Description

I. KAUFMAN, MARKING TAG.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2, 1908.

1mm DOE 9 3 WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES QFFICE.
IRVING KAUFMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MARKING-TAG.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Tnvixe Kx'urarrlv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking-'lags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in marking tags and more particularly to that class of tags which are designed to be attached to textile fabrics and other similar articles ofmerchandise and to have written on them the numbers, cost and selling prices, and like memorandum relating to the article to which they are attached.
It has also for its obj ectthe production of a tag which may be quickly attached to and easily removed from the fabric without damaging the same, and when attached the at-- taching devices are constructed as to be thoroughly housed, thereby rendering it impossible for the device to scratch or wound the hands in the handling of the fabric.
The tag has for a further object the capa bility of subsequent use, as it can be removed from the fabric without mutilation.
lVith the foregoing objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forn'iing a part of this specification in which similar numerals and letters of reference are used to designate like parts. Figure 1 is an elevation of a marking tag equipped with the improved clasp, applied to a piece of fabric; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device before applying; Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale through the fastening elements; Fig. 1 is an elevation of a blank of the female member, Fig. 5 is an elevation of the male member, both figures being enlarged, and Fig. 6 is an elevation on an enlarged scale of the male member as shown in F 3.
My improved tag is preferably formed of a single strip 12, made of any suitable material, but preferably of paper, creased at its middle to form the flaps 1 and 2 respectively, which vtiaps are of equal length; the equality of the lengths of the respective flaps is not, however, essential to the invention. On the front side of the tag is printed any desired form as indicated at 3, in Fig. 1.
In the free end of the flap 1 is secured the male member 1 of the fastening device,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 2, 1908.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Serial No. 430,495.
I which member consists of a pin pointed 011 one end as indicated at 5, and provided on the opposite end with a head (3; just below the pointed end 5 on the pin is provided a nick or groove 7, the object of which will hereinafter appear.
The pin t is inserted through the free end of the flap 1 and is permanently secured therein by means of the shoulder 8 being swaged thereon after its insertion, thereby securing the material between the head 6 and the said shoulder.
The female member consists of a flat metal strip provided with a central constriction 9 dividing the strip into plates 10 and 11; the plate 10 is provided with a concavity or depression 12; plate 11 is provided with a central opening 13 and with a plurality of slits 1 1, terminating and opening thereinto; 15 is an integral pointed extension on the end of plate 10, the object of which will herein after be explained. The female member of the fastening device is secured 011 the end of flap :2 of the tag A, by bending plate 11 over plate 10, it being creased at the constricted portion 9, the point 15 being bent vertically to the plate 10; the flap 2 is then inserted between the plates 10 and 11, the pointed extension 15 is then inserted through the flap, and is then bent downwardly over and upon plate 11, thereby securing the female member on the flap 2.
My device is operated as follows: The fabric B is inserted between the flaps 1 and 2 of the tag A, the male member 1 secured in flap 1 being oppositely disposed to the opening 13 in the female member on flap 1, pressure is then applied to the male member by reason of which the point 5 is extended through the fabric, thence through the opening 13 of the female member and is housed within the concavity or depression 12 in plate 10 thereof; when the pressure is released the pin 4; is retained within the female member by reason of the opening 13 (which opening is of slightly smaller diameter than that of the pin l) by engaging the pin 1 within the groove 7 thereof, thereby affording sutlicient locking contact as to retain the members together, the resiliency or expansion necessary for this purpose being atforded the opening 13 by the plurality of slits l hopening and terminating thereinto. The resiliency thus afforded is such as to cause the device to be opened without the mutilation of the tag A, and to render it capable of subsequent use, yet the contracting and expansion qualities of the female member are such as to secure the male member into locking contact therewith sufiiciently for the purpose for which intended.
Slight changes might be resorted to, in theform and arrangement of the several parts herein described, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A marking tag of the character described, comprising a strip folded so as to form two flaps, a pointed pi-n constituting a male member, having a groove formed therein below the said point, means for securing the said member in one flap, a female member comprising a strip having a central constricted portion dividing the said stripinto two plates, one of the said plates having a depression formed therein, the said plates being folded, one over the other, means for securing the plates on the remaining flap, means within the other plate for receiving and retaining the said male member thereinto with the pointed end of the said member housed within the said depression in the said first mentioned plate, substantially as described.
2. A marking tag of the character described, comprising a strip folded so as to form two flaps, a pointedpin constituting a male member, having a groove formed therein below the said point, the said pin being inserted through one of the said flapsand swaged therein, a female membercomprising a strip having a central restricted portion dividing the said strip into two plates, one of the said plates having a depression formed within the body portion thereof, and a pointed extension formed integral with the said body portion, the said plates being folded one over the other, with the otherflap end interposed thereinbetween, with the said pointed extension extended through the said flap and transversely bent into engagement with the other plate, means within the said other plate for receiving and retaining the said male member thereinto, with the pointed end of the said member housed within the said'depression in thesaid first mentioned plate, substantially as described.
3. A marking tag of the character described, comprising a strip folded so as to form two flaps, a pointed pin constituting a male member having a groove formed therein below the said point secured in one flap", a female member comprising a strip having a central constricted portion dividing the said strip into two plates, the said plates being folded one over the other, means for securing the plates on the remaining flap, means within one of the said plates for receiving and retaining the said male member thereinto, and means on the other plate for housing the point of the said pin extended therein, substantially as described.
a. A marking tag of the character described, comprising a strip folded upon itself so to form twoflap ends, a. pointed pin provided with a groove formedtherein below the said point, the said pin constituting themale member of the fastening device, means for securing the said pin in one of the said flaps, a female member comprising a strip having a central constriction dividingthe said strip into two plates, the said strip being bent at the point of constriction as to render the said plates oppositely disposed, means provided in one of the said plates for receiving and retaining the said pointed pin therein, means provided in the other plate for housing the said pin point therein, and means for securing the said plates on the free end of the remaining flap, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a; tag-of the character described, comprising a folded strip having two flap ends, and a. fastening device consisting of' a pointed pin having a groove formed therein below the said point and means for securing the said pin in one of the said flaps, a metal strip having a central constriction dividing the said strip into two plates, the said strip being bent at the point of constriction so that the said" plates are oppositely disposed, forming an upper and lowerplate, the said upper plate being providedwith a central opening therein and having a plurality of slits opening and ter- 11] inating thereinto, a pointed extension. provided on the said lower plate, the saidplate having a central depression therein, the said pointed extension being extended through;
the otherflap end and bent upon the said upper plate for the purpose of securing the said plates on the said flap, substantially as described. a
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of'two witnesses.
