PAY-ENVELOP.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD O. ALnREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pay-Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved pay envelop and voucher for use especially in connection with the accounting systems of the kind described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me February 28, 1906, Serial No. 303,418.

My improved pay envelop may also probably be employed with other systems, but for convenience I will describe it as it is employed with the systems therein set forth. It affords means by which the earnings of a workman for a given period of time, as for instance, a week, may be successively recorded in his sight, a corresponding or duplicate record being made at the same time upon vouchers or orders for the use of the auditor and cashier. Any number of vouchers having thereon a duplicate record may be employed as desired, but I have shown two, that being a convenient number.

The invention may be embodied in an ordinary envelop into which a proper voucher is slipped and in which it remains during the time that it is in the possession of the workman. It is opened subsequently, the various parts being then separated and sent to the cashier and auditor. Or it may be embodied ina peculiarly cut and shaped blankof paper which may be folded together and two of the edges gummed down. This is afterward opened and the parts separated to form the proper envelop and voucher.

The invention will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof are pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of the specification.

In the drawings,Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop which with the voucher to be contained therein embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is aview of one side of a voucher to be contained in the envelop of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the back side of the voucher shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one side of a combined envelop and voucher embodying my invention, a portion of one section of the voucher being broken away for convenience of representation. Fig. 5 is a view of the other side of the combined envelop and voucher shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a back view of the blank shown in Figs. 4 and 5 when made up to form an envelop. Fig. 7 is a view of the same with the vouchers N and M pulled out. Fig. 8 is a section on line 88 of Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown an envelop A provided with the usual gummed flap B which may be sealed over the envelop when the envelop is used to contain the workmans pay. The frontface of the envelop is divided into uniform money-unit spaces of the kind described in my application Serial No. 303,418, filed February 28, 1906, previously referred to, and the said money unit spaces are provided with hour numerals D and total figures E as there described. At the top of the envelop are spaces for any data which may be required; as for instance, name or number of the workman, the number of the envelop, the week, etc. In practice I find it convenient to have the said money unit spaces begin at the very bottom of the card and extend to the right hand edge, no margin either at the right hand or bottom being left. This arrangement is like my accounting system previously referred to.

Within the envelop is placed the voucher seen in Figs. 2 and 3. This voucher is folded in the middle to form two halves F and G along a knife ruling F which facilitates bending. Each of these halves F and G are provided with money unit spaces arranged as are the money unit spaces of the envelop A and registering therewith when the voucher is inside the envelop, so that a punch will record simultaneously the infor mation on each part. I provide these money unit spaces with total figures but do not provide them with hour numerals as these are unnecessary on the vouchers. As the workman performs his various jobs of work during the week, his pay envelop containing the vouchers is punched, these punch marks recording on the pay envelop the time that the workman has worked and the total amount which he has earned to that point and upon each of the vouchers the amount. which he has earned. The punch mark also makes a simultaneous duplicate record upon the vouchers contained within the envelop. As will be observed froni the drawings, the total figures may be placed in the spaces next adjacent the ones to which they apply so that the punch mark will not obliterate them. At the end of the week, he hands in his envelop. It is then opened-and the two halves F and G are removed and separated. The lower half F and the envelop goes to the auditor, after which the pay envelop goes to the cashier, the cashiers voucher having been retained by the workman as a receipt. The cashier makes up his pay roll for the week from the envelope and puts in each workmans envelop the amount of money called for by the last punch mark on the envelop. On the pay day, the workman signs the receipt which is printed on the back side of the cashiers voucher G, see Fig. 3, which has been retained by the Workman and receives his money in the envelop in exchange for the cashiers voucher G.

Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5 which show a modiiication oi the envelop just described, at H is indicated the body portion to which are attached flaps I, J and K adapted to be folded over to form an envelop. Attached to the body portion 11 are three sections, L, M and N, similar in size and shape to the body portion. The three sections L, M and N are folded together as shown in Fig. 6 and the two side flaps .T and K are glued to the section L. Knife-rulings are provided whereever the blank is to be folded to assist in folding the blank so that there shall be the proper registration between the parts. The iiap I is then tucked in at the end and the combined envelop and voucher is in shape for use by the workman. The exterior face oi the body portion H is divided into uniform money unit spaces and provided with hour numerals and total figures in the same manner as has been previously described.

