, pedestal c. The frame a is also provided within the top thereof with strips 9 which may be secured thereto or therein in any desired manner and the opposite side strips 9 are also secured to the blocks e and d, and the slab or table member I) is secured to the strips 9 by screws 9 or in any desired manner.
The slab or table member I) is of greater transverse dimensions than the frame a, and this forms a projecting rim member 6 around the frame a.
The slab or table member I) is composed of a central board or boards 6 to which is secured a bottom board or boards I) and the central board or boards 6 are of greater transverse dimensions than the bottom board or boards 79*, and secured to the top and bottom of the outer edge portions of the central board or boards 5 are border strips 6 and b which project beyond the edges of the board or boards b and form in the outer side edges of the slab or table member I) a groove 1) in which is placed parquetry work it. i
The top'border strips 12 extend inwardly a predetermined distance, entirely around the top of the slab or table member I) so as to form a space of which the central board or boards b form the bottom, and this space is filled in with parquetry work i, the surface of which is flush with the top of the strips 6 As thus constructed it will be seen that the parquetry work a which forms the outer surface of the frame a and the parquetry work i which forms the main top surface of the slab or table member I) and the parquetry work h around the side edge portions of the slab or table member I) may be made of any desired design, and said parquetry work may be changed at any time wlthout interfering with the frame work, the table or with the main construction of the slab or table member b.
- Although, I have shown my improved table supported by a central pedestal 0 only, it will be apparent that this is not an essential feature of my invention as the framework a may be provided with any number of transverse plates or members f, and three or more legs or supports may be employed, if desired.
The board or boards b and b of the slab or table member I) are placed transversely of each other and this is also true of the boards a and a of the frame a, and this construction renders said slab or table member and said frame strong and durable andprevents the warping thereof.
The separate parts of the frame a, exclusive of the parquetry work a, may be secured in any desired manner as may also the parts b b, b and I) of the slab or table member I) and instead of making the table rectangular in form it may be made of other shapes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A table comprising a frame member and a slab placed thereon and projecting beyond said frame member at all points, the outer surface of said frame member being provided with par uetry work, the outer face of said slab mem er being provided with a groove in which is placed parquetry work, and the top surface of said slab member being provided with a border strip within which is placed parquetry work.
2. A table comprising a frame member and a top slab placed thereon, said frame member comprising inner and outer side strips secured together, a bottom strip secured thereto, parquetry work secured to the outer side strip above said bottom strip, and said frame member being also provided at the top with strips secured therein and to which the top slab is secured, said slab being provided in its outer edges with a groove m which is placed parquetry work, and the top of said slab being provided with a border strip within which is placed parquetry work.
3. A table comprising a frame member and a top slab placed thereon, said frame member comprising inner and outer side stri s secured together, a bottom strip secured t eret o, parquetry work secured to the outer side strip above said bottom strip, and said frame member being also provided at the top with strips secured therein and to which the top slab is secured, said slab being provided in its outer edges with a groove in which is placed parquetry work, and the top of said slab being provided with a border strip with in which is placed parquetry work, said frame being also provided in the corners thereof with reinforcing blocks and centrally of the opposite inner sides thereof with reinforcing blocks to which is secured a transverse member, the bottom surface of which is flush with the bottom of said frame, and a supporting pedestal connected with said transverse member.
4. A table comprising a main open frame, and a slab secured thereon and projecting therebeyond at all points, said frame being provided on the outer surface thereof with parquetry work, and said slab being provided in. the side face or faces thereof with parquetry work, and the top of said slab being also provided with par uetry work.
In testimony that I- c aim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 17th day of August 1908.
