FENCE-POST.
Application filed October 14, 1907, Serial No. 397,361. Renewed July 25, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, llnvny l UEHANT, citizen of the United States, residing at (ihicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts. and particularly to improvements in posts made of iron or steel.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for anchoring the post in the ground, said means admitting of withdrawal should it be desired at any time to remove the posts.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the post, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side.
The body of the post consists of an angle bar or shape indicated at 6, which may be made of pressed steel, cast metal or otherwise, and sharpened at the lower end as indicated at 7 so that it may be readily driven into the ground. This post is anchored by means of two curved llukes S which .may be advanced or retracted through holes 9 in the flanges of the post, near the lower end thereof. The flukes are made of metal suliiciently flexible or springy to allow them to be forced or drawn through the holes, and when projected they extend at a right angle to 1 each other and reach a position almost per pcndicular to the post so that they firmly l anchor the same in the ground and prevent it from being withdrawn or loosened except by retracting the, 'l'lukes. One flange of the post is slitted lengthwise as indicated at 11, and this slit receives the fence wires or fabric, which is then held in. place by bands 12 which are clamped tightly around the post, as well as by an angular cap 13 which has a socket of proper shape to receive the top of the post and which may be driven on the post after the fence wires or fabric is in place.

To advance the llukes into the ground the band it) is driven down by any suitable means, such as a hammer and block, which advances the llukes through the holes and into the adjacent ground. To retract the llukes, a hook or similar implement is inserted down opposite the post and engaged under the hand and pulled up. A shoulder 1d limits the upward movement of the band and prevents the llukes being drawn entirely out of the holes 9.

l claim- 1. A fence post comprising an angle bar having holes in the sides near the lower end, a band extending around the bar, and 1novable up and down thereon, and anchor 'llukes connected to the band, and adapted to be advanced or retracted through the holes when. the band is moved down or up.
A fence post comprising an angle bar having holes in the flanges thereof near the lower end, a band shaped to fit closely around the bar and slidable up and down thereon, and flexible llukes connected to the band and extensible through the holes when the band is moved down.
