Description

APPLICATION FILED 1330.9, 1907.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
i l "TN'LBSES:
ISAIAH W. LIGGETT, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
LABELING DEVICE FOR MAILING ER GASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Ra'tented Bee, ii, 19%
Application filed December-'9, 1907. Serial 33o. acacia.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isamn W. LIGGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labeling Devices for Mailing or Similar Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in labeling devices for mailing or similar cases.
The ObJGClL of my invention is to provlde' .a labeling device which may be readily ap-i plied to or detached from a mailing "or simi- 1 lar case.
Ordinarily the names or characters for designating the pigeon holes of the mailing case are pasted or printed or otherwise permanently mo'unted'on the mailing case. In such devices, the labels sometimes tall oil or become obliterated.
With the use of my invention interchangeable labeling devices may be employed so that the cases may be readily employed for use in sorting mail intended fordiiiereut routes.
Furthermore my invention is particularly adapted for the use of mailing clerks operating on mail cars. In such use the clerk can aiiix the labeling device to the case at the beginning of the run and detach it therefrom at the end of the run, retaining the labeling device in his possession when he completes his run.
The novel features of myinvention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of an ordinary mailing case having secured to it a labeling device of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a corner of'the labeling device.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
1 denotes an ordinary mailing case having a series'of pigeon holes disposed in horizontal and vertical alinement, the pigeon holes being designated by 2.
The labeling device comprises a plurality of horizontal tapes 3 each having inscribed thereon a series of-names or characters 4 for designating the pigeon holes. Trans verse vertical tapes 5 connect the horizontal parallel tapes 3. The tapes 3 and 5 are preferably each longitudinally extensible and contractible, and for this purpose each strip or tape 3 and 5 is provided with an ceiving pins 8 securedto the forward side of the case 1.
In applying the labeling device to a case the pins 8 are inserted in the eyelets 7 with the horizontal tapes 3 disposed parallel with and in front of the horizontal divisions the case 1. The arrangement of the names or characters l on the tapes 3 is such that a name or character will appear above or below each pigeon hole. The elastic, portions '6 are provided so that the tapes will always be stretched, and so that the labeling device may be accommodated tocases which may vary somewhat in dimensions.
Modifications of my invention, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made Without de iarting from its spirit.
Having t we described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent. is
l. A device for labeling the pigeon holes of mailing or similar casescomprising apiurality of parallel tapes each having inscribed thereon a series of names or characters for designating the pigeon holes, transverse tapes connecting said parallel tapes, and
means for detachably securing said tapes to a mailing or similar case.
2.}. device for labeling the pigeon holes of a mailing or similar case comprising a plurality of parallel tapes each having inscribed thereon a series of names or characters for designating the pigeon holes, each tape having a longitudinally elastic portion intermediate its places of support, and
transverse tapes connecting said parallel 4:. A device Ior labeling the pigeon holes of mailing or similar cases comprising again rality of parallel tapes each having inscribed thereon a series of names or characters designating the pigeon holes, and transverse tapesconnecting said parallel tapes, said tapes having adjacent to their ends eyelets adapted to receive supporting devices, said tapes being longitudinally extensible and contractible.
5. A device for labeling pigeon holes of mailing or similar cases comprising a plurality of parallel tapes each having a longitudinally elastic portion and having each a series of names or characters inscribed thereon for designating the pigeon holes, and transverse tapes connecting said parallel tapes and having each a longitudinally elastic portion intermediate its places of support, the parallel and transverse tapes each having eyelets adjacent its ends.
' (3. The emnbination with a mailing or similar case having a series of rows of pigeon holes disposed in vertical and horizontal tllll'ltfil'ltlll with each other, of a plurality of horixonh'il parallel tapes each having inscribed thereon a series of names or characfor des'gnating the pigeon holes a plurality of vertical tapes connecting the horizontal tapes, and means for releasablysecuring said tapes to said case.
7. The combination with a mailing or similar case having a pluralityof pigeon holes disposed in horizontal and vertical rows, of securing devices on said case, a plurality of horizontal tapes .each having inscribed thereon a series of names or characters for designating said pigeon holes, and transverse tapes connecting the horizontal tapes, the transverse and horizontal tapes each having a longitudinally elastic portion intermediate its places of support, some of said tapes having eyelets for receiving said securing devices.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
