To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTro J. DEOKELMANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Tabs of which the following is a specification con taining a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to an index tab adapted to be positioned on the edge of the leaf of a book, or the like, and which tab is provided with. a reinforcing section which stiffens the body of the tab, and there being a space between the edge of the reinforcing section and the edge of the leaf, which permits the rojecting portion of the tab to bend readily in either direction and lessen the liability of the extending portion of the tab breaking off at the edge of the leaf or card to which it is attached.

A further object of my invention is to pro vide an index tab with a metallic binder on the projecting portion, which binder is provided with rounded corners, thus preventing any injury to the hands of the person handlibng the book or cards provided with the ta s.

My present invention is an improvement on a similar device for which Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me November 7, 1893, No. 508,289.

To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be here inafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tab of my improved construction in position on the edge of the card or book leaf; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view looking against the inside face of the body portion of the tab before the same is folded for use; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the stiffening member which is positioned in the projecting portion of the tab; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the metallic binder which is applied to the edge of the projecting portion of the tab.

In the construction of the device as shown, the main body portion of the tab, which is constructed of leather, or analogous material,

is constructed in a single piece and comprises the rectan ular end sections 1 and the rectangular middfie sections 2, whichlatter are somewhat narrower than the end sections 1; and there being rounded shoulders 3 formed between the sections 1 and 2. Formed in the edges of the sections 2, at the oints where the same meet, are notches 5, which are at the exact longitudinal center of the body portion of the tab; and, when said tab is in use, the two parts of the body portion fold on the line between these notches 5. Located on the inner face of the body portion of the tab is a lining 6, of suitable fabric, which is cemented to the face of the body portion for the purpose of strengthening the same and preventing its being easily broken.

7 designates a stiffening member, constructed of leather, cardboard, or analogous comparatively stiff material, and which member is of the same size and shape of one of the sections 2; and when the body portion of the tab is folded on the line between the notches 5, this stiffening member is fitted between the sections 2. When the body portion of the tab is folded with the stiffening member 7 between the sections 2, a metallic binding frame 8 is applied to the edges of the sections 2, inclosing the stiffening member 7, which binding frame is approximately U- shape in cross section and provided with the rounded corners 9. This binding frame is clamped tightly upon the edges of the sections 2, and thus clamps the reinforcing or stiffening member 7 in position, and thoroughly protects the edges thereof and the edges of the sections 2. The tab is now ready to be applied to the edge of a book leaf or card; and, when positioned thereon,

the sections 1 are cemented to the leaf or card, with the edge of said leaf or card coinciding with the ends of the curved shoulders between the sections 1 and 2," and this arrangement rovides a space between the edge of the eaf or card and the edge of the reinforcing or stiffening member 7; and which space readily permits the projecting portion of the tab to bend freely in either direction while the book or card is in use, and reducing the liability of transversebreakage of the tab between the projecting portion and the portions applied to the leaf or card.

The index letters or numbers are printed Cir ; portion of the sections 2 immediately adja- 1 or applied in any suitable manner to the faces of the sections 2-, in the space inclosed by the binding frame 8 and are, therefore, in a measure protected against wear to which the surfaces of the tab are usually subjected. I claim 7 i The combination with a book leaf, of air index tab applied to the edge of the leaf, which tab comprises a body section, doubled at its center, and a stiffening member inter-' posed between the thicknesses of the pro jecting portion of the tab, there being a free and open space between the edge of the leaf and the edge of the stiffening member;
