UNITED STATES HENRY G. CORDLEY', OF." GLE'NRIDGE, N'EW JERSEY.
FASTENING AND SEALING DEVICE FOR FAILS.
Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented Dec; 8, 1908.
Application filed. April 8, 1908. Serial No. 425,896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Gr. GoRDLEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenridge, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening andSealing Devices for Pails, of which the following is. a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to devices for fastening the covers of pails, such for instance, as candy pails, securely in place, and for sealing the securing device so that the cover cannot be removed and the pailopenedwithout destroying the seal, and, the object of my invention is to produce a device for the purpose above stated which shall be cheap to manufacture, easy to apply to a pail, and efle-ctive for the purpose for which it is designed. I
I have illustrated my invention in. the drawing submitted herewith in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of. a pail having its cover secured in place by one-forni of my improved fastening and sealing devices, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my deviceas shown in Fig. 1, the pail being indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but in which various minor details of my device are shown as slightly modified in form, and Fig.4 is a perspective view of the form of my device shown in Fig. 3, the pail being indicated by dotted lines as in Fig. 2.
In the drawing, 1 is a pail and 2 is the cover therefor which is to be secured in place by my improved fastening and securing device. 3 is the bail of the pail, and 4 and 5 are ears attached to the pail and engaged by the bail as is the common practice in pails.
My improved fastening and sealing device is made up entirely of wire, and comprises a band portion extending about the pail near its upper end, and loop portions extending across the cover of the pail, the portion extending across the cover being sealed by a suitable lead seal or a seal of frangible material to be broken when the pail is opened.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have illustrated my device as made up of two pieces of wire. In these figures 6 is a piece of wire of a length sufficient to extend around the upper end of the pail and have ends of a length suflicient for the purpose hereinafter set forth. 7 is a second wire forming a loop and secured to thewire 6. by having its. ends. twisted about the same. The ends of the wire or loop 7' are. secured to thewire 6v in positions such that when the device is in place the said ends will be about one-third the circumference of the pail apart, and the length thereof is such that it may extend over and across the cover of the. pail when in place.
and be somewhat slack so that the middle point thereof may be drawn toward the center of the cover when the fastening device is. applied to the pail. This feature of construction, and the approximate length of they wire 7,.will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2.
The wire 7 having first been secured to the wire 6 as" above, the free ends of the wire 6 are passed through the ears 4 and 5' and brought together. and twisted as at 8, at a point approximately opposite the middle'of the loop 7 thereby forming a band about the upper end ofith'ejpailn The freeends 9 and 10 of the wire 6 are now brought'up over the cover of the pail, the. end. 9. passed. about the middle portion of. the loop 7, andtheextremities of the parts 9 and 10 twisted together as at 11, all of which will be understood from the'drawing. After the ends of the wire 6 have been twisted together a seal 12 is applied, so that the said ends cannot be untwisted and the pail opened without. destroying the seal.
Although I have described the wire 6 as passing through the ears 4 and 5 whereby the wire band will be prevented from slipping up toward the top of the pail. this feature is to a certain extent optional and for the purpose of affording greater security. And it is obvious that the wire might pass about the pail below the ears with but little if any prejudice to the security of the fastening means; or might be applied to a bucket not having ears and a bail, in which case care should be taken that the ends of the wire 6 are tightly twisted together at 8, in which case the flaring form of the bucket will ordinarily be sufficient to prevent the wire from slipping up over the top thereof.
My device in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is made from a single piece of wire 13 of proper length. In this form 14 and 15 are two loops formed by doubling and twistapart, and they should be of a length suflicient to extend up over the cover of the pail and partly across the cover thereof, all as will be understood from Figs. 3 and 4 of 5 the drawing. The loops having been formed in the wire 13 as above, the wire is passed around the upper end of the pail and the ends twisted together as at 18. The free end 19 of the wire 13 is now carried across the cover of the pail and passed through the loops 14 and 15, the free end 20 of the wire 13 is brought up over the cover of the pail, and the extremities of the parts 19 and 20 are twisted together as at 21, as will be un- 5 derstood from the drawings. A seal 22 is applied to the twisted ends 21 as in the form of my device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the above description it will be seen that the wire loop 7 in connection with the 20 ends 9 and 10 of the wire 6, or the wire loops 14 and 15 in connection with the ends 19 and 20 of the wire 13, as the case may be, form a wire closure extending across and serving to keep the cover 2 in place, and that the 5 seal 12 or 22 upon the twisted ends of the wires 6 or 13 serves to secure the whole fastening device so that the cover cannot be removed without destroying the seal.
Having thus described my invention and explained the mode of operation thereof, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. The combination with a pail and its cover, of a fastening and sealing device for 5 securing the cover in place comprising a wire extending about the pail adjacent the upper end thereof; a loop secured to said wire and extending up over said cover, the ends of said wire being twisted together at 40 a point remote from said loop and being of a length sufficient to extend beyond the twist and to engage said loop when said ends are brought up over the cover, said ends after engaging said loop being twisted together at their extremities to thereby form in connection with said loop a wire closure extending across the cover of the pail; and a seal upon the twisted extremities of said wire.
2. The combination with a pail and its securing the cover in place comprising a wire extending about the pail ad acent the upper extending up over said cover, the ends of said wire being twisted together at a point remote from said loop; and a wire connection extending from said loop to said wire and being connected therewith at a point remote from said loop to thereby form in connection with said loop a wire closure extending across the cover of the pail.
3. The combination with a pail and its cover, of a fastening and sealing device for securing the cover in place comprising a wire extending about the pail adjacent the upper end thereof; a loop secured to said wire and extending up over said cover, the ends of said wire being twisted together at a point remote from said loop; a wire connection extending from said loop to said wire and being connected therewith at a point remote from said loop to thereby form in connection with said loop a wire closure extending across the cover of the pail; and a seal whereby the said closure is protected.
This specification signed and witnessed this seventeenth day of March A. D. 1908.
