STOVE-GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 3, 1908.

Serial No. 441,853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Grates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable 0t ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stove grates and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein a greater draft area is given to the fire bed than is ordinarily afforded by the grates commonly employed.
It is also an object of the invention to pro vide a novel device of this character wherein the grate is truncated, said grate being employed in conjunction with a perforated holow member for the passage of draft.
It is also an object of the invention to pro vide a novel device of this character which is rotatable and supported within the fire chamber of a stove so that the grate may alternately move in a horizontal plane for depositing ashes within the ash box.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the draft may be effectually controlled by a slide movable across the under surface of the perforated hollow member.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,

In the drawings, 1 denotes the fire cham- These shafts 8 pass through suitable bearings 9 projecting inwardly of the stove to the exterior of the stove and terminating in the cranked portions 10 whereby the gears 7 may be rotated for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to.
Arranged above the flange 5 is a second flange 11 depending from the periphery of a circular plate 12. The free edge of this flange 11 is also provided with teeth 13 which rest upon and mesh with the gears 7 before referred to. The plate 12 is rovided with a central opening 14 and also ias roj ecting upwardly therefrom the truncated ollow perforated member 15, the base of the member 15 bein of greater diameter than the opening 14 and t 1e opening 14 being arranged centrally of the base of the bar 15.
In proximity to the upper end of the truncated bar 15 exteriorly thereof is an annular flange 16 which is engaged by a ring 17 which contacts with the upper surface thereof and depending from the ring 17 are the grate bars 18 which are formed on a downward curve and are secured at their lower ends to a rin 19 which contacts with the outer ed e of the circular plate 12. In order to hold t e grate bars 18 in position, the up per surface of the ring 17 is engaged by a clamping ring 20 embracing the member 15.
It is to be observed that the grate bars 18 are held away from the truncated member 15 and that the fire bed is adapted to contact therewith. This creates a greater area for draft which passes up through the opening 14 within the truncated member 15 and out through the perforations 21 thereof. Thus it is thought to be apparent that by this arrangement a fire of great heat is produced.
In order to control the draft passing through the opening 14 the guide wa 22 is formed on the under surface of the p ate 12 and extends from opposed sides of the 0 ening 14 to the periphery of the said p ate. Within this guide way 22 is movable a slide 23 which is adapted to either close or partially close the opening 14 as maybe required and in order that the slide may be readily manipulated it passes through an opening in the flange 13 of the plate and in order that it may be easily accessible, it is preferably p9 sitioned adjacent the opening 24 of the stove closed by the door 25.
When it is desired to cause the ashes of the fire bed to fall within the ash box 2, it is only necessary that the wheel 7 be rotated alternately, which movement will cause rotation of the plate 12 and the ring 4. This move ment will produce sufiicient agitation of the fire bed as to assure a deposit of the ashes within the ash box.
I claim:
1. In combination with a stove, a plate mounted therein, said plate having an open ing, a hollow perforated member projecting upwardly from the plate around the opening the wall of said member being inwardly bent and having its closed end substantially semit; globular, a flange surrounding the hollow member adjacent its upper end, a ring resting on said flange, grate bars depending from said ring 'on a downward curve "and terminating adjacent the outer edge of the plate.
