To all 'whom it may concern: A Be it known that I, JULES DUPRAs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at iVillows, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gates and it has particular reference to that class of gates which are known as sliding gates, and which are supported u on an oscillatory lever or walking beam wiich may be tilted so as to cause the gate to move by gravity to its open or shut position, as the case maybe.
The invention has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of gates; and with these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which Will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited,

In the drawing--Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the main supports or uprights, on the plane indicated by the line 2-2, in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view with parts broken away for the purpose of exposing certain details of construction.
Correspondin parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The gate G, which may be of any suitable construction and which may be manufactured either plain or as ornamental as may be desired of wood, metal or any other suitable material or combination of materials, is provided at the ends thereof with u ward extending arms 5, 5, having termina hangers, 6, which are equi ped with rollers 7 guided upon a track 8, wlhich isv suitably connected with and supported by the lever or walking beam 9, pivotally supported upon a fulcrum Specification of Letters Patent.

pin or bolt 10, between two posts or uprights 11 which are suitably spaced apart to accommodate said lever or walking beam; said posts being erected and firmly secured adjacent to one side of the passage that is to be obstructed by the gate. The gate supporting track 8 is composed ofy two sections 8a, 8b, sagged or inclined in the direction of the posts 11, when the walking beam occupies a horizontal position, and combining to -form an obtuse angle, as will be readily seen.
The walking beam is preferably of approximately triangular shape, the apex of the triangle being presented downwardly, and the track sections being supported approximately parallel to the converging sides of the triangle. Y
End posts 12 and 13 are erected at suitable distances from the center posts 11 the post 12 being located at the opposite side of the passage which is to be obstructed by the gate, and the post 13 an equal distance from the center posts, at the o(pposite side of the latter. The posts 12 an 13 are each provided vvith upward extending brackets 14, 14, and 15, 15, between which the ends of the walking beam are guided. The posts 12 and 13 are adapted to support the terminal ends of the walking beam, and said posts are of such height that the track section Sa or 3b adjacent to a post temporarily supporting one end of the walking beam will be maintained in an approximately horizontal position, while the track section connected with that end of the walking beam which is tem-V porarily elevated or tilted upward, will be downwardly inclined in the direction of the center posts. Each of the posts 12, 13 carries near its upper end a pivoted spring actuated vcatch or latchk 16, khaving a beveled hook-shaped slot 17, adapted to engage a pin or projection 18 near the adjacent end of the lever or Walking beam, for the urpose of securing such end of the walking beam with relation to the post upon the upper end of which it is temporarily supported. The lower extremities of the latch members 16, are bent outward from the posts 12, 13, in the direction of the center posts 11, to form handles 19, between which and the posts the actuatingsprings 2O areinter osed; said handles 19 being disposed in t e paths of the arms 5 of the gate, so that the latch members will be thereby actuated when the gate approaches its shut or open position, as the case may be.
Slidably supported upon the gate post 12, is a rack-bar 21, the upper end of which is suitably connected withone end of the lever or walking beam 9, which latter, by means of said rack bar, may be tilted or rocked upon its fulcrum. A bracket 22, connected with the post 12, supports a toothed wheel 23, meshing with the rack-bar 21 and serving to actuate the latter when said toothed wheel is oscillated by means of a lever or handle 24, with which it is provided. Flexible operating members, such as ropes 25, are connected with the lever or handle 24, and said ropes are to be guided in any suitable well known manner to points where they may be conveniently reached by passengers in vehicles or on horseback; such arrangement of operating ropes is, however, well known in this class of gates, and it has not been deemed necessary to make detailed illustration of the same, especially inasmuch as the arrangement of said ropes and Vtheir guiding means is susceptible of endless modiiications.
Pivotally supported upon one of the center posts 11 is a latch member 27, havin beveled hook- shaped ends 28, 28, adapted for engagement with pins or rojections 29, 29, at either end of the gate fldr the purpose of locking or securing the latter in position when shut or open, as the case may be. Links or rods 30, 30', are connected with theI latch-member 27 near the ends of the latter, said links being guided through loops or staples upon the walkingV beam 9 at the op osite sides of the fulcrum of the latter, and lieing provided with expansion springs 32, 32. It will be readily seen that when the walking beam is tilted, the latch member 27 will be simultaneously tilted and placed in position to engage the pin or projection at one end of the gate as the latter slides or moves to the required position.
The operation of the improved gate will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In Fig. 1 the gate has been shown in its open position, but the walking beam has been tilted preparatory to closing the gate.
By the act of tilting the walking beam, by means of the rack-bar 21 and related mechanism, the hook shaped end 28 of the latch member 27 has been disengaged from the pin 29, and the gate will thus be free to slide to a closed or obstructing position. While the gate is moving to this position, the walking beam is held securely by the latch member 16, at the upper end of the post 12, but when the gate a roaches its closed osition the handle of sai latch member willlbe engaged by one ofthe arms 5, and the end of the walking beam will thus be released from the latch at the up er end of the ost 12, thus enabling said Wa king beam to Ee readily tilted when it shall be desired to open the gate. As the gate moves shut, the pin 29 will be engaged by the hook-shaped catch 28 of the latch member 27, and the gate will thus be held securely locked until the walking beam is tilted preparatory to opening the gate, when the position of the latch member 27 will be reversed, as hereinbefore described. A spring, as shown at 33, may be suitably arranged between the lower ends ofthe posts 11 for the purpose of assisting in supporting the gate and facilitating the operation thereof, the weight of the gate being carried, in part, by said spring.
Having thus described the invention, Wh at is claimed is:
A walking beam, posts supportin said beam, a sliding gate supported by the eam, a latch lever pivoted upon one of the beam supporting posts and having beveled hookshaped terminal ends, spring actuatedlinks connected with the latch lever and guided through staples upon the walking beam at opposite sides of the fulcrum of the latter, an projections upon the ate, adjacent to the ends of the latter and a apted for locking engagement with the ends of the latch lever.
