UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANDLE FOR WRENCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Application filed August 1, 1907. Serial No. 386,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VINCENT A. CLARKE and JOSEPH SZAFKA, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handles for Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in handles for wrenches and the like, and has for its object lto provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this description which may be quickly and readily attached to a wrench for increasing leverage thereon whereby greater force may be exerted to operate a bolt or nut or other object to which the wrench may be applied.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 is a side view of our improved handle showing a wrench in dotted lines in the position it would assume when the handle is attached thereto. Fig. 2, an edge view of the handle taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, an end view thereof.
In carrying out our invention as here embodied, A represents the handle which may be of any desired length, having the front portion thereof flattened as indicated at B, the forward end being bent into a U-shape to form a housing C.
D is a stud projecting from one side of the flattened portion of the handle and bent in the form of a hook, the object of this hook being to engage and bear against the handle of the wrench shown in dotted lines and designated by E.
F represents a plate spring which is secured to the square stud G and extends forvard into the housing so that when the bandle is attached to the wrench this spring will hold it against accidental displacement, yet permit it to be readily removed when occasion requires.
By this arrangement it is obvious that any amount of leverage may be exerted upon the wrench by the formation of a handle of the desired length made in accordance with our improvement and it is also obvious that such a handle may be readily applied after the wrench has been engaged with the bolt and nut to be turned, thus facilitating these operations.
The wrench or handle will be prevented from slipping sidewise by the housing and the stud D.
Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit of our invention. w
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a bandle for wrenches consisting of a flattened portion having a housing formed upon one end thereof and a handhold extending from the o posite end, a stud adapted to bear against t e wrench, and a plate spring for holding the wrench against accidental displacement within the handle, as specified.
2. The herein described combination of a handle for wrenches consisting of a flattened .portion, a housing formed upon one end thereof, a handhold formed upon the opposite end, a hook-shaped stud projecting from one side of the flattened portion, and a plate spring extending within the housing, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, we have'hereunto aflixed our signatures in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
