Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15,. 1908.
Application filed August 17, L908. Serlal 50. 448,884.
.To whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Janus RAY MILLER, ageitizen of the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the countyof Reno and State bf Kansas, have'inrented certain new and usefulilm rovements in Sheet-Metal Joints of which t e following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawinvention relates to improvements in jgigits for sheet metal constructions of all dsand more particularly to a sealing and reinforcing joint for elerator casings and the like used 1n The objectof the invention is to provide a 'oint'orfastening of this character which will esimple, inexpensive, strong and durable and which will not only effectively seal the united parts but also reinforce them and thereby obviate the necessity of angle metal and other reinforcing .bars.
With the shore and other objects in View,
the invention consists of the? novel features of construction and the combination and arra. ement of parts hereinafter descri d and claimed, and illustrated in'the accompanying drawings; in which-- Figure 1 ma view, partly in elevatifi'i and? two ieces of sheet metal A, ,theformer of whic is bent to formthree sides a, a, a and the latter of which forms the fourth side I) of the casing. The vertic al'edges of the sides a are bent outwardlyin op osite directions at I" lit angles to rovide an es (1 around whic the vertica edges of t e side b are bent, as sho'vvn'at b. The bent edges or flanges b effectively unite the two sheet metal pieces A,'B but in order to reinforce the casin and revent all liabilitr of the sides a, a. om co llaps' the-side b has ofi'set por tions or shoulders formed by bending porti'ons of it at right angles so thatit sets within and between the sides a, a, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
At the upper and lower ends of each of the sides a, a, a", b of each section of the elevator casing are outwardly bent right angular.
flan es (1. These flanges of the superposed or a jacent sections are united by jointfitrips C also constructed of sheet metal and'one of which extends along each side of the joint. Said joint strips are formed by bending'a strip of sheet metal upon itself into Tshape,
as shown in Fig. 3 so that its long arm c may be inserted between the opposing flanges a and the extremities of the two pieces of which 1t 15 formed may be bent in opposite directions at right angles and against the inner faces of the sections A, as shown at c in' The cross arms 0 of the T-shaped' joint stripl are then bent inwardly around and.
Fig. l.
a ainst t e outer faces of theflanges a as is a so shown in said Fig. 4. hen the several arts of the joint are clenched, a very effectwe connection is provided between the two sheet metal parts or sections which it unites and it has been found in practice that the' joint is so rigid that the need of angle metal reinforcing bars is entirely obviated. The
oint may, if desired, be further strengthened y solde its several parts together and by extending ,t e extremities of the portions 1: at one end of each joint strip, bending the same at right angles as shown. at c in F 1g. 2;. and then soldering them to the abutting joint stri Vi hile" the invention is especially well adapted for use in constructin elevator casings or shafts of mills and 'the like, it will be understood that it maybe employed in all sheet metal constructions where an effective sealing and reinforcin joint is required between two sheet metalparts orsections.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1? A joint of the character described comprising two sheet metal sections having right a T-shaped joint strip constructed of a piece of sheet metal bent upon itself, one arm of said T'shaped strip being passed between said flan es and having its projecting extremities bent in o posite directions against said sections and the other or cross arms of angular-1y bent flanges opposed toeach other, an
said T-shaped strip being bent against the flanges of said sections, substantially. as shown and described. "2. A casing or shaft comprising a plurality Q Q vooomst debetmetl'laoetiom; theadiwent sections bent outwardly to form i: and its upper w I flanges and'T shnpe'd joint and lower edges'elsobent outwhrdlyto-ymfile 7 'vide h es,thesheetmetalsectionB oent t asanci (if-the to sithoaee a tionAandhwrlfitheofitsbent tionsbenliaro the vertieal the d 'eplunlityofsections 'at their-ends section mdT-shaped joint n'wuzn 11$ joint stripe between 0 9f the eensaidopyellgoiadposedseetions ,Bandbentsubstm" ya 5 'ha arms and'for the purpose set forth.