Upon the same face of section M is printed the auditors voucher exactly like the auditors voucher previously described and upon the section N the cashicrs voucher. On the back side of section N is printed the receipt to be signed by the workman. By printingthe vouchers on the sides as described, it is found that any failure of the various parts to register will be immediately noticed and the blank rejected. The registration of the parts is very important as otherwise the punch marks may fail to make the same record on all the parts.

-When the workman has completed his weeks work, he hands in his pay envelop and it is then opened in the Ofl lCG by pulling out the flap I, after which the end of section N upon which is printed the cashiers voucher and receipt is seized and the two sections M and N drawn out to the position shown in Fig. 7. I find in practice that it is impossible to restore the parts to their original form after the sections M and N have been drawn out of the envelop portion and this prevents the workman tampering with any part while in his possession. The sections N and M are then separated from each other and from the remainder of the device at O and P respectively. This leaves the loodysection H and second section L in the form of an envelop which may be used later as a pay envelop as previously described and an auditors voucher and cashiers voucher which may beput to the required uses as previously explained. The pay envelop, cashiers voucher auditors voucher each have upon them a uniform record of the pay earned by the workman during the time that the envelop has been used. By making the pay envelop and voucher up in this form, I find it possible to make the division marks on the pay envelop, the auditors voucher and cashiers voucher register with each other with absolute accuracy while at the same time the parts perform all the functions of the separate pay envelop and voucher heretofore described and with equal success.

What I claim is:

1. In combination, an envelop provided with spaces of uniform size, furnished with progressive numerals followinc,- a predetermined path and a voucher in the said envelop provided with similar uniform spaces, said spaces being provided with numerals which are rnulitples of the numbers of the spaces counting from the beginning thereof, along a path which registers with the path 01 the spaces on the envelop.

2. In combination, an envelop provided with Spaces of uniform size, furnished with progressive numerals followinn; a predetermined path, and a voucher in the said envelop provided with similar uniform spaces registering with the spaces on the envelop, the said spaces on the voucher being provided with numerals which are multiples of the numbers of the spaces counting from the beginning thereof, along; a path which registers with the path of the spaces on the envelop.

3. In combination, an envelop provided with spaces of uniform size, said spaces beingprovided with numerals which are commonly used to denote the hours of the working day, said numerals following a predetermined path and avoucher in the said envelop provided with similar uniform spaces, said spaces being provided with numerals which are multiples of the numbers of the spaces counting from the beginning thereof, along a path which registers with the path of the spaces on the envelop.

4. In combination, an envelop provided with spaces of uniform size, said spaces beingprovided with the numerals which are commonly used to denote the hours of the said numeral following a predetermined path, a voucher in the said envelop provided with similar uniform spaces, said spaces being provided with numerals which are multiples of the number of the spaces counting from the beginning thereof along a path which registers with the path of the spaces on the envelop and a mark on the said envelop and voucher for simultaneously in dicating thereon a corresponding point on the envelop and voucher therein.

5. The improved envelop and voucher, comprising a blank for the parts of the envelop and vouchers in- -tegral therewith, the whole adapted to be folded with the vouchers within the envelop, both the envelop and the "ouchers being provided with progressively numbered spaces of uniform size which register with each other when the vouchers are within the envelop.

6. The improved envelop and voucher, comprising a blank for the parts of the envelop,. and vouchers integral therewith, the whole adapted to be folded with the vouchers within the envelop, both the envelop and the vouchers being provided with spaces of uniform size which register with each other when the vouchers are within the envelop, the spaces on one being progressively numbered along a predetermined path, while the spaces on the other are providedwith numerals which are multiples of the numbers of the spaces counting from the beginning, along a path which registers with the path of the spaces on the envelop.
