To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE MONEILL ROSE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improvement in Ticket or Receipt Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved device for cutting and thus dividing receipts, or tickets, given for cash fares paid by passengers on railway trains. A series or pack of tickets or receipts, bearing indicia of different amounts or cash fares, is held in the device and clamped in place by the cutters by which they are divided or severed transversely by the conductors, one portion thus cut off being handed the passenger. The several cutters employed are adjustable longitudinally of the body of the device, so that they may be set in different positions corresponding to the amounts or sums of money in dollars, dimes, or cents for which the receipts are to be given.

The invention is embodied chiefly in the form, arrangement, and adaptation for adjustment of the several coacting cutters, as hereinafter described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, together with a pack or series of tickets or receipts held therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device together with the tickets or receipts. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cutters and also the hinged plate to which they are secured, the same being shown disassociated or separate from each other. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a ticket such as is employed in connection with the device proper.

The body, or back, 1 of the device is rectangular and oblong, and is referably formed of thin sheet metal, which may be cut out or struck up by means of dies, and is rovided at the ends with upturned wings or anges 2 and 2 for holding a pack of tickets or receipts in place. The rear side wings or flanges 2 and 2 are provided with vertical slots 3 to receive the pivots 4 of the plate 5 to which the

The plate 5, together with the several cutters which are attached underneath the same, is adapted to lie upon the tickets or receipts 00, as indicated in the first three figures, but may be raised therefrom and at an angle to the body 1, to enable the receipts to placed in and removed from the holder. The function of the slots 3 is to permit the plate 5 to accommodate itself, and thus lie parallel, to the tickets or receipts, .whether the pack be thick or thin. The plate 5 has three

6, 7, 7 may be adjusted independently of each other and the larger cutter 6; that is to say, they may be slid lengthwise of the body 1 and plate 5. The side edges of the several cutters abut narrow flanges 13, formed on the sides of the hinged plate 5, and thus said flanges serve as guides for the several cutters in their longitudinal adjustment.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the paper tickets or receipts (proper are printed withtransverse lines an numerals from 1 to 9 inclusive, to indicate dollars, dimes, and cents, In order to secure greater space upon a comparatively narrow ticket or receipt, the lines are arranged at an angle of about 45 to each other, the dollars being indicated on the left,

the dimes in the middle, and cents on the right. It will be observed that the angles of the lines to eachother correspond to the angles of the cutting edges of the several cutters.

In the practical use of my improved cutter, it is manipulated as follows: The device should be held in the right-hand with the thumb of that hand on the two right-hand milled or roughened heads which are attached to the

6, and 7", respectively. Then, with the thumb on the left-hand heads slide the left-hand or dollar cutter 7 to the required position. Suppose the amount which the passenger has paid for a ticket is $2.34. The left-hand cutter in that case will be adjusted to the dollar line marked 2. Then, releasing the thumb of the right-hand, and pressing with the left thumb on the dol-' lar cutter 7, which has been adjusted; the central large dime cutter 6 is adjusted until its angular point corresponds with: the: lines indicated by 3 on the tickets :0. The next operation consists in raising the forward free end of the ticket and drawing it quickly and firmly backward, whereby the cutters sever it along the lines indicated by 2', 3', 4. The outer and severed portion of the ticket is given to the passenger and constitutes his receipt for the fare paid.

It is to be understood that I .do not restrict myself to three cutters, although this number may be preferable, but two or. four may be used; also that the zigzag lines may be designated hundreds, tens and units, or for dates.

The use of the device is not to be restricted to railway receipts or tickets, but availed of whenever receipts are to be delivered and stubs retained. The blank end portions of the ticket or receipt, see Fig. 5, are for printed matter indicating the name of the company, and of the railroad line, and any other matter which may be deemed necessary or appropriate.

The device, taken as a whole, is simple, light, cheap, and may be quickly and easily adjusted, and supplies an obvious want.

1. The improved device for the purpose specified, comprising a holder proper for a series of tickets or receipts, and a plate adapted to overlie the receipts, a series of three flat cutters secured adjustably to said late and adapted to be adjusted longitudina 1y of the holder proper, the main cutter having an angular point which is beveled on each side, and the two side cutters having angular points which are beveled 011 the sides adjacent to the point of the main cutter, the several cutters having projections by which they may be conveniently pushed for adjusting them in the required position, substantially as described.

The improved device for the purpose specified, comprising the body or receipt holder proper, a plate ad: ted to overlie the at cutters secured to said plate, and adapted to be adjusted lengthwise of the same and the body of the holder, the main cutter having an angular point which is beveled on each side, and two side cutters having angular points beveled on the inner sides or adjacent to the main cutter, substantially as described.

4. The improved device for the purpose specified, comprising a holder proper having at its rear angles flanges 2*, 2 provided wit 1 vertical slots, the plate 5 having lateral adapted to slide in said slots, and cutters secured to said plate and adapted to lie flat upon the receipt packs or binidles of different thicknesses, as shown and described.
