Description

June 18, 1929. o. w. PERIN 1,717,621
' I ACCOUNT BOOK Filed July 27, 192'! Patented June 18, 1929.

I ACCOUNT BOOK] Application filed my 27,
The invention relates to books in the nature of account books, and is particularly directed to books adapted to be used in bookeeping machinery. The books which are adapted for use in systems using machinery, must be absolutely uniform in order to fit in the machines so that the type positions and imprints the proper numerals, dates and legends in the pertinent and appropriate columns, and in correct registry with regard to other data in the book.
In the past, these books have been made by sewing a sheet of paper printed for the desired. purpose such as the keeping of accounts, within a flexible but heavier cover. This practice is unsatisfactory because it is impossible to maintain the proper registry of cover and leaf during the stitching operation. Moreover, the stitching provides a ridge which does not transmit pressure to the type for printing dataalong the seam. In fact, all of the various systems of producing account books Wherein'the account sheet is stitched to the cover is characterized by the fact that accuracy, dimension and uniformity of product are the function of the individual workman rather than the process.
An object of my invention is to provide an account book having no ridge which might inhibit clear printing thereon.
Another object of my invention is to provide an account book adapted to be made of uniform size in large quantities.
Another object of my invention is to provide a process of making account books of uniform size in quantity.
Other objects and certain advantages of the invention will be more fully set forth and described in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view legendary sheet.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a legendary sheet and cover assembled.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a book having a plurality of sheets.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the book disclosed in Figure 3, with one leaf half turned. v
My invention resides in constituting the edge which is the upper edge in relation to the printed matter of the book as a master edge, and performing all printing and constructing operations predetermined distances therefrom so thatithe characteristics of a single 1927. Serial 110,208,731.
of a plurality of books are uniformin relai tion thereto. Therefore, all of the machines used in making my books are provided with an abutment against which the master edge of the printed sheet or booklet is contacted. This process in'relation to the printing machinery provides printed leaves which are absolutely uniform as far as the distance of any given column or line or legend from the top is concerned. After the leaves 1 are I printed they are associated with the covers 2 which are preferably of flexible material heavier than the paper. In order to assemble the books the master edge 8 of the printed sheet and an edge 4 of the cover are both contacted with an abutment and the sheet and the cover adhesively secured together by a stripe of paste or glue 5 disposed a predetermined distance from said abutment along a line parallel to the master edge. Any desirable forms of pasting or gluing machinery can be used for this process.
The leaf and cover so associated with each other are then scored along a line 6 parallel to the master edge and a predetermined distance therefrom. Uniformity hereto issecured by contacting the master edge of the leaf and cover with an abutment and scoring a predetermined distance from the abutment. line be adjacent to one edge of the paste or glue line or stripe which securesthe leaf or sheet and cover together. If more than one sheet is desired in the book, (see Figures 3 and 4) the same can be secured to the preceding sheet as the first sheet and cover were secured together, butit is preferable that the two paste or glue stripes be on opposite sides of the line to, be scored in order that the slight ridge incidental to the stripe of paste or glue be Wide'rather than thick. By providing the alternate, paste or glue stripes on opposite sides of the score out of registry with one another, the book can be developed to considerable thickness without accumulating a ridge prejudicial to accurate registry or clearimpressions of type when used in a bookkeepingmachine. After the pasting operation, the master edge of the sheet and the cover registering there- It is recommended that the scored.
with, are contacted with an abutment and the opposite parallel edge '7 trimmed at a predetermined distance from the abutment, said distance customarily being double the distance of the scored line from the abutment in order that the leaf and cover can be folded upon the scored line anda compact booklet of the workmen is reduced to a minimum, and
formed. After'this, the corners are trimmed if desirable.
These books can be made in very large quantities LIlCl absolute uniformity maintained by this process. The skill required the time of manufacture isalso greatly reduced because the only skill required is successive contacting of master edges with successive abutments; I
Thus I provide in the nature of an account booka system ofmaking uniform account books particula'rlyadapted for use in bookkeeping machinery.
Having describedmyinvention, I desire to be limited only by the ensuing claim:
An account book, comprising, three or more sheets adhesively secured together by stripes of adhesive alternately disposed on opposite sides of a folding line. In Witness whereof, ;I hereunto subscribe my name. 7
